How to get Elite in VR looking CRYSTAL CLEAR.:D

Bump due to people still ask how to fix the vr resolution problem on the Rift and the Vive.

Big Thank You to Z for posting and Aio for bumping..

I followed this post and now Elite Dangerous is unplayable even after setting everything back to factory settings. I get artifacting when I move my head and it takes a few seconds for the graphics to pop into place. Its like looking through a tube and when you turn your head all you see is black, white and orange all stretching into infinity and then after a few seconds it pops out and reforms to what it should be.

Everything was fine till I followed this post and now I can't play Elite anymore with the Vive.

Not sure if this will affect anything

The newest non-beta version of SteamVR is doing the same thing that the beta versions did, and wasn't fixed...for people who manually change their SuperSampling by editing the config file and putting in the following example line:
"renderTargetMultiplier" : 1.5,

if you then go into SteamVR options and change ANYTHING your value will often automatically be rounded up...from 1.5 to 2.0 in the config file in this example. I think merely playing some games will also round up the number. This will cause lower framerates and stuttering if your graphics card can't handle the higher SuperSampling value...I was hoping it would be fixed in beta before it went live but it looks like it wasn't.

FYI I've fixed the super sampling setting on the latest version of the EDProfiler tool. Also, I have no idea why you'd turn SS down with a 1080! Just leave it at 1.0 and set the pixel density to 1.7 or whatever you feel most comfortable with.

Thanks for the information! I will update my post to reflect the changes.

I've found that a 0.65 in-game setting allows for a 2.0 render target. Due to the fact that the render target setting is global, not just Elite but everything I see within the Vive looks great. Especially the Twitch chat window I have set up inside my cockpit. :D

I can vouch for 1.0 in game and 1.5x in SteamVR is far better than 0.65 in game and 2.0x in SteamVR. Anyone who doubts it, set them and screenshot the monitor preview and compare the 2... I settled on 1.0 in game and 1.7x in SteamVR.

I'm kind of lost pls help, so this "1.0 in game" when I have the HMD on I just look in settings while in ED and I should see it? Same goes for this "1.5 in SteamVR" where do I go to change this value? My question is really where do I find these values and how do I change them?

I have a big problem with this thread.

I followed the advice here and now all I get in Elite Dangerous via the VR vive headset is a tunnel like vision and when I look to either side all I see is blackness and then a sudden jerk of movement in my vision and I can see what should be the forward facing view. So for example I am looking out of the cockpit and look to my left or right. The screen will take a few seconds to update and when it does I see the cockpit view instead of my left or right panels. I have reset everything back to default but its not cleared the issue up for me and yet other VR games run fine on the vive without any problems.

You need to set those settings in the SteamVR config file / EDprofiler.

Hey mate, now that you're on a 1080, are you using a specific set of values in the Nvidia control panel ? care to share?

UPDATE 8/12/16: I have found the BEST software for recording VR gameplay to be Mirillis Action! I'm now able to record 1080p 60FPS footage, stream to Twitch and play in VR at the same time without any issues. :D

Can you share your setup for these recordings?

And thank you for your time and this great guide.

No problem Farinhir.

You'll probably get more performance out of the games and applications recording mode. I just happen to use the active screen capture.

The following shows my settings:

z4.MAFIA have you tried beta of 2.2? Been using the rendering tweak for some time and got sometimes some reprojection kicking in, but in recent beta 2.2 with Vive, things got out of hand and reprojestion is mostly on....

I must say I cannot.

I find that a render target of 2.0 and an in-game of .65 or .75 to be far superior at providing a clean image in ED compared to any other combination. I don't need a second monitor for comparing; my eyes work just fine and station lines and jaggies make it very clear to me that 2.0 + .65 is the way to go.
