how does ED compare to SC ?

It's certainly not going to be like Freelancer. Here is my understanding of the game:

  • Squadron 42: Single combat player campaign
  • Star Citizen Persistent Universe: ~150 Star Systems; in which we can pursue various careers and specializations including; exploration, discovery, fighting, trading, pirating, bounty hunting and mining.
  • Be a crew member (with a job?) onboard another players ship.
  • Hangars which we can 'personalize' (ideal for the type of player that enjoyed player housing in Ultima Online and similar games).
  • Planets: Walking around bars, stores, stations and ports on planets. Interacting with other players.
  • First Person Combat: FPS sections, used for boarding and hijacking other players ships.

I'm sure there is more.

Don't get me wrong, I've plenty of doubts about this game - and I am actually looking forward to Elite far more. But Star Citizen can't be accused of lack of ambition...and it seems it has plenty to offer (though it certainly may not appeal to all people).

Thing is though... You still haven't explained why it's not like freelancer.

From your description... I still see SC as being Freelancer with those features added in. That's great if you enjoyed Freelancer. Not exciting at all if you didn't.

Granted... Elite: Dangerous is still just Elite and Frontier with updated graphics and sound... difference is I enjoyed those games :D

amazing

very, very interesting...

p.s. a tear fell slowly down my cheek

Yeah that was indeed really good. Nice to see the first of the Museum vids start up. Thanks for posting it here. And I don't really see the connection between Freelancer (Which I played thousands of hours. Still play online servers. And the guild I'm in on SC is from my old Freelancer days.) and the new SC. I guess they both are in space and have space ships and stations? I enjoyed playing all the Wing Commander series back then. I enjoyed playing the Elite series back then. I've changed since then and enjoy more of the trader/merc thing now. So SC & ED appeals to me a lot now. ED does have one feature I love. The ignore button. If I find some ass who is beyond annoying and just won't stop. I ignore him. That does not just remove him from chat. It removes him from my game. I don't ever see or hear him again. That is awesome. Does that mean I'm not going to PVP? Oh no. It just means if someone steps over the line.......poof. Gone. Back to having fun. Win-Win. So I may end up playing ED more than SC. Only time will tell how it plays out.

Roberts has likened it several times to Privateer, not Freelancer. I can only hope that that is indeed the truth. I never got into Freelancer, but I dearly loved Privateer.

SQ42 will be very much like Wing commander. The PU of SC will be an hybrid of freelancer (the social content of and politics) and privateer (It's all about you and your ship).

Not sure if that is how it works. At least if he or you have another friend with you, you will see him.
http://forums.frontier.co.uk/showpost.php?p=296183&postcount=52

The way I had it explained to me was this. If he is already there. No putting him on ignore is not going to make him go away. He is already there. BUT if you have encountered him more than once and its a problem for you. THEN you can put him on ignore and you will not see him ever again. I can understand the restriction on that and it makes sense. I have no problem with pirates or pvp. I've done both many, many times. It's fun. I have a SEVERE problem with griefers and ganking asses. Personally if I owned the game, they would be perm banned. I hate them enough if I had the power, they would be banned from the net period. But that's my opinion.

I would like that too, but I too was under the impression that the ignore list will only work IF the instance is full.

The problem is, if it is the way you think it will be, it would be open to abuse. Say I was a Maverick / Iceman hotshot (I wish) and was able to take down your pirating ass every time we met - legitimately - you may want me on your ignore list. IF this mean I would NEVER be put in the same instance as you, it would mean that, for the most part every time there were only 30 out of 32 players in your instance, I would be banned from it. If everyone had such ignore lists with different people in, what would (could) ultimately end up happening is we would ALL be blocked by someone, so the universe suddenly ends up single player.

The snag is, I cant see a solution. Even a voting system is open to abuse, as people are already "guilding up" so all it would take would be an organised group to completely bork the game for someone, who may be playing totally within the rules.

