CQC How many of you use flight-assist-off?

I should also add that I am going to go back to the training missions and try flying completely FA off. It's something that really appeals to me but I know it's going to take a heck of a lot of practice!
It is hard Phillip Coutts. I just Started using the Basic up down left right and slides in CQC. then turn assist on to center. But I do try to keep a bead on a target with it off.

Using Saitek x52 and Saitek st290 pro. I have x 52 pro throttle set blue zone. Use the left hat joystick for thrust forward and revise.

It does if you FA off and boost while only pitching, but then we need to establish what 'turn speed' is referring to, forward motion while turning, or just turning your ships orientation?

I am confused. I also use flight assist off when turning. I feel that while pressing thrusters up while in the blue zone, the ship turns faster when flight assist is off without using boost.

I always use no assist mode. Because it gives a feeling of real flight to me. And whenever I have to turn off assist (as game doesn't remember my choice for some reason, even though we asked devs for a year to add this simple option) it feels like something that was holding my ship just let it free :)

I don't understand why people think it helps you turn faster. It doesn't. Not on it's own anyway. Your turn rate is tied to your absolute ship velocity and how it compares to your ideal speed in relation to your 'blue zone'. Your turn rate is tied to this mechanic, and this alone. FA off has no relation to your turn speed. Thruster control and keeping yourself 'in the blue' is related to this. Sure FA off has it's uses in terms of having your trajectory decoupled from your orientation, but it has no relation to actual turn speed. It's one of the deepest routed falsities spreading around this community.

I'm sorry if i'm repeating myself. But I quoted the wrong person and might not have formulated myself correctly.

When I fly with flight assist off I do it when I try to cut corners and when I try to do a quick 180 turn. I feel that I turn much faster while keeping my speed in the blue zone while using thrusters up in flight assist off rather than flight assist on. I've done some reading on the internet, which seems to confirm this. That is why this post confuses me. Is it just my imagination that I do a faster turn in flight assist off, or is it a fact? Hopefully someone can enlighten me with the facts =)

I have all analog axes on my CH setup, so I rarely use FAoff if ever. I'll never be a top notch pilot anyway, but it's enough for medium ranks in every match.

Rotation speed accumulates with FA Off (up to a point), so... this can be used to your advantage as long as you don't turn/rotate too far beyond each thruster's corresponding vector (vertical up thrust for sake of argument when pitching up)

One can turn quicker with FA Off than FA On because you can apply a smaller amount of thrust (to go with your full pitch) than the FA On computer always applies (the minimum thrust it applies so your turn is a smooth arc but as fast a turn as possible). One can turn quicker with FA Off at any engine pip setting (and its' relative blue zone sweet spot) because you can apply this smaller amount of thrust compared to what the fa On computer has to apply so this arc is smooth/consistent. Using FA Off in this manner you will have a reduced velocity as a result but not too little as to cause a stall.

Ahhh. I must actually have misunderstood this from the start. When i've done 180 turns in the past, I've always given full thrusters up while in the blue zone. If I understand you correctly, this leads to me having the same turn speed as a flight assist on pilot. The way I should be doing it is to thrust up periodically while turning (thus reducing the turn arc).

So, since I've been doing it wrong all this time, it was actually my imagination playing tricks on me. making me beelieve I was actually doing faster turns.

Call me a n00b, but I tried flight assist off once, and I flailed around for all of 10 seconds before I had to turn it back on to avoid hitting something. The end of the video I made below documents my n00bness with FA Off:

FA Off. Not even once.

I never use FA off. Not sure what "huge advantage" you are referring to. Please explain. (And no, it does not let you turn faster)

I love people doing fa off, makes them an easier target as they are almost always moving in some direction in a straight line. I can count on one hand the people that are not horrible using fa off.

The only time I FA off is to maintain a full speed rotation while accelerating beyond the blue zone. I haven't needed it for the faster reverse vector because I prefer projectile weapons, and am usually trying to get closer to the target.

I only very rarely see people use it. Is nobody aware of the huge advantage it gives players?

FA off only flying isnt an advantage in a fight where turning corners is important.

FA off chasing people around corners is important, you just cant use it all the time like some like to do in open space battles.

I just wanted to share a nice revenge frag I had a few minutes ago :D - he almost got away from that asteroid :D :

And here's how I was fragged by same commander (of great skills btw) before in that same match:

Everything is fa-off and thread friendly :)

I rarely use FA OFF and it doesn't particularly hinder me.

It's a situational tool at best. It's far more important to manage 6DOF combat y using lateral thrusters etc.

The extra turn rate can be useful but it's definitely not mandatory

You all who use FA off are superhumans for me.... showing my total respect.

Have tried several times.... i don't know how the heck you do it.

I use it for positioning for both dog fighting and maneuvering around obstacles. Mostly to re engage in a fight though. comes in handy when you can't shake some one off your 6. The whole Boost turn FA off to flip around and full revers thrust FA on trick works wonders.

Putting flight assist back on once you are going backwards seriously reduces your reverse speed. FA off allows you to thrust at maximum speed in any direction/orientation, although aiming is a bit more challenging!
