How many people playing the multiplayer alpha?

Just wondering how many people are playing the multiplayer alpha. I know its alpha, and the game is probably pretty bare bones, but from what iv seen on youtube it looks amazing for an alpha.

My question is, is there a decent playerbase actively playing the alpha, or is everyone eagerly waiting for the next release? Hows the re playability? Im on the fence on alpha backing. Thanks for your input

Perhaps you should have a yes or no poll for this!?
Don't forget to adjust based on the estimated percentage who do not read or participate on the forums or polls. :D

I'm not playing the alphas since I am patiently waiting for the release of the beta but anyone that paid £200 will currently be playing the alpha and there are quite a few of those. Unfortunately alpha 3 had quite a few issues with people being unable to connect. Thankfully this was resolved for the most part with the latest update although the space station still randomly appears and disappears I believe.

There are roughly 2000 alpha testers.

95% of them have logged in through the launcher client and played one of the alphas at some time or another.

10% have an oculus rift.

That's all I've heard from FD on any stats front.

I looked on kickstarter page of Elite Dangerous. From Pledge 200Ł up to Pledge 5000Ł is 1380 people. Theory probably they have access to Alpha.

I do not know whether the person from Pledge 150Ł have access to Alpha - there are 1167 people.

Surely if you were going to back the time for it has passed - unless you simply want to support the devs.
With a bit of luck alpha 4 will be out in a week or so, and then it will be the beta countdown. Its your money and all. Do what you will but that 100 quid saving is a nice chunk of change off an x52 or A rift dk2 :)

I know FD are fast, but I don't think a week is enough time for them to fix the network bugs, release 3.03, and then implement all the new features to release 4.0. I'd love to be proven wrong on that, but my guess is next week will be 3.03 at most.

Sorry I should have worded my original post better. Im more interested in whether there is an active amount of testers playing the multiplayer right now, or if the servers are largely deserted as people are waiting for the next release. Iv backed a number of alpha games on steam, and there is virtually no one logged in on them. Is it the same here?

I am going to back the game at some point, just not sure whether itll be alpha or beta. Also does anyone know if the premium beta price will go up once alpha is complete?

Thanks

I maybe play online for about an hour every day. After a long day of work, sometimes I just want to sit back, relax, and obliterate some pirates. But, while there is a lot in the Alpha currently, there's only so much I can play before it gets a little boring and repetitive for one session. Also, some of that time is spent messing with my controls and ship fittings, trying to find the best setup.

If you decide to become an alpha backer right now, you're not getting 200 pounds worth of game. And that's what this really is, you're backing the game development with 200 pounds, even if the kickstarter is long since over.

Also, the Alpha is buggy. It crashes often. Stations sometimes vanish. You make money and might lose your shiny new ship to a glitch moments after you fly out of the dealer hangar. It's an incomplete experience and big chunks are still missing, to be added in Alpha 4 and the Beta phase.

If you're ok with all this, and you understand that you're supporting Frontier Developments with money and in return you get to play before everyone else, then YES you should totally join up. It's amazing, even though it's incomplete still. It feels like no other space game really, in a good way.

thanks for the honest replies. Yeah im in a number of alpha/betas atm so I do know what to expect. Even backed a few games released in alpha.. cough x rebirth. Im going to back the premium beta and save a little bit of cash. Thank you everyone for the input.

There is also the backers of the old store and the new store (in addition to the kickstarter). The backers who have pledged 150, does not have access to the alpha

Even though the game is barely heard of,
its at least £200 to get into what is just an alpha,

I'm surprised its as little as 2,000 users.

Saying that though, I'm happy enough to wait for the beta, so alot will be like me, but still, only 2,000?

You would think there would be more than that.

Is the alpha available worldwide and Was the original elite big in america, I dont think many of the americans I know have heard of it, or maybe people were too young :)

When the time comes, there will certainly be a great advertising campaign at planetary level, to capture tens of thousands of players. Frontier does not aim the instantaneity for the sales. But the progressivity on the years

It really needs to be millions to be a success. I think the game will eventually advertise itself. It will be like an avalanche when it gets going. Word of mouth and all that.

Gamers have been starved of a proper game for years, some newer PC owners have probably never experienced a proper PC game that EA or whoever hasnt butchered :)

Alot of people buy games just for the name, thats why COD sells millions before it even releases and elite hasnt really got a name yet, but once news gets out it cant really fail to be a huge hit.

Frontier has already sold a game to ten million copies. FE2 in the 90s was sold to 1 million copies in Europe

Frontier Developments adopted a strategy of opening the design and testing of the game to backers, but intentionally limited the number of slots. It makes sense as there is no point having a million testers at this stage, generating tens of millions of fault reports most of which would be duplicates. They would never have the time to look at 90% of them. As it is the the devs are very responsive and post individual replies to our fault tickets and follow through until things are resolved. That sort of relationship would be impossible if there was a massive number of alpha testers.

Whenever I play there are usually some other players around. But I mostly play during the week and I'm in Asia so I don't see the heavy loading periods normally.

Given the nature of elite, seeing a lot of players might not be in keeping with the game concept - I don't view it as a large scale combat simulator, more like many small engagements and generally that's possible in the current alpha.

£200 is a lot though. However with early access, the release game and "major expansions" included in the price, you could argue that £200 is quite good value assuming expansions are big/expensive and there's 3 or more of them.

However, the alpha in its current state is very limited, it does crash a lot (which has reduced the number of players because of frustration), there's no anti griefing protection or "etiquette control", and what content there is is largely combat focused.

So with all that in mind, jump in the alpha if it sounds worthwhile to you.

Toad.
