Newcomer / Intro I cant navigate in the cockpit while docked

So after spending almost an hour figuring out how to undock from the initial space station it seems I have to ask here.

When I'm in the cockpit I simply cant navigate around. I see the three option in front of me; Starport Services, Return to Surface and Launch. I have no mouse pointer when I'm in cockpit mode so I cant choose Return to Surface or Launch. I can click the marked Starport Services by either pressing spacebar or button 1 on my joystick so I go the next screen where the mouse pointer is enabled and usable. I can also press 1 so I enter or exit the navigation window. But I cant choose anything at all.
I have checked all my settings (they're set to default mode and my controller is set to the generic joystick), reloaded the game etc.. No success. So I have no clues about how to undock. Isnt that great? :)

Am I missing a mouse pointer in the cockpit window or have I missed something else completely?

You need to bind the keys for navigating the UI's, usually w,a,s,d. There is a lot of key binding to do, just press escape and bind them. Also space bar to accept.

I've often thought it odd that the main menu when docked can be driven with the mouse but as soon as you look to the left and right the mouse cursor disappears. Possibly a fault in the ships OS, not being able to properly cope with a triple monitor setup. ;)

Does your JS have a hat switch . I think it defaults to that to navigate the menu.

If not as Whiterose says go into options / controls and map keys or indeed js buttons to the required action you want. Most will be already mapped to something . The space bar is the default "select" button as I remember but I dont use that any more as I mapped it to somehere else so I cant be sure.

You not going to like this but , an hour mapping the keys you want is worth it . Oh map them in the training missions as well not in the game itself as you may find all sorts of nasty things happen like boosting into a wall or something or fireing at the station.

Aaaaaahhhhh! I have completely missed that part in the settings when I checked them (several times actually). Thank you very much! :)

My JS is an old and cheap Logitech Attack3 I bought for Colin Mcrae Rally several years ago. So no top-hat. But I skipped it and returned to my oldschool CH mach 2 joystick with a gameport + gameport card. :)
Luckily I'm not afraid for remapping as I'm lefthanded and remapping is almost mandatory for peeps like me when the mouse is place on the left side of the keyboard. Also I find the keys around the keypad much better for keybinding as they keys are better placed to each other than WASD.

Nop, that's intentional
