(I find) PvP is boring...

lol, you think FD gives away IP addresses on it's third party API? I bloody hope not!! :D
I run a through a VPN, so they can give away my IP if they want. Speaking of, if ED uses true P2P, then I can find out somebody's IP easily enough by instancing with them in open.

Still, I tend to be a bit nervous about any software that can take data from my drive and put it on the Internet. Now if this tool has an API that would allow me to write my own uploader, I'd find that both acceptable and a fun project. I already do something like this with my weather station. I'm hoping to do something like this for EDSM so I don't have to manually keep uploading my log files.

Unless of course this tool of yours queries Frontier's servers to get this data (I believe Inara does this). Still, there must be something to synchronize things so that you receive live reports of wanted felons.

Heck, I might look into this tool and use it even if I don't join you squadron, just to be a friendly neighborhood watch guy! Like Quigley, my opposition to certain external tools is situational (I'm on this forum after all).

Please feel free to direct your specific questions to the developer, he is a GARD member and a top, top feller, best to reach out to him through the EDR bumph, I guess. Great to hear you will contribute data, it's for a good cause! :D

Or block the connection. And at that point no outside observer can determine who blocked who, only that somehow both are still online but no longer getting each other's data. An interesting idea for those demanding harsh automated CL punishments... ;)

I'd only do that if they were trying to hack me, which is way less likely since my VPN doubles as a remote NAT. If they're doing things in ED that's bad enough to block them on my router, I'll report them instead.

ps - Don't block me this way, or you'll be blocking who knows how many people! I thought I was the only one who played ED through VPN until Frontier broke VPNs and the screaming started.

That's just you and a mate roleplaying something. That's cool and all, and if you get enjoyment out of it please have as much fun as you can. But no actual griefer cares if you 'escort' a trader in your vulture. If I were to grief that trader you would simply not matter, I would completely ignore you and nothing you'd do would influence the outcome in any way. The trader dies or jumps, and you can watch if you want.
FWIW, if Will plays the CG in open for the livestream, then I have no doubt that this will be the case. Still, I think he should do it anyway, for the lulz and so that I can at least TRY to save him in my Hauler.

Not the actual combat, mind you, but rather all the time sitting around waiting for said combat to occur. For every minute of epic battle I've enjoyed during this CG, I've spent who knows how many minutes (hours) sitting in supercruise or at the station just waiting for something to happen. Without a CG, there's random encounters around engineering, but nothing quite of the scale I've enjoyed this week.

Maybe Combat Zone CGs are different, where we're actually given both a location and a reason to fight? If so, does that mean PvP is fun like once per year in this game?

I'm just a hair trigger away from switching to Infinity Battlescape for my spaceship PvP pew-pew fun. Don't get me wrong, ED still has a lot to offer me, but I'm beginning to really think that PvP isn't one of those things. I just don't have the patience!
I recently did a video examining this fact. It was very boring. MUCH LIKE PVP! Sorry to see the Old Duck

Dark syndicate, The Vail, Killer Elite, 100 die hard pvp vets all killed off by the players leaving due to lack of content, and slow release of what we have had.

That's not my opinion, that's a numerical fact, btw. That's not meant to discourage you either, and I have pretend-escort and 'flown CAPS' for canonn when barnacles were discovered for many hours myself. Being an avid roleplayer it was fun! But at no point did I forget that an actual griefer could show up, dumbfire the crap out of all local SRVs while fully ignoring my tiny fighter flying patrol. It's also why the entire 'DW2 'escort' concept was great for roleplay but pointless from a mechanical pov (and why, I kid you not, most 'escorts' only flew in PG!).

So have fun, but in the meanwhile be open about how the game actually works. Who knows, maybe one day it will be balanced to the point escorts actually have a mechanical purpose.

Pardon the interruption in the internet lawyering......

The one effective thing escorts can do is interdict any threatening looking ship in supercruise before the threatening looking ship is able to interdict the trader (or whatever). But yeah, other than that the escort is pretty useless.

"PvP is rare and meaningful". Now, since the game is actually released, this sounds more than an excuse, than proclaiming something exciting.

Funny seeing a discussion about EDR here, which is mostly based on assumptions and general trolling

EDR does nothing beyond reading the Player Journal file from the computer of the EDR user doing the scans. In short; it automates a process that could be done with pen and paper by any player in the game and shares those notes with other players.
Nothing other than what is seen in the game is collected about the user on the other side, as that is not available in the Player Journal file. Go check your own journals and you will see exactly what the EDR users willingly share with the database. IP Adresses? LOL!

Since we're talking an MMO that the user on the other side logged into, there can be no expectatation of privacy on the actions taken there and then, and the information displayed by the game itself. If anyone believes there should be an expectancy of privacy in an MMO, they really need to reconsider their involvement in any online game imho.

Also, if EDR is not in compliance with GDPR, then the game itself and the files it saves on your computer is not and that complaint will lie with FDev, not the third parties.

I remember when I used EDR for 10 minutes and had the developer messaging me on discord asking what I was doing... doesn't sound very GDPR compliant to me...

What's the purpose if not for voice chat? You all use it just like Facebook Messenger or something?
Ooooh, you thought discord was only for voice....? Wow. Sorry, that's not meant to sound rude or condescending, I am genuinely surprised. Discord is like a live forum. Voice is just one thing it can do. Mostly it's for messaging and chatting (in text).

The last time I used Discord, the emphasis was on voice comms, thus my conclusions. This was back when I was on PS4, so I put Discord on my iPad (I think I removed it later). Also, when I'm in the game flying my spaceship, I much prefer using the keyboard I'm sitting at and the text comms built into the game rather than an external tool. If a group uses Discord the way I use this forum, I might be more open to using it.

And while I never actually spoke on Discord myself (much to the chagrin of others in my instance), I started to get annoyed with the banter coming through my speaker. I play this game to escape, as a "world of make-believe" where I actually am a CMDR in 330_. So when people were going on about their dogs and aunts and religion and politics and who knows what else, I just turned off the Discord and got back to flying my spaceship.

Again, this is an experience I'm struggling to relate to. I don't joina voice channel unless we're in operations, and if someone starts talking about their granny during an operatoin they will quickly get told to be quiet. Here's what ours looks like...

All of those channels you see are text channels, there is no intrusive voice...you are not required to join a voice channel, in fact I find people who are always in the voice channels a bit weird ;) The only voice channel visible in that shot is the bar phone.

Did he call you at home? Send an e-mail to your private address? Look up your IP address and figure your ISP out?

And did he contact you out of the blue? Or did you spam the bot with non-compliant commands that caused it to give out error messages on the server side?
