Newcomer / Intro How the hell do i get away from starting point??

Ok so this was my plan... start the game take some time trading and making enough CR to make my way around the galaxy(however slowly) gaining experience and improving ship/skills as i go.

So far i can only seem to move a few systems from my starting point in any direction before coming to a dead end and i have not found one item at any station that looks like i could make any money on.

Is that because the trading system is messed up or am i completely missing something?

I have done some searches but everything i seem to read is pre 16/12 release so i'm not sure how relevant they are as things may well have changed since.

Thanks!

When gamma hit I spent the first few days testing where I start by clearing my saves.

I can confirm that in some starting zones I was bubbled in a system of half a dozen jumps and couldn't break it.

You have two choices.

1. Clear save and start somewhere more favourable.
2. Buy a bigger FSD (Frame Shift Drive) as soon as you can to break free from the bubble.

I had exactly the same issue yesterday, however it was the setting i had on the galactic map.
If you set your cargo volume to 0 T then the jump distances are improved and you can escape from the seeming dead-end.
Then you just need to earn a few credits and update your ship to improve the jump range

Pick up missions from the bulletin boards or see if you can shoot some wanted AI pilots for bounties. Markets also shouldn't be totally flat, just make sure you check the imports and exports. You see those when selecting a trade good in the commodities screen in the little info pane on the right. Buy stuff that's in good supply and well below galactic average and ferry it to an export destination, and you should be able to make some profit.

Even if you start on an "island" you will be able to leave soon enough, but it requires increasing your jump range by reducing weight or upgrading your FSD. If you manage to get a range of about 10 ly, you should be able to go just about anywhere.

Trading has been 'improved TM' so the profits are pretty poor everywhere.

Hauling missions are a good source of income. Once you raise your reputation you'll be allied in a lot of stations so more missions will appear.

If you're new please don't do the kill missions until you have a nice buffer of credits.

Probably because your starting frame shift drive (jump drive) can't handel longer jumps. Save up some credits and upgrade! I guess you could also wipe and start over, but if you really wish to continue you can ditch your weapons and shields, which will make your ship lighter and lengthen your jump range

As others have mentioned, it is all about your jump range. Weight affects jump range so....

Not carrying cargo - greater jump range
Removing Equipment - greater jump range
Use up some fuel - greater jump range
Upgrade Equipment - Buy a lighter piece of equipment - Greater Jump range
Upgrade Equipment - Buy a more powerful FSD - Greater Jump range

If you don't want to do much in the way of combat to begin with, you can get rid of your two pulse lasers. That will save you quite a lot of weight, and they're fairly cheap to buy back when you feel like fighting again.

Thanks for the advice guys.

I think i may try my luck on the bulletin boards and try and make some cash that way so i can buy a better FSD

Resetting is not an option... that would be like asking to be born again.

This.

When you go to outfitting and click on each internal item, it shows you the increase or decrease in weight. So if you have a class E fitted, typically going to, say D, will give you weight decrease, and over on the right side of the screen it shows your jump range go up or down acordingly, as well as your weight, power usage etc.
