How do you stop players from simply blowing up other players for the hell of it?

I play Solo at present but when I have a more capable ship with good fire power and can carry cargo too and can afford to lose I will enter open play with a different mind set meet a few pirates especially the Griefing types which I will make your life hard - and have fun protecting the innocent

Who are you to determine who makes up the "Griefing" type?

I don't particularly care what you do, as FD says that mode-switching is fine. But I couldn't do it, myself. Building up a combat ship in "safe" space in order to kill players in open mode seems incredibly gamey and cheap. At the end of the day, it doesn't really matter whether the player attacking me built up in solo or open, the end result is that I'm in combat in open mode where I decided I was going to play. It just strikes me as something on the dishonorable side and it's not for me.

What I have a hard time believing is that we've had 15 pages of people arguing and name-calling when there are modes to cater for everyone. Decide the level of risk you are prepared to take on and go play the damn game, people.

"What FDs-Vision for the game is"...yeah, so YOU know FDs-Vision, and us evil evil people dont..i reckon that only David Braben knows Frontiers vision, and we are at best guessing. While i agree that higher bounties for player killing and other tweaks are needed, i really, really dont want this game to become all "We HAVE to be friendly". And mind you, im not one of the PVP crowd, my only real PVP experience so far was being brutalized by a Player-Cobra in an Anarchy System. And i was okay with that, even if it was without reason, because it made the game "Real".
But i guess that guy was just an evil evil psychopath, giggling madly and twisting his moustache, because he killed a poor innocent Space Pilot.

FYI, I am a person who likes the PVP so your sarcastic tone and lack of understanding my post leaves you looking silly. I like how it is now and don't want it restricted in any way. What I don't like is forcing more and more players away from open play and not giving people the means to partially avoid the gameplay they don't like (for example safer systems but less profitable). It means less people for me to play with, groups are fine but in a game this big, 2k people isn't that much and will mean less contacts with other players.

Regarding DB/FDs vision, you can at least get an idea of what they are aiming for by watching these magical things called videos and reading these magical extracts on the internet. It has been stated many a time by several devs and Mr Braben himself how they see the games progression and how they want to take it...

Perhaps you should listen to your own advice.

I love player interactions, but stuff like this ruins the game. Griefing people just to ruin peoples day.. The best way if you dont want trouble is the second you see him deploy hardpoint turn around, blast your thrusters and turn flight assist off with a corkscrew pattern. should keep you from getting hit long enough to FSD out of there. And then give me his name so I can find him :)

This is not griefing. The point of this game is danger. It's right in the title, elite DANGEROUS. Not elite space unicorns.

We need lots of players willing to brave the bounty penalty for destroying other player's ships in order for space to feel dangerous. It currently doesn't feel nearly dangerous enough. And not to mention that death is barely a slap on the wrist with automatic and very cheap ship insurance that applies to all your modules too. Man that is casual, nothing elite or dangerous about that. and they're even going to add cargo insurance too. Sigh. I can't believe anyone is moaning about being blown up now when it barely even hurts.

Group up, hire protection etc

And how would that go? Tell random people in the game, asking them to escort him all day long? That's gonna be many hours wasted listening to "no".

Getting shot down by other players is part of the (Open Play) game. What you're suggesting plainly is not.

I could spend a few minutes paraphrasing your sentences and come up with something equally low in value to add to the discussion, but I'm too busy hauling and flying and shooting.

Not paraphrasing your 4 sentences would pretty much have amounted to the same thing. I'm happy to see that you're playing the game, though.

I would totally protect someone if they payed well. Just have them drop 1t of platinum for every jump you have to SC through. Would just need a quick way to join on interdictions on the guy you're protecting.
