Well Suppose if ....
You want an Auto Pilot that can supercruise from Star to destination and then stop in the safe to disengage?
Make it a module with some mass, and know it will submit to any interdictions.
You Want an Auto Pilot that will jump an planned route star to star to star, and will try to scoop if it can?
Make it a Module with some mass
With the Docking Computer as well, then there is three internal slots already gone.
If you're a trader you have to give up cargo space
If you're an explorer you are adding mass.
Choice and consequence.
Hmm it would be really useful while exploring so you can check the system map and search the galaxy map while the ship auto stops at the selected target.
Giving up mass for it is a trade-off, doesn't make sense if it weighs a ton or more.
I wish I could rip out the 64t useless 8D sensor suite. I have it powered off anyway. What kind of sensors weigh 64t, 8 times as much as my thrusters!
.
A navigation computer would be more useful than an auto star hopping component.
Let me construct my own route in the galaxy map instead of 1 star at a time or whatever the planner thinks best.
.
I would like to be more on the reviewing and planning side while exploring, less in the mundane routine of stopping in time while keeping the ship pointed at a dot.
Planning optimal routes, select what stars to visit, select what planets to go to in a system in what order. Watch it all unfold while studying the results.
Maybe that's just me. I loved to tinker for hours with the AI routines in FF12, then move my team in for a fight and analyze how to improve their behaviour / adjust it for different occasions.
Never manually interfering. Oh well, there's ksp for that.
