How to level crew and best SLF

OK, my crew and myself killed 619 Thargoid scouts to get him to Deadly, and 1030 to Elite. I was consistently getting 50 Scouts an hour, so 21 hours play time to complete the task. Anecdotally, and based on my previous experience of ranking up both myself and my crew several times, I'd say that it's definitely quicker than a high RES, which is definitely quicker than a CNB.

I bet it's not as easy, or as useful, as exploding passenger ships at tourist beacons.

The only difference (IIRC) is that goid Scouts are always "Elite" whereas passenger ships rank based on your rank.
If you're Elite and you're trying to train-up an SLF jockey, you'll find Elite passenger ships to explode.
If, OTOH, you're Competent then you'll get low-ranked passenger ships to explode.

In either case, bursting passenger ships is almost risk-free and it yields giant piles of mat's so it's a viable option. (y)

"My friend, we need you again, for an update."

So, since I'm triple Elite, full of cash and since crew can now be saved from the rebuy screen, I found myself a young and fresh harmless damsel to rank up, gave her a Guardian Lance and am about to show her around in Bugland. She's already dangerous, after only 6 hours or so, and doing quite well. So NHSS threat lvl 3 and 4 seem to work very well for rankup. I will now try to let her pilot the big ship while I have some fun with the new guardian toy.

She still already takes 8% of my share though.

The NPC crew needs to land at least a shot on another ship to rank up, or is it sufficient to be part of the crew? Do they rank up if I take down the ennemy all by myself, with her being busy with another one, for instance?

Give 'em a lance, find an AXCZ since they're back, and tell them to engage at will. Pack a class 6 bay and launch as soon as you lose one. Scouts for days. I find a dangerous-ranked fighter on aggressive orders can end up scoring more scout kills than I do in the mothership.

'But they're rubbish, they die really quickly'
Size 6 SLF bay = don't care. (y)

Yeah, I've never fitted a class 7 bay to a ship simply because I've never run out of fighters in a C6 before I've run out of ammo or, in the case of my all-laser boat, simply ended up needing a break from flying. Even a C5 bay is pretty hard to expend, the advantage of the 6 is having the second fighter out while the first is rebuilding.

Since fighter pilots take a percentage of your XP whether or not you're using them, do you even have to be using a fighter for them to rank up?

When I get back from the black, I plan to hire a pilot. I also plan to practise my fixed weapon skills in ships like the Vulture and Fer de Lance, which don't carry fighters. Will my fighter pilot's rank benefit from the kills I make in these ships, or will they only rank up when I'm actually using them?

I could always use my K2 as a railboat/fragboat if that's the case, but the K2 is my go-to ship for combat these days, and so for variety's sake I'd rather be spending time in the Vulture or FdL if it's not costing me anything.

I did some testing. It took 619 Thargoid Scout kills to get my crew to deadly, so I reckon another 500 to get Elite. I can kill about 50 Scouts an hour in my Corvette, which isn't optimised, so it's going to take 20 to 25 hours to get to Elite. That's a lot quicker than previous methods.
Doesnt the repair / restock costs cripple you in a 'Vette?
They are great at what they do but caustic hull damage must cost a fortune to repair.

Yes, Thargoid scouts are all Elite and, an NHSS 4 gives a good rank boost to a pilot but every now & then an NHSS 4 has 7 scouts in it who rain down caustic missles. I find that the big ships cost more to maintain than a Thargoid 'hardened' Krait (with no SLF)

I would have thought a NB, CNB or CZ would be the best place to rank a crew member.
