[IC] A Founder's Progress

I'm pretty much ready to go. My Asp, the Void Insurance, is docked at Galileo. Fortunately I've finally managed get back to being regarded as 'neutral' by the Federation. It's only a little thing but hey it means something to me. In some ways it may not be the best time to go. Interesting things are starting to happen, but then again these things may take time to develop. Anyway Sag A is kind of an itch I need to scratch, especially with the Buckyballers getting involved. I'm not after the record as I don't think I could concentrate long enough.
.
I could have gone yesterday or the day before. but I had some personal issues to resolve. Anyway according to the records yesterday was my birthday so it didn't seem to be the right day to be heading out away from most of humanity. I haven't decided when I'm starting, maybe later today or tomorrow, certainly in the next few days. My ship is now rigged out for the journey. ADS and DSS to do the science and earn me money. A huge fuel scoop replacing the largest cargo bay and a couple of auto-maintenance units. Pretty much everything except the FSD stripped down to the bare minimum. She can jump over 35ly at a time, heck if I stripped off the heat sinks she might hit 36ly. I've taken a risk by using a smaller fuel tank, but heading to towards the galactic core means more stars, I'll just have to be careful.

It's been a long time since I last posted. I was hugely delayed at Galileo, ran into a bureaucratic nightmare with the authorities. Something about needing an import licence for the waters of Shinrata that I delivered. Anyway it's all resolved now and I'm well on my way. I kind of forgot about the race aspect of the Buckyball event and did a lot of scanning which has slowed me down considerably. The bad news is that the mystery illness is back and I'm suffering severe fatigue. This has led to several minor incidents and one not so minor. Hull is down to around 80% and I've used three quarters of my AMFU's have been used up patching things up. Just to make things even worse. I've noticed some small cracks in the canopy. I'm a long way from anywhere but I guess I've got to keeping pushing onwards.
On a side note, I switched back to the 32 tonne tank for peace of mind. I'm glad I did because I hit a few rough patches were I don't think the smaller tank would have been enough.

Finally made it, heck I nearly ended up in Sag A as I got very close. The gravitational lensing effect is mesmerising. If you do a fast fly by you see stars appear to spin around the event horizon. It's kind of freaky, but it was worth the journey. Now it's time for the long slog home. I probably won't take exactly the same route. Out here there are so many stars it hardly matters. It seems that the auto-repair fixed something I didn't realise I had. I can now get Galnet even out here! I can't say that I've really missed civilisation, most of the petty squabbles seem pretty meaningless out here, but it was a shock to hear about the death of the Fed president and vice president. Not that I was much of a fan, but she seemed marginally better than that warmonger they just voted in. It seems that Sirius Corp are doing another of those exploration data requests. Not sure what the rewards are but it seems like the timing might work out for me.

Current position heading for the edge of the galactic core on the way home. I'm a long way from civilisation still but I'm glad to be getting clear of the core. Initially the multitude of stars is a spectacle, but many explorers will tell you that you'll soon grow weary of it. The sheer number of stars can slow your nav comp terribly and after a while the constant glow gets to you. It's like the light pollution you get in some cities only much worse. My ship has taken a battering, mostly my fault, and the cracks in the canopy have got worse. I have to spend so much time keeping the ship functional that I can only do short bursts of jumps in a day. I'll forgo a lot of detailed scans just to make progress. If I'm lucky I still might meet the deadline for this Sirius thing. I'm pushing hard to get home. I can hardly wait for a proper cold beer and a real meal, oh and some fresh clothes too. In some ways it's a wrench passing through systems with scanning them but I'm reminded of the last verse of the Robert Frost poem 'Stopping by woods on a snowy evening'
.
'The woods are lovely, dark, and deep.
But I have promises to keep,
And miles to go before I sleep,
And miles to go before I sleep'

Made it back to civilisation. The last 1000 light years were probably the most dangerous. Ignoring the threat of potential psychos out there, I did hit a bad patch of unscoopables but a slight change of course saved me from having to call out the Fuel Rats. I made quite a healthy profit on the trip. That is a first, finishing a Buckyball event with more credits than I start with. It took over an hour to download the data. Apparently my exploration rank is now up to Ranger, maybe reaching Elite isn't so far away. Highlights of the trip were some of the incredible sights and finding some earth like worlds. I think I got first discovery credits on 7 or 8 ELW's. I even found one with a ring system.
.
I'm not sure what I'm going to do next. I'll probably hang around the station to wait for the bonus from Sirius Corp for the data and maybe I'll retrieve my Clipper from Nu and bring it home to be upgraded. I hear that Bucky is planning another race soon, so maybe I won't head out into the black for a while.

