At the heart of this all is Frontier doesnt know what they are doing with PvP. if they had a clue CQC wouldnt be a barren wasteland.

They could say do something interesting like make CGs based around pvp.

Instead of just hauling stuff or bringing bonds to a station, maybe make the CG hub a place wbhere you queue for a wing group and the mission is to haul/escort or hijack/destroy the cargo.

everyone in the wing gets tonnage credit for the hauling they escort or credit for the tonnage they stop from reaching the destination via hijacking or blowing up the hauler.

Combat ship pvpers now can escort traders and pirates can try to rob them and have hauler/support ships that repair/carry the loot they take.

You combat log or jump out to save yourself you dont get credit.

PvP is now fun and meaningful. traders/bounty hunters and killers all sing kumbaya instead epeen wagging about combat logging.

Of course clogging and genuine dc's will look identical, I'm not saying that. But if they can detect a recurring theme and it happens more so in combat then why wouldn't they be able to identify it? On pc you have a CMDR log. You can freely read it and I'm pretty sure fdev will be able to as well. It logs everything you are doing (I'm assuming you know about this).

I was not clear enough with my point, I think. For instance:

Even with reading the CMDR logs and FDEV knowing everything a CMDR does, a CMDR can specifically pepper in disconnections/network errors of the non-combat variety, regularly in their gameplay that shows a pattern that they want FDEV to see. Since we have access to the CMDR log too, we can then manipulate it easily to show a random dispersal of disconnections that combat logging is just a minor part so as to be indistinguishable from legitimate disconnections. CMDR logs can be manipulated to be completely useless in detecting combat logging, just through regular gameplay with enough randomly dispersed disconnections.

If I had the talent, I think I would implement something like this:

If a player disconnects below a random threshold of damage, they have a limited percentage chance of losing the battle and being destroyed and the winning player getting credit. It wouldn't happen every time, and since the threshold is random, it can't be determined when the correct time to combat log is. It fits nicely with FDEV's insistence on rolling the dice for everything else. It could be limited to combat situations so all the other random disconnections are not affected. We already know they can easily detect combat situations so it should be fairly straightforward to go one step further and adapt their RNG to the combat logging situation. Russian roulette with a space ship.

Personally. Before I ever PvPed never had a problem with players. My brother (PC, had it Elite long before I did) told me to ALWAYS A-grade your ship.
And I would suggest people tread carefully at CGs.

The early bird gets the worm but the second mouse gets the cheese...

In any other game I've played online and loose my connection, I suffer, it counts as a loss. It's my fault, it's my internet, I choose to play when I know its bad. I've played games on my phone and lost service and I loose. I can't think of any other game where if my internet dies I come out ok.
When playing Elite if I knew my internet could affect me loosing my ship if I was in open I would only play in solo. Why should it effect anyone else's game but yours?
It should be that when you loose connection your ship stays in game, until you log back in.
I always quit the game while docked at a station.

You do know people would abuse such a mechanism?

eg:
- Player1 interdicts Player2
- P2 forces a disconnect to P1
- P1's ship sits there immobile
- P2 destroys P1's ship
- P1 logs back in to rebuy screen
(or visa versa)

Unless you have dedicated servers, how does the game tell who "logged" when a connection is dropped...

I could give about zero !/@#s about clogging, but in your scenario here, how exactl does player 2 "force a disconnect" on player 1?

Caring or not caring aside he does bring up a good point. How does someone force a disconnect on another player?

If that doesn't get answered, then we're just using the merry land of imagination to shoot down an good idea. :D

This is from memory, as the idea of leaving a DC'ed ship remaining has been mentioned in other threads: but you know the IP of incoming connections (given Peer-to-peer), so you then have a script that blocks "unknown" IPs to your router (ie: not ones to your ISP, FDev etc, basically any other CMDR's IP), hence dropping them.

Hopefully someone else will chip in with the proper explanation, or not, if such discussion is against ToS.



Ditto when people propose the idea to give extra rewards for playing in Open. Disable uPnP, and you can join Open, but essentially never instance with another CMDR. Which would give a CMDR all the extra bonus credits from playing in Open, while being in Solo.

Wouldn't that result in a desync, which can look very different than a log, and not have player 1 lose connection? The game data would surely reflect that

Even so, the number of people capable, let alone willing, to do this is far far lower than the number of people who log currently

Also, I have no idea what you mean by extra money I'm open
