HUGE Class Ships

How about this: we get Huge Class ships.

What are they? Basically larger than large class but still significantly smaller than capital ships. If the Cutter for example is 200m long, huge can maybe be 300-350m long.

Of course, this will make them too big for mail slots and landing pads. Maybe they could have their own specialised docks with docking clamps (meaning they don't have landing gear. Think of a smaller version of capital shipyards).

Of course this size will come with extremely bad maneuverability. Multi crew would be encouraged to manage a ship of this size.

As for what ships we can get, I'm thinking an Imperial Cruiser and Federal Destroyer, requiring the ranks of King and Admiral respectively.

Weapons could maybe be 2 huge, 4 large and 6 medium.

What is my reasoning for wanting ships like these? We have Small, Medium, Large and Huge class weapons, but only the first 3 sizes in ships. We need to spice things up a bit with THICC monster ships.

Lastly, how do you explore planets with these? Here's my idea: once the ship hits a certain altitude in orbital flight, you'll get the option to deploy in a smaller landing ship. Basically a modified federal/imperial eagle (depending on the Huge ship) that doesn't have a FSD and is only meant to carry down the SRV. When you want to leave, you jump back into the eagle and call down the Huge ship like you would in the SRV. You then dock and the ship will head back into orbital cruise.

Price wise, maybe 2.5 billion to A-Rate each one

Not a bad idea, what I like most is the ability to use a small ship like the eagle to descend on planets, doing some high speed low altitude flights on some of the planets found outside the bubble is a dream of mine.

Been asked for months now, Boa in particular, long as they end the D*** COPY & PASTE METHOD that is a game killer right there. However new ships in coming the krait phantom we know, well again a copy & paste with a wire loop extender fitted tot he back, but the others I serious hope they are new!!!!!!!!!!!!! Frontier...

Panther Clipper? :D

Yeah the Boa was another 'classic' vessel, described as a much larger Anaconda that could "buy some starports entirely out of stock". (suggesting a comfortable cargo capacity of well over 1,000t) it is suggested to have twice the mass over the anaconda.

I think the main issue is here is balancing, Huge cargo ships would crush CG requirements in no time at all, Corvettes and Cutters can be engineered to have crazy shields, imagine something with much bigger Slots (size 9?).

Don't get me wrong, I love the idea! it would help fill in some gaps in terms of operational ships. but if it were to be done, it would need ALOT of thought!

Edit: just read the Boa stats, it had a cargo capacity of 1300t, there was also a Griffin ship as well with 2184t cargo capacity which is second to the Panther Clipper (site says 2100t, but it think that is a typo from 3100t)

These ships would be rather fitting lore wise if added.. but as I said before, they need to be balanced!

@Jaylem

I guess the main balance for Huge ships is they would be monstrously expensive and have really slow manoeuvrability. Their combat blind spots could be right behind them.

Traders for example like the Boa or Panther would be vulnerable from behind and can't outrun anything, while combat ships would need to rely heavily on ship launched fighters to cover their flanks.

I'd love to have a ship that would NEED to act like a capital ship - primarily use turrets and passive/active measures of defence. Cutter and Corvette are both agile enough to use fixed weapons, which means they are used the same as a fighter...

Farragut class and for any player group that can afford to buy one then FDEV put in the Dock into that player groups home system that way each player group has their own dock and safe place to return too
All weapons are turreted and can be flown by a single commander but get damage bonus if they have multicrews operating guns
If it goes critical then it jumps out of system and returns to base just like NPC ones non destuctable player ship

Seriously? As if there isn't a large enough Cr wall in the game already. The large ships are already inflated as it is.
Creative, just not realistic.

Due to the restrictions of instancing and issues of persistence there is no way that carriers will be flown in real time. \They will be megaship style movement, much like the gnosis.

Maybe in FE2, but in Elite, the Boa was described as a Python replacement, and SMALLER than an Anaconda.
Of course with the retconning of original ships, it could be anything now.

Yes, stuff like this has been proposed many times, mostly in connection with the Panther Clipper.

I never said megaship. I'll break it down for you.
Large ships like the Big 3 are 150-200 meters long.
Mega and capital ships are 2km long.
What I suggest is about 300-350 meters long. Way smaller than a mega or capital ship. I don't know where you people got the idea that I suggested flying a mega ship

Go play another game then...

Wut? Even I didn't think it was the most stupid whine suggestion ever. And I think everything is the most stupid whine suggestion ever.

Potential ships already exist for the class including the boa, panther clipper, imperial explorer...

Unfortunately it's no longer viable either: FD have steered the game in such a direction that we don't have enough offsets for even bigger ships. The credit cost would still be meaningless, and with engineering you could reliably expect to blow up every ship you pull the trigger on before they have half the time needed to respond to your attack.

I vote we go the other way.

Jump capable and engineerable SLF's that can't be lauched from bigger ships as the tradeoff.

All weapons avalible to other fighters could be made avalible in fixed/gimbal between it's two hardpoints, one utility slot and the internal options of the CqC ships.

(I know, wishful thinking)

The one problem here is that the weapons would have to be tuned down, and people would whine about that no end.

SLFs have artificially inflated power on their weapons - iirc, their weapons are around the power of large weapons.

We don't need SLF agility and size with engineered large weapons. It's basically giving you a cheaper vulture with even more agility and huge speed.

But it does sound fun.

Honestly though a properly engineered iCourier is pretty much the same thing ;)

Frontier has already hinted at Huge Class ships and that they either want to make a new station type or put docking mechanisims on the outside of existing stations for Class 4 (Huge) ships. Which will likely include the Boa and the panther
