How do you confirm organics in the codex?

I went to IC 2391 Sector ZE-A d101 C 3 A and mapped the planet. It showed several biological and geological sites. I landed at the first one, and I see all the trees, but I can't seem to target or scan any of them. I got in the SRV turret and tried to use the composition scanner, but you can only target and scan the growths and seed pods. My codex still says that I have 0 of 7 brain tree variants confirmed. How do I confirm these?

Don't target anything with the composition scanner. Literally just point it at the brain tree and hit scan.

Do you also have to make sure you have handed in the exploration data for that system (I can't recall)?

Nope - it's not like exploration - you get paid and get the codex entry straight away. Some are bugged and won't scan.
