I are a Noob - welcome meh!

Try following the space police around at a nav beacon, wait until they've almost killed a pirate then land the last few shots and steal the kill. Easy money for the early game.

Be careful of the cops with friendly fire they'll turn on you if you hit them.
Exactly what I was doing! Half an hour got me just over 370K - but I'll admit it was just plain great fun! I can see myself doing that quite a bit before actually leaving the "safe-zone". Is there a suggested cash cap before doing so? Number of missions? Level?

You can do the same, but make a lot more money in the high Resource Extraction Site in Dromi. It's the same as the nav beacon, but a lot more pirates and a lot more cops. Action is more or less continuous. You can make between 1 mil and 2 mil per hour in the Sidewinder.

If you've left the starter system, nip across to LTT 15574, which is always nice and busy. Lots of nice stuff to buy in Haxel port. The other busy RESs are in Kremainn, Brani and Freng, all nearby. You can collect a billion in bounties in the systems around there if you do it right:

Do it whichever way you like. If you gain a rank increase you have to leave the starter zone. Be ready for other players, much more dangerous than NPC's (hollow icon) you'll encounter player killers around busy stations like the engineers, Shinrarta or community goals.

The most important thing (I think) is knowing how to escape when it goes wrong. I run from fights before my shields drop hull as damage is for mugs.

Escapology guide :

Do this

Submit to the interdiction, your cool-down is faster (not applicable to escaping a fight)
As soon as you drop out of super-cruise max pips to engines 2 to shields (opposite for flying tanky ships)
Start boosting at full throttle away from the hostile (or back past it if it's a less manoeuvrable ship than yours)
Spam chaff
Select a nearby system and start your jump (can't be mass-locked)
Evade whilst boosting until you jump
Once you've jumped drop out of super-cruise select another nearby star and jump again (repeat if necessary)
Return to desired course

Do not

Waste time wondering who he is or what he wants (interdiction is hostile)
Waste time talking
Fly without shields
Combat log (pull the plug)

Random question for you guys - I'm suddenly suffering from "anonymity protocols" - is this to do with my login or have I accidentally shot/crashed into someone/something I shouldn't have without realising?

EDIT: Google told me where to pay my 200 credit fine, not sure what I did to get it though :(

See if you have a FINE to pay off, check your left panel.
If it's a BOUNTY you can either go to Gaol, or find an Interstellar Factor to pay it off.

Got it, thanks. Not sure how I got the fine though, would damage from a stray shot onto a space cop cause that? Would I get a message staying "I'm a space cop! Stop shooting me!"
Um, er, maybe.
Problem is you can pick fines up for a wide variety of things. I would say, don't worry about fines, pay them off asap.

With friendly fire they all attack you so you can tell, they will occasionally tell you to check your fire especially if you are allied but there's no fine for that.

Its probably reckless flying, did you bump into any ships landing or taking off ?

Negative - although I may well have rammed a space copper at an engagement in the belts...

For shooting a cop or innocent ship, you get a bounty, not a fine. You get fines for loitering in the slot at the station or over landing pads and bumping a ship while exceeding the 100m/s speed limit around the station. Most likely, it was the last one.

You also get bounties on you when you get scanned by the cops with illegal goods or passengers and you get them for scanning a private data beacon. You will see "Wanted" in red above the fuel gauge. When you're wanted, you mustn't get scanned by the cops because they will try to kill you, and if you had docking permission, it'll get revoked. Don't hand yourself in at any station. Instead, fly to the nearest low security system with a station, and go and see the Interstellar Factor there, who will clear your bounty,.

First, let me welcome you to the Elite: Dangerous Galaxy. My rule 2 is; Have Fun (it is just a game, but WHAT a GAME!). Rule 2a is; In VR have LOTS more fun!!!

The learning curve is so steep (it has an overhang!) that the mountain goats go around in teams, roped together (and even then they may fall off, but that means the Vultures get to eat!). However, when you master something, and do it well, the buzz is worth the effort. To my mind the most important skill to master is landing your ship. Until you can do this nothing else matters (how can you complete a mission, for example, if you killed yourself on landing?). It would be a good idea to go through some of the Training missions to start learning the necessary skills to survive.

