Newcomer / Intro How Do You Play With Friends AND Open play?

So me and a couple of friends have been trying to figure out how you play together, but also play with other people at same time? The only way we have been able to "see" each other is through private group, but yet when we do open play we do not see each other. Is there a specific way to do this or what exactly?

I could be wrong, but a while back (in beta 1.0) they were increasing the number of players that could be in any given instance of an area at a time because we would be right next to each other, and then spontaneously despawn into separate instances. I'm pretty sure that the limit has been hugely increased since then, but it might still be possible that the area you're in is "full". What you could try doing is:

- Ensure that you're both friends in the "Friends and Private Groups" screen.
- Ensure that you're both in the same system (for instance, you're both at Aulin system's Aulin Enterprise starport).
- Both of you, without having another system targeted (by way of the galaxy map or the navigation panel on your left), supercruise.
- Drop your speed as low as it will go while in supercruise, instruct your friend to do the same, and see if you can find each other right there. Pick a target that's 100+ Ls away and head towards it slowly.

If you're not seeing each other there, I'm not sure what the problem is, so it wouldn't hurt to ticket it. I mostly play in a private group though (check out the Groups Discussion forum one level up from this one), so my experience in Open Play is a bit on the low side.

Best of luck!

We've both tried this, and it didn't work. I appreciate the tips though, but are there any other ways people have found a way?

atm there is no reliable way, we have to wait until they release the "wings" update that hopefully will release in a few weeks.
the matchmaker takes your ping into account and if you all don't got the exact same connection it will be very random.
making a home LAN where you all share the same connection can be one way, and i also read that some people have had success using port forwarding or proxys, but its no guarantee.
so until the update the only way to be 100% sure your always together is whit the "private groups"

There is a recent post with a video showing how to meet each other by dropping in on the other persons low power fsd wake. This is about the best approach currently until they introduce wings.

What works for us when we're not seeing each other, after a few tries, is one of us simply saves and exits to main menu then loads back in again. Also just both jumping to another system can work (worked for my friend and I today when we initially weren't seeing each other). I'd try both a few times before you give up.

There was originally intended to be a system called "alliances" (now called "wings") which was to implement real grouping mechanics and would be another layer that could be joined in any of the play modes (well, not in solo, obviously). It has not yet been added to the game but the developers have assured us that they are working on it and something will be added next year.

This is one of the most frequently requested "missing" features of the game.
