Newcomer / Intro How do you know if combat mission is illegal?

Okay so I'm looking at a mission on the bulletin board, given the fact that it pays out 17k and I'm a noob I probably can't even complete it but I was wondering how do I know if this mission is sanctioned so to speak? The requirements are to kill 4 traders in a one of three different systems. Killing traders doesn't really seem like an honorable thing so I was wondering if doing that type of mission will earn me a bounty on my head? I have no clue how that whole system works, will the mission make it clear that you will get a bounty on you if you take it or do you kind of just have to read between the lines to determine that?

It's not a question of whether it's illegal or not, it's where and who's offering you the mission. You'll see that there are factions listed on the Bulletin Board. Those factions line up with your right UI status - you have to tab through that first page to see the factions in that system. For example, you'll see 80% system control of (made up name) Empire's Paragons and maybe a 4% Jersey Mafia (again, made up name). If Empire's Paragons is giving the mission, you'll gain rep with them and lose rep with Jersey Mafia upon successful completion.

Where you find Jersey Mafia and kill their ships is up to you - if you do it in a controlled system (i.e. Federal, Imperial, Alliance, Independent) and the target is not wanted you'll incur a fine. If the target is wanted, you can see what faction they belong to in the left UI and if it's the Jersey Mafia blast away (or even if not). Tip - if you Kill Warrant scan them before you kill them you collect all the bounties against that NPC/PC.

You can kill anything in Anarchy systems (or systems listed as None)

it's possible to do this without accruing a bounty, but a bit of patience may be needed.

Option 1;
fly around in supercruise, wait for a Unidentified Signal Source (USS) to appear. Lock it, approach and exit supercruise at it (just like you do with aproachin a station)
Observe whats there - sometimes floating cargo (stolen), sometimes pirates, sometimes cops, sometimes traders being alone .. or a mix of these and other things.
Be prepared to jump out at any sign of non-traders. "Haulers" are nice and feasible targets. Cobra / Eagle as targets, maybe not for you.
If Trader in Hauler or a Sidewinder - and he's alone, you can attack. You have to kill him before the cops appear (2-3 mins perhaps, depends on the system).
No witnesses - and you don't get reported.

Option 2;
The mission is in a anarchy system. Good, anarchy systems have no regulation regarding killing except when your inside the No-fire Zones at stations.
You're free to kill anything.

Option 3:
Using interdiction. This requires a bit more planning - and may take damage when you interdict someone. Same rules again, the cops will show up after a short while - you cannot be there anymore when that happens.
