I exploded... with ninety pages of unsold Exploration data onboard

Jumped into a Class F system 2161 LY from Sol, then got called away from the PC for a couple of hours. Usually not a problem, done it plenty of times before; out in the deep black nothing ever actually kills you. Not today. Came back to find the "Ship destroyed" screen. No killer identified. There's nothing in the EDD journal reader explaining cause of death, other than "heat warning" 2.5 hours after going AFK and about 15 minutes before death, so I can only assume I simply drifted too close to the star, overheated, and exploded. I guess I forgot to turn the ship nose away fromthe star before going AFK. Didn't run out of fuel, EDD says I still had over 21t left.

I had 86 pages of exploration data onboard, last time I checked a couple of weeks ago. Made several hundred jumps since then. Fortunately, I'd sold my last couple of ELW data at my last port, but everything else is gone. That's about 1.8 billion credits worth of data (assuming an average of 20 million per page), and three months worth of Tags.

How did you check how much data you had? EDD?

No. I've docked half a dozen times since departing on my current survey three months ago, but each time, I only sold the ELW data, leaving the rest unsold. I counted the pages manually, as I was searching through them for my ELWs.

I was saving the rest of the data to sell once I got back into the Bubble.

Did you leave it in supercruise while afk ?

Yep, supercruise at idling speed. I do that quite often when in uninhabited systems. Only danger normally is running out of fuel; so long as I keep the ship topped up every jump, a full tank should last all day. And, apparently, drifting too close to a star is dangerous, too.

My problem is it's a bad habit to get into; got to remember not to do it while back in the Bubble, or I'm bound to get interdicted.

Perfectly safe to be idle in normal space, not so much in SC.

You burn fuel a lot faster in SC, run a lot warmer, are subject to interdiction if stumbled across, and put some wear and tear on the ship (though probably nothing to worry about while idle).

Drifting FA off in normal space is essentially complete safe, if nothing reaches drops in shortly after you do.

Sorry for your loss, CMDR. And yes, being in supercruise while away from the computer isn't as safe as dropping to normal-space, as others have suggested. In my opinion, if you are to leave the computer, don't leave the game running, log out. That way you'll be as safe as can be.

Ah man I’m sorry to hear it. Did the same thing a few years back. Didn’t lose anywhere near as much as you, but it was almost a walk-away moment. Worst of all was I had nobody else to blame! Hope you can get back on the horse and get back out there.

Sorry to hear that, although it does sound kind of inevitable.
Still,it's a rough go.Will you adjust your playstyle?

Try a support ticket - it could help
Losing months of work is really nasty

I've just done so, on the theory that it doesn't hurt to ask. But I'd accept a "nothing we can do" answer.

I haven't clicked on the "purchase rebuy" button yet. Does it matter whether I do or not, from a ticket-solving point of view?

I always thought they can restore your ship so no rebuy money lost but exploration data (and any money gained from selling it) can't and is gone.

Yeowwwwwwwwch!

Sorry, Sapyx. My biggest nightmare is the afk scenario. Calls the FuelRats to bring you a couple bottles of Rye to soothe pain.
