I'm afraid this is the explanation.Self-compusting SRV is a known issue. Bug.
Many commanders including myself have experiences these many times already.
Good luck with the hunt.

Whats this barnacle you guys are talking about?
Hang on now, so I did manage to explore the same place you mentioned, but couldn't find anything out of the usual. I did move to Merope to explore its moons as my next target, and I'm still there.
Do we actually even know what the signal shape and sounds are for those... barnacles, or whatever they are? Is it viable that we should be expecting those tall signals? Every time I come across one, I get somewhat excited, and destroyed a little when I realize it's just a data point, or a bunch of useless canisters. I am becoming more eager to find whatever these strange things are, lol. Also, another few questions are: Will they be in somewhat special areas, like ravines, mountains, or cliffs? And does it matter if it's in the dark or light side?
In the Horizons release video, two SRVs can be seen driving up to a group of structures, which emit a green light as they approach. They have since been confirmed to be in the game somewhere in the Pleides Nebula, and possible other nebula throughout the galaxy. For some reason, the community has taken to calling them "Barnacles."
The signature I found on the surface was a very large crashed ship, and my SRV exploded due to a bug.
In terms of what we know about the structures so far, they've been confirmed to found as POI radar signatures (the tall ones - probably with the same width as crashed ships), and can be persistent objects. I can't attest to what sound they make, but I suspect it would be different than the normal "Deep whistle" that you here from POIs. Also, considering that well over 1000 players searching the less than 50 landfall planets in Pleides haven't found anything yet, I'd say they've probably been given random coordinates by the in game code, and been placed on a few planets in very small concentrations. It's only a matter of time before someone stumbles across one. Frontier has made it very clear that if you happen across one, it will be unmistakable.
With no warning whatsoever, my SRV going 40 kph with full shields and 77% hull health exploded. There were nothing on the minimap when it happened, no grey dots, no yellow dots, nothing.
It's a known bug, the SRV should be recalled at some point for to fix that and the faked emissions tests.

The Meta-Alloy in game description refers to "Large Barnacles".For some reason, the community has taken to calling them "Barnacles."
I think Barnacles are just another marketing move. People are searching it quite some time and no one came across it? I'm not buying it.
what the hell are they....glitch in your sound card!........7:57 sounds human......
Nice found. All they need now are just a meaning ....
