how many levels/ranks to elite

Nine ranks in each of the areas (also for CQC).

They are in the link I posted.

Be aware, that each rank is basically twice as long to get (in requirements, not necessarily time) than the previous one, and when you complete Deadly in combat and the equivalents in trade and exploration, you are about half way to Elite! In other words, getting the last rank, Elite - is the same amount of experience as getting from Harmless to Deadly (in combat), and the same for the other disciplines.

For exploration and trade, it's mostly tied with the amount of money that you make in transactions. For exploration, that means overall scan data value. Exploration will do best if you can find lots of earth-like worlds and terraforming candidates. Trade will go quickly with high profit sales (including minerals from mining) or by doing a lot of passenger missions, for instance. The faster you earn, the faster you'll rank up.

Combat is a whole separate matter. There's no way to bypass getting lots of kills, ideally at your own combat rank or higher (Thargoids count as "elite"). Most estimates say that it takes about 12k to 14k kills to go from zero to elite, depending on where you fight.

If you go exploring and go just about 10k LY outside the bubble and back, you should just about make elite status. Make sure to really explore though and FSS and scan whole systems.

This is a bit exaggerated, at least at the present time. It may be true if you just fight a random selection of NPCs. NPCs at a rank significantly below your own will not contribute at all so if you are going after rank only, ignore anything below you. I farmed Thargoid scouts for my combat elite. It took me 1636 kills to get from deadly to elite, 938 kills from dangerous to deadly, etc. I doubt I have more than 4k kills in total. Playing a couple of hours per day, this takes a two to four weeks to accomplish.

Emphasis mine. :) Yes, I was speaking of random NPC kills. Thargoids count as elite, as I stated. ;) I probably should have been clearer.

My point was that NPC kills that are too much below your own rank do not count at all. So if you are after rank you should not be killing NPCs randomly but focus on elite and perhaps deadly NPCs ... That will get you to elite in far fewer than 12k kills.

Yes, that's correct. ;)

EDIT: For everyone reading along, the XP value of each kill basically works like this: Each kill of a target at your own rank counts as "1". For every rank above or below you, the value is adjusted by 0.25. For instance, if you are Dangerous and kill either Elites or Thargoids, those kills will count as 1.5. If you're Dangerous and killing an Expert, it will be worth 0.5. And so on. The "12k" figure comes from hanging out in Conflict Zones and killing whatever is present. This number can change wildly depending on what targets you choose elsewhere. I wasn't going to go into that much detail about combat here in the exploration section, but it's still relevant to the original question.

Thx guys for all the help! Any good locations you recommend? I'm new at flighting around. Should I stay in the bubble or outside.

Prior to some of the changes, your best bet was to go to conflict zones, choose a side, and kill everything on the opposing side. You can still do that, but these days the CZs will go through cycles of completion and starting again later, forcing you to find new locations frequently. What will probably be the fastest now, is to go to non-human signal sources of threat 4 or 5, in the Pleiades and Witch Head areas, and kill lots of Thargoid scouts. Unlocking some of the AX and Guardian gear first will help with this since you can get hull reinforcements with corrosive resistance, and to make it easy you can get AX multicannons. Scouts will also take (reduced) damage from standard weapons, so you can load up with regular multicannons in the extra weapon slots. Some friends of mine are doing this with Type 10s, so that they can hang out for a while and take some damage, and cover the thing with weapons.

If you can find AX conflict zones, those are significantly faster than NHSSs as you do not have to travel between signal sources at the same rate and have lots of help and can concentrate on scouts that are already being attacked by several other ships.

It's actually not correct, just for info.

That used to be the case, but it was changed a while back, and even killing skimmers (all of which are harmless) when your own rank is Deadly will add to your combat rank - albeit a very small amount. Any kill, no matter the rank difference adds some combat XP.

Not suggesting that the gist of your post isn't correct, and obviously the higher the rank of the ship you destroy relative to your own the more that will count towards your progress.

OP - The Vulture is a great combat ship, affordable, inexpensive rebuy and has large hardpoints (only two, but still), making it effective even against ships larger than itself. Definitely worth a look.

Good site (https://axi.atlassian.net/wiki/spaces/AKB/pages/296190/How+to+find+Thargoids) with info on hunting Thargoids. I'm using a Krait Mk II (https://s.orbis.zone/6whb) link to my ship build. Ships not totally finished being upgraded cause ran out of materials needed, but it gets the job done as is for me.

Once got the Krait equipped went to Asterope system and looked for Non Human threat 4 signals. Started when I was Dangerous, 30% to Deadly. Took 9 kills for each percent increase. Just made Deadly and now taking 16 kills for each 1 percent increase so 1584 kills to go. Takes more time finding the non-human threat 4 signals (threat 4 has 4 or 7 scoutsonly) then the actual combat, even when 7 scouts show up. I'm usually out of shields and taking some (but not to much) hull damage by time finishing them off when theres 7 scouts. A few times I've had my cockpit busted and had to head back to station for repairs in a hurry.

NOTE: Note on another site I found it says takes 16.3 elite kills to gain 1% when deadly to elite rank. so that would be 1630 kills.
