I tested Gear VR, is rift or vive better?

What really destroyed the immersion for me was that using a gear vr was looking through a tube. You could see the black edge of the lenses inside and also some other parts of the set. Field of view was really limited because of that.

Now the question. Is thE real deal Rift or Vive better in that aspect or does it also give the effect of looking through a tube with limited FoV?

Pretty much the same. The Vive (IMO) has a slightly bigger FOV than the Oculus Rift.

But if you are trying to avoid that scuba-dive mask effect you will be waiting a few years yet. The biggest change from the Gear VR to the full Oculus Rift or Vive is positional tracking. The device can detect you moving your head in any direction including leaning forward and backward. You can kneel down, jump, lean into objects. Basically they feel far more immersive than the Gear VR. The Vive takes this one step further as it comes with multiple base stations for its tracking capability and therefore provides room-scale VR.

The only negative compared to Gear is the tethering. You have a wire from the headset connected to your PC at all times.

Then flying through space even on my 147" wall screen, when I look to my left I see my music rack and table, a window and a computer. To my right a couch, a wall with pictures and a chair, up I see the ceiling and light and - well you get the drift.

The Rift and Vive are more alike than different. Slopey has a thread discussing them (he has both).

If you want to walk around, get a Vive. For seated experience a Rift. Rift beats the Vive on E: D at the moment, but Frontier is working on it. My non-Elite VR is phenominal fun and great quality.

If stuck, get both. :D

Heehee you made me think;
"You are flying through space. It is dark. You might be eaten by a grue."

/age :D

Personally hoping FD get the Vive issues sorted out (and Valve/HTC get a ASyncTimeWarp equivalent function). Then most will be happy.

I've had a Rift for a few days now and played ED for most of it:rolleyes:
I do notice the black edges of the lenses when playing, but ED is the one game I notice it least. Partially because a lot of the game is black anyway so you don't really notice where the screen stops and the HMD edge begins, but mostly because I'm having so much damn fun.:D
I'm either fighting for my (ships) life and been amazed by the improvement of having a HMD, or in the quieter times I'm looking around my Clipper's cabin thinking %$^# me I'm in a spaceship!!;)

Whether you choose Rift or Vive, ED is greatly enhanced in VR.

I've only tried the Vive so far but have a Rift on order. However personally I only really notice the edges of the headset when I first put it on or during loading screens etc. Once there is something there to capture my attention I find I'm too immersed to notice all the stuff like the edges and SDE etc.
