How important is CPU for Elite?

Ok test complete. I went into an instance of 10+ CMDRs and didn't see any frame drops. This is AMAZING. I was also streaming and occasionally it dipped below 45, but overall I am extremely please. Haven't even overclocked it yet.

I will continue to test things like stations, etc. and report back. Everything will be copied to the OP

Here is the stream: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=M9mK4WkCXxw

Ok so then your results conlcusion then is that cpu and memory IS important afterall for Elite! Right?

Other benefits. Space Engine planet detail at max and still 300fps. Skyrim with VorpX at full resolution high detail and great frame rate:

Video rendering so much faster so my channel got a boost too. Discovering more every day

Nice... might look into that too, haven't played Skyrim in a while!

Now all it needs is Touch controller support so you can wave a sword about and actually block with a shield.

Come to think of it, a 'knights in armour' duelling app with maces, flails and swords sounds like a good idea...

What motherboard did you pick Dr Kaii? I'm in the middle of speccing a similar rebuild (GTX 1080 and some form of i7).

I'm also debating the merits of a sound card or an external DAC, as I listen on Sennheiser HD 580s which do tend to like a decent amp.

Edit: before anyone asks, I need the i7 horsepower in any case for dev work.

just noticed that my CPU hits 100% when in a station and graphics maxed out to hold 90FPS. An i5 6600K @4.6Ghz + GTX1080. When I turn on ASW it is back at around 50 to 60%

I7 -6700 and it sits around 17-20% using the Vive and running 90FPS most of the time.
with a lot of CMDR's it will spike to 25%.

While it may be a bit expensive for your needs the Asus Xonar essence STX II has a built in headphone amp, I use the STX II 7.1 to feed an AV amp, with AKG K702 cans for gaming when I need to use a microphone, and can highly recommend the sound quality. It is the best PC sound card I have used by a country mile with changeable op amps.

The headphone jack will drive headphones up to 600ohm's so it will have np with your 580's. The older Essence STX is by all accounts exceptional too, and overclockers.co.uk are currently selling them at £124 https://www.overclockers.co.uk/asus-xonar-essence-stx-pci-e-sound-card-sc-005-as.html

EDIT I should point out the headphone jack is the larger 6.3 mm, and not the typical 3.5mm found on some PC sound cards.

Yep - that's because ASW locks the frame rate to 45fps, so your cpu is sitting around idle for longer = lower utilisation.

yes, makes sense. Still I wonder why ED needs 90% of my CPU. Haven't noticed this before. :S

It is actually Elite or the Rift or both? Previoulsy thought that Elite was using lots of CPU because I wasn't doing anything else and my AV wasn't doing a scan or anything. Then one day after changing my overclock to try and stop hitting 100% I decided to scroll down through each task process and the Oculus service was using 60 - 70% and ED 40 - 30%. I still find ED can use more of my i5 CPU than most people claim with an i7 but sometimes the Oculus service uses rather alot too and it is the combination that sometimes CPU bottlenecks my system . Oddly it seems to use more if it is Oculus highlighted yellow in the Task bar and the use drops down if I click it to focus then click back on Elite so I can control my ship again. Tis odd:eek:

looking at the Windows Task Manager it is ED that uses up to 90% of CPU. The other tasks add up to sometimes 100%. Playing 2D with max settings and 2xSS there is no problem. I actually don't notice any of this when playing in terms of lags or anything like that.

Looking at Core Temp 1.6 it shows a load of about 70% of all cores. At the same time Windows Task Manager shows 100%.

Thanks. This all is really very strange. I will start investigating again over the weekend; I'd decided to put it down to the Oculus launcher but I'll try and find a CG or a busy RES and see what happens.

I don't think ED is very cpu-bound. Make sure phyx is bound to your GPU, not your processor.

I will give it a try when i get home on Saturday. I had physx bound to CPU from day one I went VR, as it is suggested in the Sticky VR Compendium thread.

ELITE is hard working on the GPU only because it is working hard even if there is no need to. The GPU is working hard on the whole space station while you won't see anything of it behind the blurryness in the background and the starport menus in front. This burns my GPU all the time when I am docked in the starport looking through the menus. So I most of the time park my ship OUTSIDE the starport to keep my computer cool. Otherwhise it toasts my GPU and the fans spin like crazy for nothing. Well, that's really bad coding. -.-

True, but we are talking CPU not GPU

As I've confirmed in my switch, Elite is very CPU friendly in all situations except in multiplayer situations. It relies heavily on the CPU to handle instances, even small ones. So yeah, unless you are a PvPer or hang out a lot with groups of players, you don't need an incredible CPU.

Also, if you want to record and stream while playing, CPU helps with that.

FYI Elite doesn't use PhysX so no real need to switch it to CPU

I went for this https://www.scan.co.uk/products/gig...-m2-(pcie-sata)-sli-crossfire-killer-lan-usb3

Very happy with it. I have a separate soundcard for DDL as this mobo doesn't have that. Use the on board for my speakers.

Word to the wise, make sure you buy a mobo that has the latest BIOS as 7th gen needs a BIOS update to be compatible with skylake boards. I didn't know that so needed to borrow my friends CPU to boot it up to flash to the latest BIOS. Yes, he was a very good friend and I was VERY lucky
