How to get Elite in VR looking CRYSTAL CLEAR.:D

I was using SS 0.75 and HMD quality 1.75 and my 1080 was just about holding on to 90fps. However, I recently increased shadows to High (which is where they start to look good) and now I think I might have to drop that HMD quality back to 1.5.

I'll try lowering SS to 0.75. Thanks! Was using OP setting as a starting point and hoping that my 1080 @ 2025 could hold the values suggested. I guess SS 1.0 and HMD 1.75 is not realistic with 2.2 after all.

What settings are people using now that have good hardware and either the Vive or Rift? I just started playing after months of absence, and this is still the most confusing game when it comes to VR settings.

Firstly the default resolution in a VR headset i low (720p), but I dont remember if that actually does anything. I would like suggestions for good settings on a 1080 and i7 6700.

I just tried these settings, but have cleard away the hotas for the night. o7

with that hardware, you can easily get 45-90fps with these settings:

I really want 90 fps all the time if possible. Even in stations. I am not currently running Horizons.

in your image, the left collum with the resolution is set to 1080p and 60fps, while the HMD's run at 90 and 1900x1200. Why do you use those settings? Do they not apply at all to the HMD settings, but only to the monitor settings?

44FPS IS where ASW kicks in and emulates 90fps. Works extremely well. If you want to disable asw and get 90fps, you'll probably never achieve it as there are always going to be jarring micro stutters and what not.

I don't care about those settings as the game always resets it. They are supposed to apply to the second window but it doesn't work atm

Ok thanks. How does stations look in 45fps with ASW? How is it when jumping out of hyperspace?

edit: and ASW is on, by default, when Oculus Home (>1.1) is running right? Even though the game is launched in Steam?

ASW is a frame blending method that cuts your fps to 45 and the blends each frame to give you 90fps. Works a charm except in circumstances.

In reference to the quote above, it looks mostly fine in ststions. Its gotten very good and the only time I notice it when being raised on the crane. Don't notice it at all in hyperspace. Give it a go and see if you don't get used to it after a while

Edit: think so

Can a kindly fellow please let me know what ASW is? I'd be gratefully appreciative. Ta.

Stands for "Asynchronous Space Warp". Basically a fancy name for software built-in to Oculus which spots that your PC is struggling to maintain 90fps and instead locks it to 45fps and then generates the in-between frames itself in order to mimick 90fps.

It's brilliant for low end rigs since it allows PCs that can only manage around 50fps to maintain the illusion of running VR at 90fps. It effectively lowers the minimum required specification for VR which opens up the Oculus market considerably.

Some people, myself included, find that it can produce odd artefacts (such as wobbly, curved lines) when looking at things like the ED menu interface. Since I'm running a GTX 1080 I actually prefer to turn it off altogether and tweak my graphic settings in order to achieve true (or near as damn it) 90fps.

You can turn it off completely by pressing Ctrl + Numpad 1 and you can turn it back to its default (where it switches automatically when your PC is struggling) by pressing Ctrl + Numpad 4. Note: it always defaults back to the latter so, if you want it off, currently you have to do the Ctrl + Numpad 1 thing every time you start Elite.

The artefacts are now almost gone completely. I can't play with the micro stutters that even a beast pc on low settings has, so immersion breaking. I play with asw and can't live without it. The smoothness is so glorious. Watching a planet come in smoothly as you revolve around it is addictive

Interesting, I might give it another try (although ... these "micro stutters" that people talk about - not sure I've ever seen them, even when I had the GTX 970 ... is there a video somewhere that illustrates what they look like?)

A lazy, forum dad, non-techie, 1984-er, dumb PvP pew pew (yes, we do exist) writes:-

Guys, I love this thread but I'm getting slightly overwhelmed. I really want to tweak my VR settings but have limited time at the PC and tend to just want to get in game and try to blow someone up, or do the dreaded RNG grind, when the wife and kids let me.

So, can any kind soul help me out here with a straight-up settings suggestion?

My hardware is:

Oculus CV1
Intel i7-6700K Skylake CPU, 4 cores, 4.0-4.2 GHz, overclocked by 20%
Nvidia GTX 1080 8GB
Asus Z170M-PLUS Motherboard
32 GB DDR4 3000Mhz memory

The current VR settings I use are VR Ultra, but with SS turned down to 0.65 and HMD turned up to 2.0. No other changes.

These settings seem to work well. So far as relevant, I'm much more interested in clarity in PvP combat (seeing the other guy, sniping etc) and text clarity, not so much in what planets and stations and stuff look like, although of course I do appreciate those things to an extent also.

Can anyone suggest different settings that I could try - basically rather than me trying to work 'em out largely through trial and error, I'm wondering whether there's just an obvious, "OK, with your specs, I suggest you try x, it will probably be much better."

Much obliged and absolutely np if not!

You are using 2D? This is a VR thread.

For 2D the settings would be completely different. Borderless is just good for alt-tabbing, no real need to use full screen.

Lol - no I am in VR!

I meant that while I am playing in VR I have the 2D display set to full screen, as opposed to your settings which use borderless.

Oh right, well those settings get overridden every time you start Elite so it doesn't matter what they are set to :)
