How do you enjoy multiplayer?

I played the original Elite decades ago, and I played E. Dangerous last year. Unfortunately, I found it very dull since I never saw any human pilots.

Still, in my news feed, I see awesome tales of Elite. How can I get in on the fun?

Thanks.

Sort of depends what you enjoy doing. There are player groups, some in open, others in private groups. PvP, role players, traders, thargoid fighting, station repair, rescue. Most if not all use discord for voice chat. From there find some players for your play times and have at it.

It's been a while since I've used it. But, I find multi-crew is great for a newby commander to go along on rides to see interesting sights. I still remember multi-crewing with a new commander and docking my T-10. He was like HOLY #^^(&#@! :ROFLMAO:

I highly recommend joining an active squadron with similar interests.

If it wasn't for my squadron, I would given up on ED for another long break, a long time ago.

It also helps to be online at peak time, which I never am, so it's a very quiet galaxy for me. Lol

Multi Crew is garbage.

The only use I have found is for video interviews.

Explo - What’s the point?
Combat - there’s so many ways your guest can stuff it up - you kinda need to know and trust them already.
Mining - really?

Wing?
Oh yeah winging up is awesome. Love it. Join a group. It’s been in game since word for.

Allow me to elaborate on my man comic's excellent post. Yes! Join a pvp oriented squadron. You don't have to join ours, any squadron with pvp interests will be able to help you to find not just other people, but those who will actively (and effectively) try to kill you. You'll need to decide if you want to fight on the side of good (lawful enforcers) or evil (outlaws/grankers). We can help in this regard, we're quite relaxed and we have some good pvp pilots, but there are other squadrons who are more skilled (and usually require more skill and commitment from their members) and others who are more active. I like to think we have a reasonable balance, but we are lawful, so if that isn't your bag, check out some of the outlaw squadrons. :)

Edit: by the way, we also fight the aliens together sometimes. :D

Love it, baset part of the game,
Plus something which doesnt get old.

When you jump in to a system, if there are loads of other CMDRs near the star..... the way the view and how they appear approaching the star is amazing.

20 other CMDRs already there last night, I couldn't stop saying wow.

Agree with recommendations to find yourself a group - just wanted to point you in the direction of the groups section of the forum - you can either start a new 'help me find a group' thread, or there are many existing threads highlighting the options available.

There are so many groups out there, you'll definitely find one that suits whatever kind of play you're looking for.

Can you see who's in a multi-crew ship? Like if you want to interdict a ship that has 2 or more players in it can you see who they are or just the pilot?

I enjoy random encounters the most. Recently I was doing a kill pirate mission for a faction at Sol. Met another player at the nav beacon in the target system, it turned out he was doing the same mission so we winged up and completed the mission together. That's what I like about multiplayer in Elite.

The direct multiplayer I enjoy in ED is with real life friends who I play in a wing with.
Community goals or working as a group in a BGS activity I also enjoy but this is not direct multiplayer.
CQC I enjoy when playing against random folk (I only seem to find free for all games)

It really depends on your tolerance for GIFT-like behavior, what aspects multi-player gaming interest you, how many friends you have online that share your interests, and whether you like the game play in general.

Most games that attempt a PvE/PvP hybrid like Open mode Elite Dangerous I generally find to be... unpleasant at best. PvE/PvP hybrids tends to attract a lot of GIFT-like behavior, from rampant player-killing and ganking, seal-clubbing, the inevitable "trash talk" that seems to accompany online "competitive" environments, and the like. Elite: Dangerous, thanks to the modes being social filters, seems to have greatly reduced the amount of GIFT-like behavior in this game, down to levels that I find tolerable.

YMMV

Find other commanders doing stuff you'd enjoy and want to get involved in.

I've spent the last month driving around Kumay. Admittedly, a lot of the driving has been by myself, but knowing that others are doing the same means you don't feel alone. And I've had several stretches where I've joined other commanders, and that has been great fun.

If you see news stories in your feed that you are interested in, go and check them out.

I like the freedom in starcitizen, it would be cool if we could all jump in the back over cmdrs ships and walk round in ED

Explain "GIFT" please?

ty

edit: ack! Ninja'd by CMDR Esteban

Counsel uses a phrase with which the bench is unfamiliar. ;)

Can you explain/define "GIFT-like"?

I have genuinely never encountered the "GIFT" acronym before. What is it?

Thanks

Comes from the Webcomic Penny Arcade: Greater Internet [censored] Theory

Also abbreviated G.I.F.T.

Regular Person + Anonymity + Audience = Complete and utter jerk

Way too much meta type gameplay in this game for me to enjoy multiplayer in it in general unfortunately. Meeting up for exploration expeditions can sometimes be nice though.

I played in Open exclusively for the first year or so, but the Engineers meta progression showed me the error of my ways.

These days I find Solo and occasionally PGs more immersive, engaging, and compelling in general, playing more as a Commander in the Pilots Federation than chasing the next buff carrot, gold rush, or meta ship build that comes out, etc.

As others have said though: YMMV

Cheers.
