htc vive controllers

Do the HTC vive controllers work with Elite Dangerous? I am unclear on how to navigate. I don't own a joystick. On my system, I enabled HMD in graphics options. I can look around using the HTC Vive Headset and use a mouse, but the controllers don't show like in other HTC Vive titles. What do I need to do to get them to work? Sorry if this question has been asked before. I just cant seem to find a clear answer.

Much appreciate

My initial thoughts were "no" they are not supported.

But then I figured I'd never actually tried myself, does E: D recognise button presses from the controllers if you try to customise your control settings?

What I am sure of is that it would be pretty pointless if it did work just as a controller, there are so few buttons available. It would have to be fully integrated, like you'd actually be able to reach out and press the buttons with the controller and tracking. It definitely does NOT do that.

So unless you were also using voice attack, I don't see that you would gain anything by using the vive controllers.

You'll have to stick with keyboard and mouse, but I can recommend getting voice attack and even ponying up for an official voice pack http://hcsvoicepacks.com/ this works very well with Vive.

I'm using a steam controller with ED and the Vive. I like it a lot. The steam controller is extremely customizable.

It would be cool if they could integrate the vive controllers somehow though. Use one to steer the ship just by moving/twisting it around, the other one to control trottle and thrusters, press on the pad(s) at various points to fire things, squeese one for FA OFF... each controller independantly has 6-DOF, would be nice if these could be mapped to various axes somehow. Would probably need some creative deadzone capability though or it might become tiring too quickly. maybe they are only active while you're holding the trigger, and when you let go you can move them around, and when you pull the trigger again, they pick up where you left off without applying the intervening movement.

HOTAS is the only way to go for accurate flight sim control. The hand controllers would be too futzy and there's not enough buttons to do the things you need to do in combat. Keyboard + hand controllers would be a bad combo to coordinate.

Unless, of course, the hand controllers allowed you to interact with the actual cockpit...grab the joystick, press the grip button (probably as a toggle effect) and you're in flight mode. Move the controller to use the stick. Press grip again to release, look right to your role screen, reach out and touch modules and hey presto, it's a touch screen...select the changes...reach back.

That's the mistake people make with VR, they think of controllers as separate hardware. For a really immersive experience, they should be your hands; the controllers are in the software.