Reports of my death are greatly exaggerated to misquote an ancient Earth writer. While it's true that I've managed to wreck two clippers since the last time I posted, I'm still very much alive. Last time I mentioned Bucky was planning another race. Unfortunately this has been postponed indefinitely. The details are pretty hazy and all sorts of rumours were going around. One suggested that he'd been caught in a compromising position with some high profile figure like one of the faction leaders. Others say that all the stations involved in previous Buckyball runs have brought a class action against him for all the damage that Buckyballers are alleged to have done. Whatever the truth of the matter, he's had to keep a very low profile for now.
.
Anyway back to me. Initially I was a little underwhelmed by the Clipper. I guess it's the old thing of the stock version being a shadow of the fully upgraded version, but my feelings were that I liked the Clipper but didn't love it. Of course upgrading is an expensive business but the price of A6 modules came as something of a shock. I haven't got her fully upgraded yet but I'm starting to see what all the other Clipper pilots love about it.
.
This all happened around the time of the initial outbreak of the Cerberus virus in BD whatever (don't you just hate the star catalogue names). I started shipping meds from Jameson Memorial out to the plague zone. That's when I lost the first Clipper. Maybe I was tired and made a mistake, but I had my ship shot from under me by security at Jameson. Their excuse was that I hadn't followed correct decontamination and quarantine procedures. I think it may have had more to do with Kiera Stanton. She works for station security at Jameson and we've been having a kind of on/off relationship. We'd had a fight the night before and maybe she was still a little mad at me. At least the ship was empty so I only had to pay the insurance excess. This put me out of action for a few days, but luckily the guys I was shipping meds for, paid my bonus straight into my account. Usually you have to turn up in person for a biometric scan before they they'll pay out. Everyone had thought that we'd contained the outbreak and people went back to other things.
.
It was a short while later that the Fed navy black ops guys turned up. I hadn't seen them in a long time and thought they had forgotten about me. There they were, now with a fancy new name 'Federal Navy Auxiliary', but the same old patter. They'd promote me to ensign if I killed this guy for them. They even offered a decent payout. I didn't have any qualms about it. The target was no innocent, he was a regular bad guy. What they didn't tell me was that the target was flying an Anaconda. I'd kind of expected someone in a Clipper or Dropship. My ship wasn't really fitted out for combat and I realised I was out of my depth. I got too close and he suddenly pitched up and rammed my ship. That's where I lost the second clipper. I'd failed and it hurt. I figured I wouldn't be hearing from the FNA for a while so I went trading to recoup my losses.
.
Just when I thought I'd found a potential trade run the news came that the Cerberus virus had broken out in 3 systems. I felt I had to help and headed to Eleu. The situation was worse than anyone had realised. Maybe the majority of people were too involved in power politics to notice the crisis. The response from independent pilots was pitiful. The number who responded to the appeal was considerably fewer than the number of people that have visited Sag A. Even with the small number of commanders responding we found that the supply of meds from nearby systems was drying up. I was back to making long hauls carrying meds from Jameson and taking Eleu thermals and wine on the return run. I was making a decent profit. Maybe you could accuse me of profiteering but I'd point out that I wasn't setting the market price and more importantly at least I was there doing something. In the midst of all that suffering and chaos the FNA turned up again. They were offering me another chance to make Ensign. A different job, something more suited to my talents, a simple bit of illegal salvage. Apparently a shipment of experimental chemicals had come to grief in a neighbouring system and they wanted me to recover it. It's funny I hadn't done any of that kind of work for months, I'd been trying to go straight and yet they considered me the 'go to guy'. Of course I accepted the offer but I was worried that I was being set up. By that time I'd already realised that the situation in Eleu was hopeless. Finding the wreckage wasn't difficult, but when I arrived I found I had company. A system authority ship and a couple of bounty hunters were nosing around debris field. They scanned me and found I was clean. Eventually they got bored and moved on, allowing me to secure the cargo. So now I'm an Ensign with the Feds and a Baron with the Imps.
.
We failed to stop the virus in any of the systems so they were forced to lock down under quarantine. Things were going from bad to worse, another 6 systems had become infected. We knew that there wasn't enough of us to have any hope of saving all the systems. We all agreed to concentrate our efforts on saving one system

