I exploded... with ninety pages of unsold Exploration data onboard

yea, as i said - it's a game and you seem to be taking it way to serious.

is that a reason to lose the scan data for 5000 systems?
He probably learned a lesson and i do believe in second chances
The second chance is going out there and doing better this time with the knowledge gained from the loss. You know, growth. Not magically getting your loss undone by the dm. If the nature of the game (losing hours of work for a mistake) isn't your cup of tea, you don't have to play the game. No one's holding a gun to your head after all.

Well, actually yes folk find it far too easy to run to support in my opinion. I'm all for it if the loss was caused by a bug, but it simply wasn't the case here.

However, it's the OP that is playing the game, & if it is their "first" mistake then support are likely to help them out, they just probably won't do it a second time.

Hours, days, months. The principal is the same. The real tragedy here is that it took so long to learn the lesson that this loss brought. It's no different than someone getting their first anaconda and losing it because they didn't have enough for rebuy. I feel for him, but we all have to learn these lessons.

I agree, but at some point the punishment becomes way too harsh. And the Explorer gameplay has the most severe punishment in the entire game when it comes about losing the ship. It is really disproportionate

So yes, i'm all for second chances.

Then all the more reason to be extra cautious and safe then, no? Play the game, or don't. If you have an issue with the games design, there's a suggestion sub forum last I checked.

Rules are rules, trying to exempt yourself from the consequences of your mistakes defeats the purpose of the game you play. I learned this the hard way in chess, it has happened to me and it happened to one of my opponents last week, do you know what would have happened if he went with support and asked to take back the move? Nothing... He/she resigned after I took his/her queen with no compensation. In case you wonder, this was in daily chess so the games easily last for months.

On another note, why did you leave ED running? If loading the game is an issue you can log out to the main menu.

Correct, it is also the safest type of gameplay, that's why I don't care.

I thought my life was over when a pirate stole 8 tons of my Painite with a hatch breaker limpet. Now I can see how fortunate I am.

Come on, it's a game. It's supposed to be entertaining, not punishing.
And this is the only game i know that can make a player lose months or even years of game progress in a moment of slipping attention.
That's the players choice, though, isn't it. OP knew the risks yet chose to balance the risk against the chance of achieving a personal goal. In this case he lost, and now accepts the consequences (with good grace,I might add).

Last I heard, you had to avoid respawning from the rebuy screen in order for them to restore the exploration data (rather than just credits), but that may have changed. I've heard people mentioning that they got data restored even after they respawned. So I'm curious what the outcome here is. It may be a good test of how it works currently.

But yeah, it's easy to forget that at zero throttle, that 30 km/sec speed is still substantial. Over a few hours, you can still cover a large distance.

I can sometimes be quite paranoid about these sorts of things. When steering, I often avoid (or at least minimize) sweeping the nose across the star, just in case there's a loss of control input (USB cable unplug, for instance) right when I'm aimed at it. But in my defense, I used to have that happen fairly often, due to Windows popups stealing focus, and disabling HOTAS control until I take the VR headset off and clear whatever popped up.

How does one get as far as the OP did without realizing your ship is still moving forward while in supercruise?

Force of habit I'd assume, in the first post the OP states that "he has done this many times because nothing can kill you out in the black", well now they have found out that big fiery space balls can indeed kill you if given enough time while your ship is travelling towards it, even slowly. Quite a lesson really.

I'm amazed at the rush to beat up on OP. Sad times.
Now I hope support is able to restore the data just to pis off this whiners :D

you're obviously not getting it, likely because you are the ones making it something personal.

if frontier restores this account it compromises all other exploration feats to date, and into the future. of people who, presumably, did so against the normal odds and without second chances. now don't ask me why you have to physically return to a station to sell information in 3300, but that's one central trope of exploration as it is in the game, and which makes it into an achievement.

by reimbursing anything that's not a bug frontier is undermining their own game for all.

yeah, it's only a game. so who cares, right? well, i'm fine with that. not that the game is really consistent in any aspect anyway. and it indeed will feel good (maybe) for op, so good for him. but you guys, you're being really obtuse here, this said with my best feelings.