I don't have any magic solutions mate. I wish I did. I know it could be abused but we don't have any better solution so far. I'll try normal open and see how it goes of course because I really want to play the game that way. If they come in this game from other games and bring their griefing and ganking I'll just fire it up in solo online with friends only if I have do. I sure don't want to. I like to do some pirate or merc pvp stuff. I also like to explore and trade too. I guess we'll just have to wait and see how it goes mate. ;)

From that perspective I guess my car is just like my bike, but with two more wheels added on. ;) :D

But seriously, if your not into that type of game - and it's not for you. No problem. :)

Anyone remember the Battlecruiser games by the infamous Derek Smart, especially the "Universal Combat" titles? Their hallmark was that they did attempt to do everything, but weren't good at any individual thing.

With every passing update from SC, I get the same vibe.

Well the dog fighting module will be be out soon enough, it will very likely be pretty impressive. I actually thought the early stream they did looked OK just lacked a little bit of development work, it certainly looked along the right lines. Apparently watching those fancy ships fall apart under fire is extremely satisfying and I certainly can't wait to shoot down some of those high value backer assets :D

I think Frontier might have raised the bar a little bit with the first Alpha showing how polished a combat alpha could be, I wouldn't be that surprised if it hadn't come under Chris Roberts radar in some way and maybe helped him re-evaluate what his player base should have in the first release. But if the DFM is of the quality that its touted to be, I can certainly see Frontier taking a little look at it just to see where the bar is now and I don't think that's a bad thing.

After the DFM though, the games really go in separate directions. I believe Star Citizen will start to be more about the FPS planet side stuff while Elite will be off expanding the universe, space stations, travel and trade.

Chris Roberts is an alpha backer, so you can bet he will have seen it. ;)

On the whole though, and I've said this since both Kickstarters were running at the same time (for a time), a bit of competition is Good. Each product has the capacity to push the other further, and combined with the wildcard that is Limit Theory, the overall winners here are us... the gamers.

I expect there will be an awful lot of fanboyism when both games are released, and unpleasant competition amongst the users, but for me both games are very welcome & expect to enjoy both.

Okay good :)

It really is just people excited about a return of Privateer/Freelancer.

It's mainly to make a lot of people that spent a lot of money on a game feel better about their buying choices! :D

fools...they should wait until the games are finished and reviewed before parting with cash.

<goes off to play some Alpha>

LOL yeah I see what you did there. ;)

I'm lucky enough to be in standard beta here and the alpha/beta in SC. I'm happy enough. Honestly what bothers me more than anything either game does is the bashing, screaming, demanding, etc I've seen on the forums. Not as much here of that. That is more on the SC forums true. But lately it has been rearing its ugly head here. One of the things I've loved about the forums here is they have been nice people not posting like that. It is sad to see it start. But I guess that's the way too many people are now. I wish it wasn't because it makes me sad.

Oh well I'm just waiting for my turn to start up and then I'll get to see just exactly how I am going to play both games. I'm still really looking forward to both. The information and vids I've seen so far are exciting. So for me I'm doing just what I said. Waiting for my turn to play and make up my mind then.

Fly safe and sleep well.

Interestingly, a massive thread / argument / bunfight has been raging in the DDF over the past week or so, as FD have been considering options on hiding whether a ship is piloted by a player or not. Lots of ideas have come forth, some strongly in favour and some strongly against, and no real consensus was reached (for now), but the upshot would be that if a player isn't immediately announced as a player (without some form of mutual consent or scan) then the possibilities for griefers / gankers are reduced.

If you can't immediately tell who the players are on your scanner, you can't make a bee-line for them & harass them.

I'm kind of in your camp - I'm reticent about online play because of the inevitable idiots. But we'll see what happens.

Hmm, thanks for the info! They are considering this seriously? Playing online in a massive multiplayer and then not knowing when you meet another player -.-

I'm starting to get the feeling that multiplayer will be one area where SC will be better than ED. My guess is that the designers at FD haven't played much MMO.

I don't think so, not on a forced basis anyway. There is a poll which favours a supposed compromise - "I want to know if the ship is human if we have both opted in to an IDENT TRANSPONDER service".

Personally I think people are mostly scared of shadows when it comes to griefers and I believe it can be handled far more deftly than simply hiding players from one another! A saying about babies and bathwater comes to mind.

... or maybe they have, and that's why they're seeking to avoid the problems. ;)

Who knows. It's their decision. Personally, I think some of the options of making players the same as NPCs to others has some interesting gameplay & roleplay opportunities, and may well break the MMO mould in a good way. But we'll see. ;)
