Horizons How said that the surface is to bright!!! (just some pictures of dark surface)

Relax I know that the ambient light is to bright on the far side;), but if you want darkness go to the dark side (no pun intended) of the terminator line...

To dark to drive?...

I wish I could remember where I landed, I think it was a body that Granite had mentioned in a video. The valley I went into on the dark side was so deep and so full of mist it was like trying to land in the movie Aliens. It was the most atmospheric moment I've had in Horizons so far. It was so dark and misty I was landing completely by instruments. It was great!

Yeah, just back from a mission to Dongkum A 1 and was surprised to see a completely dark surface given many complained the "dark side" wasn't dark enough.

Summoning the ship back down into the darkness and into the Scarab's headlights was very cool.

I'm not seeing the ambient light too much either. Every planet I've landed on the night side has been pitch black. It's really eerie.

I think that was Ariel, one of the moons of Neptune.

In my game it sure isn't dark on the night side of the planets. Have never tried landing on the terminator line though. I do wish they integrate an option to shut down that ambient light for those that so wish, as it's a bit of an immersion killer for me.

For those that say that it's dark generally now, is that a graphics option tweaked to a certain setting you use to get that, or are you guys talking only from those special places?

I get true darkness even with my default settings. Are you sure you don't have your SRV lights set to high beam?

I think last time I landed on the dark side of a planet was two days ago, and the whole dark side seemed to lit up as soon as I went over the horizon. It sure is dark while approaching it at first, but someone turns on the god lights soon after. I can see everything from kilometers high, and I can turn my SRV lights off on the surface and still see rocks hundred of meters away and distinguish their textures.

So unless they sneaked a server update in these two last days, then I still have brutal ambient light on the dark side. I will try it again today, not that it really changed these days and I didn't notice!

Only setting I have fiddled with is my Gamma. It's set all the way to the left. Everything else is default Ultra.

I played it two nights ago, was on the dark side of Lucifer, & couldn't see more than 500m in front of my SRV-even with my beams on!

If you use a HDMI monitor/TV then nVidia drivers default to limited RGB output - this means *NOT* dark planets. This is a known problem with HDMI connection. When I finally fixed this, Elite Dangerous (Horizons) looks MUCH better, the sky/universe is BLACK, and the dark side of planets are pitch black (good movie by the way).

Check under nVidia display settings for you monitor and ensure the the RGB range is set to full. For me the 359.xx drivers refuse to set full RGB, so I have to use 358.xx drivers. To be honest, I have played with limited RGB colors for a long long time.

Awesome hint. I didnt like the bright dark sides... Have to check this immediately when i get home. Have some rep for pointing me there.

Thanks for that hint. Checked right away, but I'm using DisplayPort and RGB is already at full. But knowing that for others it's pitch black, I'm going to play around with my settings to see if I find a solution.

Has anyone noticed or considered reflected light from moons or planets, or light from other nearby stars?
I don't think that different light sources have been implemented yet, although it would be awesome.

On a side note, last time I landed in Mitterand Hollow I did notice it became pitch black only during the eclipses. If I flew out to the dark side of the moon, I'd have a full bright night though...

Thanks Thacyoon, this did the trick for me using a Sony Bravia HD LCD over HDMI, I also set output colour format to YCbCr444. Ambient light now perfect, before I could drive around with any lights and still see for miles.

I still see for miles in your screenshot... I have similar visuals as you here, but I can't get that pitch black from the OP pictures. I'm going to try changing the color format though, as I haven't tried that yet.

That doesn't help AMD GPU users like me :)