Now, Golden Rule 1, which is; Never Fly if you cannot cover the REBUY. REBUY is the insurance excess on your ship, and is 5% of the value of your ship (including all upgrades, but not the cargo). Any changes you make to a ship will affect the REBUY. You can see what your REBUY is on the Status screen (normally accessed by pressing key 4 when in cockpit view, although I do not know how to access the Status screen on a console), bottom left, below Balance. If you get killed, and you can cover the REBUY, you will get a replacement ship identical to the one you lost (although the cargo bay will be empty). However, if you cannot cover the REBUY you may well end up back in a basic Sidewinder. Please do not let this happen to you, as the forum is littered with tales of woe when other Players have ignored Rule 1, and then got killed. This links to a classic one I have seen;

You will, at various stages, upgrade your ship (buying is covered in the next paragraph). Be aware that all internal equipment has numbers and letters associated with them. The number is the Class, while the letter is the Rating. Until you have a good understanding of the Class make sure (when upgrading) to fit the same Class as the unit coming out. There are stories of Players who fitted a 1A FSD to their Sidewinder, thinking it would help increase the jump range, only to find that (as the FSD that came out was a Class 2) they had REDUCED the jump range. The letter is for Rating, with E being the weakest and A being the strongest. However, there are two that confuse this somewhat. All D Rated equipment are very light (and are preferred by Explorers for this reason), while B Rated has heavy armour (which is great for combat specialists). I do not (at this time) intend to explain weaponry, as this is definitely a matter of personal preference.

When you decide to buy a new ship, try to have 200% of the purchase price first. That way you have enough for the ship, some basic outfitting, a couple of loads of cargo, and a couple of REBUYs (just in case). If you are trading in a ship, take it back to factory spec first. When you sell any ship you will always take a 10% hit on the value of the ship at the time of selling. However, if you take it back to factory spec first you get back the full amount that you paid for the upgrades (at this time, at least). Then, when you sell the ship, your losses will be reduced. For example, I have an A Rated Cobra MkIII worth 10Mcr. If I were to sell her now I would take a loss of 1Mcr. However, if I take her back to factory spec and then sell her my loss will be about 35Kcr.

One final piece of advise I have is that, when something within the Game gets boring, switch to something else for a while. There are so many different things you can do it should not be difficult to stay interested. I, for example, will alternate between Trading, RES Combat, Exploring and helping new Players in Starter Space (and there are a whole lot MORE in the way of things to do!).

Have fun, fly safely, and see you out amongst the stars. Feel free to ask any questions, we all had to learn somewhere, and those that care will answer all they can.

Definitely feeling the love - thanks for the input everyone. So far the most dangerous thing I have to deal with is Spoon Trek 2: The Wrath of Wife (when she finds me yet again pew pewing space pirates)!!

Some of my favourite memories are from these early days :D
Me too (without the #). 😉
The days when I was squeezed for cash and had to think hard before buying or upgrading, were the most challenging and rewarding. Climbing that learning curve was a bit of a challenge too. But the fun we had in those days. 👨‍🚀

Any chance on a little more advice please?

I'm sat in a Viper Mk 3 which I've found to be far more rewarding regarding sniping bounties from the cops and have just over 4Million in the bank. I've got a mission that says "Exploring the galaxy" which I think sends me away from the little area I've been pew pewing in and I also have another option which I found in the "engineers" tab. That one says I need to go to a "Guns McGuns" guy and give him 100K in bounty receipts to unlock his options.

Recommendations? Suggestions?

EDIT: I'm kind of ignoring the obvious "buy X, go to Z, sell for profit" shenanigans for now

I would say that you should go for the Engineering one. You would need a ship with a long jump range for the Exploration one. Missions come up all the time we get spammed by them. The Engineering invitation will stay in your codex so you can pick it up when you want. The Engineering invitation will take you to landfall planets where you land at a station.

Well, I got to the System where the engineer is before encountering my first "PvP" and it was just as we all expected! Interdicted by 2, dead before I deploy weapons! No point undocking in seal club areas so I've just logged. Oh well.

On the other hand Exploring is safer. 🏳
Now you know what Open is like. Join Mobius or another PvE group until you feel like getting your own back.

Solo mode is strongly suggested while flying in those systems.

I have met Blaster Pants McGavin! I gave him some bounties! Now I think I have to buy a vehicle hangar for my Viper, go to a planet and pew myself some sulphur! Gonna try a quick courier run just to see what the benefits are like, but should I stick with BlasterPants McGavin for now? Just use his system as a base for a few missions and grind him? Is that how folks do engineers?
