Engineers I dont despise the Engineers but...

I accept the points made and the limitations highlighted. I think it highly unlikely that anything will be produced that is any more than a different flavour of the same. The game seems to be limited by the game engine and the vision of the developers. And as such its what we are stuck with

I personally like it and have enjoyed the engineers. I wanted to unlock all the ones i needed and got all the mods i needed without too many difficulties and without it feeling in the least bit grindy. And I wanted to do it before it got dumbed down. Which I have

The people who only have a few hours here or there to play the game don't have the time to engineer their ship ( not our fault ) You play the game long enough and you get bored. trade fly trade fight trade fly dock dock it just gets boring. For me I was bored till engineers came along. Now it forces me to play all aspects of the game to get the mats. It's a very deep game to me for this reason. Give the engineers a try ? Perhaps a few quick modifications to allow you to play the game your way ?

Gave it a try.

The RNGineers are terrible. The crafting setup makes zero sense in this universe. It's a copy paste hack job. The grind is horrid. I don't enjoy trading or mining. Forcing me to do either just means I go play another game, and take my wallet with me.

Engineers should have been sliders. Simple. Elegant. Pay credits. Tweak stuff. One thing gets better, while you make tradeoffs elsewhere.

Instead, we got a blatant clone of some crap free to play, fantasy game crafting grind.

Besides the horribly grindy gameplay this is what vexes me the most - it is just so horribly out of tune with the feel of the Elite universe. This gritty, science fiction interpretation of the future, and then suddenly you have "engineers" with lottery wheels and magical materials dropping from random rocks and ships. It is horribly horribly gamey, and sadly unavoidable. Whoever let this design get past the drawing board should be given other duties...

Well said. I agree completely.

I've tried to love the Engineers. I truly have.

When they were announced I was a bit wary, by the time they were released I was horrified.

I thought they'd be able to produce small incremental upgrades that would keep ships in balance even if you specialized on one area or another. Things that would make it worthwhile to keep your small ships or switch to a specific platform. perhaps stuff that would compensate a bit for the ships with gross handicaps. That's because by that time FD already had enough experience to discern things that would cause chaos in terms of the game balance.

That was not to be. We received a literal infestation of Noob-de-Lances instead.

That's mostly people sitting on a super-engineered Fer-de-lance within their first 100 hours of gameplay claiming that the NPC's at their rank level (some flavor of green) can't give them a challenge. You know them, they go around ganking people in waves during community goals and combat-logging when they are ganked back. I can't completely blame them, as they are playing within the boundaries of the game. But FD should have known better.

With the engineers you can have it all, and in copious amounts. But it breaks the rest of the game by stripping it of a challenge, and it breaks the game for those around you, since it makes everyone who isn't exploiting the meta pretty much a single-bite snack.

I still love ED as a game and the social interactions with like-minded individuals that it allows. However, the Engineers have driven me completely out of open.

Never met one of these people of whom you speak because ive never played in open and never will. My ships with gross handicaps are now resolved to my satisfaction. My annie now zips along, has a massive jump range even with a full load and some pretty competive shields and hull. My python and corvette are now lovely things and are no longer limited by their lack of range. My explorer asp does 50+ and my armed and defended asp 45. Have 10 engineers at level 5, 5 at less and the others i have no need of. Playing the engineers has been fun and the results are fun. Its a win, win all the way for me...

I can understand enjoying the effects of the mods, but the process to get them... I don't know, I can't see anything in there that actually constitutes enjoyable gameplay. It is just simple "go there, fetch this, if you are lucky enough to get the right loot drop". It all seems rather dull. What am I missing?

I raised up that few times after 2.1 dropped, but nobody gave a and just said "Go get Horizons yourself". Lol.
