Newcomer / Intro How do I...do everything

Sorry folks, brand new player here, and a wee bit cheeky as I have multiple but mercifully simple questions:

1. Where do I get missions from?
2. How do you get assigned to a faction?
2a: Are you assigned roles or are traders/pirates etc just a description of people with certain types of ships and behaviours?
3. Confused by the cockpit scanner, which shapes/colours indicate what?
4. Where is the FAQ thread?:D

Loving the game, watching the tutorial vids but still lacking some key info. Yet to get to grips with power distribution, learning the ropes first.
Thanks for all of your help so far!

Hi blurt,

1. Missions come from the bulletin board in stations when you are docked. Some will be unavailable to you because you don't have the reputation for the faction giving it or because you don't have the cargo space. You can start with simple ones to deliver X to Y, some don't even use cargo space so are good for new pilots with the default Sidey.
2. Faction is based on your reputation, which is quite complex but boils down to doing missions for a faction increases it and doing bad things to them or in their space decreases it. The decrease can be harsh so be careful, for instance killing a ship of a faction can earn you a lot of negative rep even. The only time you actively choose a faction is if you enter a combat hot spot, when you do that you can choose the side you are fighting on by selecting the faction from the last panel on the right hand popup screen. You need to do this so ships of the other faction are shown as hostile and you can then get reward for killing them.
2a. No you effectively decide you role by what you do. Want to be a trader then do delivery missions and once you have scoped out some profitable trades routes run them by buying and selling commodities. Want to be a pirate then get yourself an FSD interdictor and go hunting (this will pretty much guarantee you negative rep)
3. See druids answer, it's better than mine was :p
4. In the sticky section, probably of the Dangerous discussion forum.

thanks guys! Super helpful. Having a complex game where you need to find stuff out and experiment and make mistakes is really a huge part of the draw for me.

^ What Druid & Hap said !

I might just add that this game rewards patience & learning things thoroughly, so take your time & don't try to run before you can walk.
Do a few small courier missions until you get used to the mechanisms, then expand your horizons a little bit at a time - It's not a race. :)
