Hi Gang,

Just wanted to know how big our sub-community is. Players like us are clearly like minded and it would be nice to have a social group to help players get a better understand of the games in game tool set.

Check In!

What I would like to do with is post is to create space where we can share our techniques and how we leverage the in-game tools to help use navigate and find things that need to be found in game.

  • Trade Routes
  • Tactics
  • Techniques

Generally I don't use 3rd part stuff, the exception is EDSY to plan ship builds and engineering.
I started off as a wandering trader and used the info on the right of the commodities screen or galmap set to show economy and population size to identify where to go. That's less useful with colonisation now as player systems can have large populations without a functional economy.

I am a wonder as well. I have also noticed that that about the economies... even my own outpost and colony are very dysfunctional economy wise. I hope to correct that after I earn enough to get a carrier. Maybe with that I can get things going.

You sound like me... I will never use 3rd party tools. It seems like cheating to me. I feel the tools allow you to speed play the game. That to me seems like a recipe for boredom with a game like this.

The use of websites is a violation of the no-3rd-party-tools-code! You have been warned...

I've messed with EDHM. I use Inara but feel appropriately guilty about it, I've plotted FC and neutron routes with Spansh, and I have a couple of self-penned perl scripts which use data from my own journal files. One to report on my doings so I can see more easily where I've been and what I did there, and one to randomly pick the next unvisited system from a boxel and put its name in the cut buffer.

I feel that spiritually I belong in the no-3rd-party camp, but now I see the full list of my transgressions I wonder if it's too much to be posting here?

I think perhaps it is. Mea Culpa! :-/

ETA: Also forgot to mention EDSY. That one would be particularly hard to give up!

Nope. Consequent.

Everytime you use f.e. Spansh, Inara, EDSM to look something up, you are using 3rd party tools. Not directly, but indirect.
You are missing the point... this post is about NOT using 3rd party tools to help with the game...
I am sure that is clear.

So again I think you are mis-reading the post. LOL

Third party tools use the information that is already there and makes it easier to understand .
So it's not cheating it's just using the information Fdev has supplied but couldn't be bothered to implement in game. As for exploration see the info on the forums Marx's how to find ELW or any other worlds .
So because you don't use it doesn't mean it's cheating it just means you do t use the information in game properly .
But hey fly safe commander and if you come across any of my earlier discoveries you may see only ELW or WW because we didn't have the easier stuff that is around nowadays .

I prefer to even underline this - it's the most selfish way of using 3rd party tools - using the crowd-driven result of other commanders that do use 3rd party tools to provide that said result one get get from websites like Spansh, Inara and others.

I think it's a fair question whether you intend to include websites like Inara and EDSY as 3rd party tools or not? A lot of folks might take "3rd party apps" to be just things like SRV Survey and ED Copilot which run in real time alongside the game, provide overlays, and so on.

It would be helpful to lay out exactly what counts as a 3rd party tool for purposes of the thread, I think is the point.

My Techniques
What I like to do is pick a direction of travel.
When I visit a system I try to land at the Ring or Coriolis and grab the market data.
This allows me to use the compare filters as well as get the trade routes to light up.
Move my Scout Fleet

Bookmarks And Bookmark Notes
Are key, Adding notes to the bookmarks via the galaxy map has become
so helpful. It is like having an onboard database.

Ferrying Support Ships (via InterAstra Or Redeployment (bought hulls) )
The right support ships as a mobile Anchor points. (for us with no carrier) is essential.
That secondary ship that can land on med is a must , if you are using a ship with a large pad
requirement. It allows you to scout more.

Lilly Padding
Moving Ships as a fleet that follows me around to give me mission flexibility. I Pay InterAstra
to fly ships to ports to allow me to conduct different missions while I travel setting up my on in game
trading and exploration routes
  1. Prime Ship is the Cassy (Explore Scout)
  2. Secondary is the Mandy (Scout)
  3. Third The Kitty Clippers (Money Maker if I find Good Trading Deals)
This is my ship in my Lilly Pad Fleet

Trading:
What I have found that doing this and using the bookmarks and making noted in the book marks.
I am able to create my own trade routes. Some of my routes have allowed me to make
good profits form moving commodities.

Exploration:
Using a similar technique that I term Lily padding... I am sure that I visit the large padded
stations as well as ground settlements, to see what services they offer. I also make notes
in the bookmarks if they have something important like Tech brokers, that lab that takes
your bio stuff and stations that have the option to sell your discoveries and findings.

No Need For 3rd Party, Much More Rewarding
These helps build that network or web that allows you to crawl around while exploring. This has been
a very fun way to play, As you collect things such as information. You are able to turn it in. I find the galaxy
map filters very valuable in this effort.

I have not mastered the in game tools, but I am finding out that a lot of good information can be found with in the game.
Eliminating the any reason to seek information outside of the game. As a personal opinion I truly find using the in
game resources far more rewarding then using outside tools.

I would love to hear the techniques from other like minded people.
