I need HELP! Cannot install game.

Ok,
Newbie obviously. I didn't get the Beta, but I did recently purchase the so called full release of Elite Dangerous. I installed the ED launcher and through that had no problem installing the Combat Training Demo. However, when I try to install the full version of Elite Dangerous I get the following error

"There is no disk in the drive. Please insert a disk into drive/Device/Harddisk4/DR4."

First: I was under the distinct impression that the $60.00 U.S. I paid for Elite Dangerous was a downloadable content version, meaning there was no disk being sent to me. In fact, there is absolutely nothing to indicate that there is a disk involved with my purchase. It says, "Download here".
Second: I do not have a Harddisk4/DR4. I don't even know what that is, but it sure isn't a drive on my computer.

So I am left with nothing but the demo version and $60.00 less in my bank account. I submitted a ticket to support, and lo and behold, no answer. Does anyone have any idea what the problem is and what I can do about it?

Here is my support ticket number just in case someone from the developer actually views this post.

Please Help; I wanna play my game

First, this error is NOT generated by the game; the game might be tripping it, but its not generating it. Second, google is your friend.

Start here http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330137. And then try https://productforums.google.com/forum/#!topic/chrome/RA0VGBvlbUM.

there are also youtube videos and a number of links to help.

if tiamat is right then its a registry issue... and the windows registry is probably the most miserable thing in the world when it comes to trying to fix (the hell does your screensaver and sample photos library have to do with drive ID's? apparently quite a bit in the world of bill gates XD)

I do have a removable disk, but it isn't the directory which appears. That directory doesn't exist on my computer.

thanks for the links. So far, I haven't found anything helpful. What a drag.

Forget the directory, have you tried putting a disk to see if it changes the error or it tries to install to it?

actually if you have a removable disk (USB flash drive, external HDD) plugged into the computer then you should remove it and see if that fixes it.

that's odd that message your getting Please insert a disk into drive/Device/Harddisk4/DR4."
it looks like its looking for a device by that name?
on a computer with a windows based operating system most hardisks are assigned a single drive letter c: g: for example
I would use disk management in windows to check this is the case if not rename it
you probably know that but I have no idea how computer literate /competent you are so please don't be offended only trying to help.

they get assigned letters but they can still be referred to by their drive number, if you go into your disk management you will be able to see that your C:\ drive is disk 0. or drive/device/harddisk0\DR0
also, you can assign disk letters from disk management, as long as its not A:\ B:\ or C:\
you can't change drive numbers (like disk x, or harddisk#\DR#) ...or atleast i believe its very ill-advised.

right i have an answer very competent,
and you don't have a device by that name on your system bizzare
I would disable all hardisks in dev manager except local disk c: an kill antivirus an firewall tempoarilly

and of course after a reboot a complete re reinstallation from a fresh download

as it seems like a registry v up i would delete all existing ed folders if any left after uninstallation including the user apps one don't want the error to be saved before a fresh install

or even better a complete roll back(system restore point)
before u purchased before trying the above
read mail above about screensaver? do people still use them with modern monitors as there is no need.

No offense taken. I'm only mildly computer literate :-D I appreciate any suggestions anyone has.

As it seems like a registry v up i would delete all existing ELITE DANGEROUS folders if any left after uninstallation including the user apps one don't want the error, were ever it may be hiding to be saved as the new install may not overwrite it.....

and of course after a reboot with just local disk c: enabled do a complete re reinstallation from a fresh download or even better, do a complete system roll back(from an earlier system restore point) before u purchased the game
before trying the above as that will obviously eliminate any chance of reg error or whatever from reoccurring

N.B MAKE SURE YOU LOG OUT OF THE LAUNCHER BEFORE DOING THE ABOVE(because shutting it down is not the same as a an actual log out of the server)

And The Winner Is!!!!!

You are correct in that there is no disk to supply to you. The issue is down to your computer not being able to find a disk drive it is expecting (that name is an internal one that you won't see elsewhere) and this can be down to your screensaver believe it or not. If you have used a CD for photos and set those photos as your screensaver it can cause this issue in some installers. First try changing your screensaver by right-clicking your desktop, selecting Personalise and then changing the screensaver on the bottom right and see if it fixes it.

If that doesn't work you may try to change the photo screensaver path in your registry if it exists.

Click Start, type regedit in the search box, and then press enter.

Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows Photo Gallery\Slideshow\Screensaver

If screensaver is mentioned there in the settings, then on the right hand side you will see "FolderPath". The entry for folderpath should be C:\Users\Public\Pictures\Sample Pictures\ and if not change it to this. Reboot and that should fix it but let me know if not. Posts tend to vanish off to page 10 pretty quickly so drop me a PM if you need to.

Support are absolutely swamped at the moment unfortunately due to a combination of things and the recent holidays but they are getting more staff in to deal with the backlog (which they couldn't do over the holidays). They are making progress getting response times back to what they were before xmas though.

Tiamat....
The only change I made was to my screen saver. After a reboot I was able to install the game and start playing. Seriously.
How is that though?! Either way if anyone else receives the error message I was getting, let it be known that changing your screen saver (in my case I just disabled it all together) seems to solve the problem. I did not change the directory path for the screen saver, just set it to "none". Reboot, and wah lah. Thanks to everyone for the help. My ED name is Commander John 3:16, be nice if you come across me, I'm still new :)
Thanks again all. Awesome support from the community on this one.

Have you tried navigating to where the launcher is installed and creating a folder in there, called "product" or "products" I forget which, but this forces the install into the launcher directory. so it would be something like ..\EDLaunch\Products

I just wanted to say I've got the same exact issue, and same exact error code. I don't use a screensaver and it's currently set to none. This sucks. I'm able to run the combat demo just fine, why not the full game??

Oh, is the game seriously _still_ installing itself into the user profile?
I made my Products folder into the launcher folder in the early beta and it's been there ever since then, I had no idea that this is still an issue :O
Did they forgot to add the option into the installer? :/

Hmm, are you logged in as an admin?
Is there enough space on the drive where the windows user profile is? (usually C) (currently the game seems to take up 3,51GB of disk space)
Was the launcher/combat demo installed using your user account?
Is it a shared computer? Is there some sort of quota limit set at how much you can have in your user profile?
It could be that the launcher is trying to write somewhere where it does not have a permit to write.. Or not enough space.

I'd try installing the launcher somewhere completely different than the default location, then create the Products -folder in it (to the folder with EDLaunch.exe (if it seriously is not there already)), and then run the installer.
