CQC How many of you use flight-assist-off?

Depends on what I'm doing.

As a K+M player, I use it for positioning and ship rotation or to throw people off, but that's it. When it comes to hugging walls / corners / shooting, FA gets put back on as I need the precision easily rather than holding down F,E, Mouse Aim while trying to change power distributor and counter thrust as using A or D applies max thrust rather than gently like a joystick does.

I either use it to power-slide round coriolis ports or to turn round and fly backwards allowing me to shoot peeps that are behind me

While turning I use it 90% of the time. If I targeting someone I use assist on. I trying to get it where I use Assist off 100% of the time.

I don't understand why people think it helps you turn faster. It doesn't. Not on it's own anyway. Your turn rate is tied to your absolute ship velocity and how it compares to your ideal speed in relation to your 'blue zone'. Your turn rate is tied to this mechanic, and this alone. FA off has no relation to your turn speed. Thruster control and keeping yourself 'in the blue' is related to this. Sure FA off has it's uses in terms of having your trajectory decoupled from your orientation, but it has no relation to actual turn speed. It's one of the deepest routed falsities spreading around this community.

It does if you FA off and boost while only pitching, but then we need to establish what 'turn speed' is referring to, forward motion while turning, or just turning your ships orientation?

I use it when I need it and don't when it isn't worth using. It helps decelerate and you and helps you maneuver faster.

I use a mix of FA on/off (about 50/50 - switching as I go).

Though I'v elost a lot of my FA/off skills, a sI've been exploring for nearly 9 months (no FA off in supercruise anymore), so I find myself over compensating hideously. I need to spend a bit of time flying around a station with FA off int he sidewinder training tutorials to get some feel back.

For the record - it's quite fun to do, you'd be amazed at the systems of trenches and nooks & crannies on the outsid eof a Coriolis station if you look...

Z...

I use it for positioning for both dog fighting and maneuvering around obstacles. Mostly to re engage in a fight though. comes in handy when you can't shake some one off your 6. The whole Boost turn FA off to flip around and full revers thrust FA on trick works wonders.

I'm still not convinced that FAOFF can give you a significant advantage, aside from the fact that you can thrust in any direction to full speed. I've gotta re-watch Yodaphone's FAOFF tutorials I guess. :D

Yeah I also pilot with no flight assistance, exclusively/all the time, I don't use flight assist.. ever! Much prefer the mechanics of freefall and countering every input. So much more like fun.

edit: link is a CQC top ten tips guide I made a couple of weeks back if you're interested
I think I had a few attack from you a few times. I did use rapid cannons But otherwise the ship setup the same. So I can put all pips in Engines and Shields.

I use it in most combat situations.flip it off for 2 seconds at most while reorienting the ship for attack, then back on,set throttle or boost and attack again.
Use it all the time in CQC and often in main game when you fly larger ships vs smaller fighters,eg fighting in anaconda or python

Cool, what's your handle/callsign? Don't recognise Lestat if it's that, but I've met so many a cmdr, apologies :)

edit: my bad, there it is as your sig. CMDR Vercingertorix, yes.. sounds familiar. Hope to see you again :)

I do use it but to be honest the condor is so maneuverable that I'm not convinced it gives a massive edge

I'm inclined to agree that it basically comes down to personal preference, however I could be so bold to suggest to get the most out of fa On one really needs analogue controls for all axes of translation (vertical/lateral), most hotas setups don't have an analogue hat/pov to use for this. With fa off analogue controls aren't as crucial because the thruster counters needed/required are predominantly full thruster inputs anyway (that you can of course get from digital). I much prefer a gamepad in my left hand for all ship thrust due to its' analogue characteristics, perhaps a further advantage [?]

Question I have do you use keyboard or joysticks. My setup dual Flight stick so it make assist off a little tricky.

LOL answered my question already.

I should also add that I am going to go back to the training missions and try flying completely FA off. It's something that really appeals to me but I know it's going to take a heck of a lot of practice!

Haha, beat you by a minute. Dual joysticks is ideal really, similar in a way to my own setup (I'm just using a tiny joystick on a gamepad as you've just read)
