Reduce them to what? I'm lagging in station with a 1080 strix on VR low!
That's not normal. Something is wrong with your system Virgil. My system (apart from the GPU) is actually old and subpar, and my GPU is much slower than yours.
EDIT: How much ram and what CPU do you have?
8GB DDR3 and a AMD 8350fx.
your CPU is *much* better than mine (http://www.cpubenchmark.net/compare.php?cmp[]=1780&cmp[]=822), so is your GPU. The only difference would be the additional 8GB RAM I have, but I doubt that makes much of a difference in this case.
Can you try the settings I described earlier to see if it makes a difference. As Skafen said, turning Occlusion off is really the main point though.
EDIT: here are my settings. The last setting beneath what is visible, which is also related to "Terrain Quality", is also on ULTRA. Chaperone SS is on 1.75.

Maybe you could shy away from the ultra settings but I don't have any point of reference for good 1080 settings. AA did give me a good FPS drop, as did shadows but you have AA disabled and shadows on medium and your rig is much stronger than mine.
That will be Jacques station in the EOL-PROU area.I noticed there is a civilized system about 20k LY away from both Sol and me.. whichever abyss they crawled out of is beyond me. Registers at 750 residents. Makes me curious but I'm headed in the other direction.[noob]
On the subject of performance has anyone else noticed that the presence of a graphically demanding planet in the vicinity seems to affect performance within a station even when the planet is not visible?

I can't believe you still cannot play Elite with a Vive properly.
