You can do both. I too turn on my VR and am in spaceship immersion heaven, and don't care what I do as long as I can fly. But I also want to fly as good a ship as I can if possible. There's a time for both. Dogmatically limiting you to one or the other may possibly be counter productive.

My question to you OP is how is using this forum, considered allowable with your no 3rd party apps or tools approach? Fdev most likely did not write this forum program, they bought it from some company and changed the look and feel of it to fit their needs.
The forum is not in game. It is not using the Elite game .exe file. It is yet another web site, where tons of 3rd party website data and tricks are discussed. So the forum does all the research and data finding for you and you use that info in game?
But as long as it works for you and your having fun, it's all good.

I do use 3rd party apps because they do exactly what I could do myself with a spreadsheet (and I definitely would because I am that kinda guy), they just do it more efficiently. Anyway, this was supposedly a thread for people who don't use them to talk among themselves. Fine, no problem, I'm not the kinda guy to tell people that they're "playing the game wrong."
So far so good, and I just moved on to something else.
But then you, unequivocally, came out and said that using a 3rd party app was "cheating, no doubt about it."
That's your opinion, and you're entitled to it. But what it also is, at least to most people, is an insult.
Don't insult people and then act all surprised and victimized when the people you just insulted decide to respond.

If you are offended then you too must feel like you are cheating the game loops.
The tools that allow you to bypass searching for stuff which is a core element in this game. Is sorta of cheating.
If it is not cheating then what is it?
Since you came into a topic that said nothing about cheating, I assume that some part of you must agree that it is cheating.
So this is why you are here to belabor the point. You don't have to defend your use of 3rd party tools . It's your play style.

But since you want to chat about we can.... So I will ask...
- How would you characterize being able to bypassing looking resources in the game?
- How would you characterize being able to bypass comparing commodity markets of places you have not visited yet?
- How would you characterize being able tell a player what the highest valued commodity without having the game loaded
- How would you characterize being able tell a player where to find contacts if you have never visited the location where these contacts are?
- How would you characterize being able tell a player where to find a station that has a ship you want to buy despite never have been there in game?
It is a simple test. Without loading the game, You can load up a 3rd party tool and find out what is the highest trading commodity in the game right this second
in a API based 3rd party tool. That is like God's Eye over the game.
You can, at a glance without loading the game, tell someone where to find any module I may need.
You can tell someone what station to find it at. Even if you have never visited that station yourself.
You can do all of this without even having the game loaded... all you need is a 3rd party aggregation
tool that pulls data via the API.
Players that don't use 3rd party tools, they can't do that even with the game loaded without doing
some major foot work. Having a God's Eye tool is kinda like cheating the main search game loop.
IF you can find out information about resource, locations and commodities without loading the game.
what ever having visited a port or station, that cheating.
No other way to look at it if you asked my opinion, which someone did, and I answered what I felt.

Why would the developers intentionally allow cheats? The information used by these tools is deliberately exported by the game into a format where it can be picked up by these tools.

First pinned post contains a Frontier manual on why the API exists and how to use it - specifically to create these tools.

The game doesn't provide enough bookmarks so 3rd party tools to handle bookmarks.
The game has horrible route plotting 3rd party tools for long routes.
The game has a horrible trade and fitting search so 3rd party tools.
The game has a horrible FSS UI so 3rd party tools to display that info.
The game has a horrible colonisation UI again 3rd party tools.
The game doesn't provide audio processing tools for it's own audio puzzles so 3rd party tools.
They have released an API and documentation for it so clearly the tools are expected. I use tools for a lot of things because the in game UI degrades my gameplay experience and makes the whole flow frustrating and time consuming without delivering value.