As I was saying the situation was very grim. I'd bugged out of Eleu a few hours before the quarantine was imposed but I knew some commanders had second ships that they couldn't use due to the lockdown. I think that was when our morale was at it's lowest ebb. The task seemed hopeless. We'd failed to save 3 systems and now we were faced with double that number. That's when we chose Bast. I know that some commanders have put about the story that we decided to help Bast because of a news vid with a little girl. It's a nice story, very sentimental, I'm sure that when they make a holo about what happened they'll include it. As far as I know it's just a myth. The truth is that in one of the most extreme acts of triage ever carried out we realised that at best we could only save one system, and all the factors, like the number of nearby systems with a ready supply of meds and distance to the station, pointed to Bast. It wasn't an easy decision to more or less abandon the other systems to their fate
.
Even then it seemed a daunting task. It didn't help that pirates had started targeting the aid runs. Just as we were about to despair, we had an influx of fresh pilots. That more than doubled our numbers and gave us real hope. One thing we hadn't considered was the profitability of the market. To some extent it didn't matter, this was a humanitarian mission after all, but many of us were losing money with each delivery. Against all the odds we succeeded. This was the breakthrough that everyone was waiting for. Researchers at Hart Station believed that they had found a cure. Our actions had given them that chance. Some people hailed us pilots as the 'Heroes of Bast'. I think the medical teams that we helped are more deserving of that title but if people insist Developing the cure was going to require a huge supply if a rare type of tea from Heike. Since it was going to a long run with severe restriction on how much we could carry I swapped my ships back to my Asp. In another stroke of good fortune some of the pirates switched over to our side and helped protect the transports.
.
It seems that we may have beaten the virus, at least for now. What I found most disappointing and disturbing was the complete absence of any official response. Nothing from the Federation or the Alliance, both of which had interests in the affected systems. I can just about excuse the Empire as it was not close to any Imperial systems and they were distracted by build up to the Imperial wedding. Still it's kind of depressing that most people ignored the appeals for help. They just dismissed it as someone else's problem, something happening a long way away and of no interest to them. The thing is, that if this small rag tag band of independent commanders hadn't stepped up to the plate the virus would have spread and may become impossible to control.
.
It was sad to hear about the Emperor getting murdered at his wedding. I was never a huge fan of the Empire, but the old guy didn't deserve that. It has also ramped up the tensions between the Imperial factions. It was notable than during the build up to the wedding, the presence of the Emperor had calmed things down . I have a bad feeling about the future of the Empire, fortunately it's not my problem.

It's been a while and I've been quite busy. My trader rating is now up to broker and my combat ranking is up to expert. I wasn't really chasing the ranks, they just kind of happened. I lost two ship since I last posted. Luckily both times it was the Asp so the insurance wasn't so bad. The first time was pirate action. Well I say pirate, it had nothing to do with piracy. I was hauling scrap to Hutton Orbital at the time when this psycho in a Fer de Lance shoots my ship from under me without a word. The second one was quite embarrassing. I was trying to dock with an outpost when an electrical fault deployed my weapons and fired at the outpost. This set off the automated defences and I couldn't get away in time. The people on the outpost were quite nice about it though.

The last few weeks have been eventful. I guess I should first explain why I was hauling scrap out to Hutton Orbital. They were desperate for scrap for their big project. Some marketing guru has turned an item of folk art into a highly desirable object. Essentially it's just a mug made from scrap. I'll admit that it's a good mug and keeps drinks hot longer than you might expect but people are making all sorts of wild claims about 'magical' properties. All I know is that people will pay silly money for them and I got one for free just because I sourced some scrap for them.

Once that project finished I moved on to another one. Scientists on Newholm station in the Sothis system had created something they call crystalline gold, before they could get into full production they needed a large supply of ordinary gold. It sounded like a simple haulage job but in practice Sothis is pretty remote. The nearest supplies of gold were over 300 ly away. I guess I'm used to long journeys but there is a difference between exploration and long distance hauling. The is a bad patch you have to get through and I had a few close calls with fuel. Fortunately I never did run out of fuel, but one time I only just got away with it. I'd pushed it that bit further than was safe, luckily there was a suitable star just in range. The fuel scoop started to kick in as I got the 'Main fuel tank drained' warning. I've never been more relieved.

While I was down there I got drawn back into smuggling. I guess the long hauls made the opportunity to make some quick credits so tempting. There's a lucrative little trade circuit down there going between Newholm Station and an outpost in the same system along with a station in a neighbouring system. It wouldn't surprise me if it's the same few tonnes of narcotics and battle weapons that keeps getting moved between the stations. It did cost me another insurance payout though. Some vigilante in a Ferdy wrote off my Asp. It was around then I figured I should try using a bigger ship for legit trading. I did consider picking up my Clipper from Jameson but decided it was too thirsty and too far away for that job. So I picked up a cheap T7 instead. I don't know if that ship was a Friday afternoon lemon or if it was just the way T7s are, I really didn't enjoy flying it. I guess it didn't help matters that I couldn't fully upgrade it. My take on the T7 was that it was sluggish, ponderous and left me feeling very vulnerable. It was also extremely prone to overheating. I was glad to get rid of it and get back to my Asp as soon as the job had finished.

Part of my reward was meant to be the option to buy some crystalline gold at a reduced price. Unfortunately they ran into production problems. To keep myself busy I bought an Adder so I could do some jobs that the T7 couldn't. Being unable to get a decent FSD limited my options. I got roped into helping anti-piracy patrols at the Nav beacon. I was doing ok until I got ambushed by a wing of Eagles It didn't go well. Luckily my escape pod was picked up by a Systems Authority Anaconda. At least my efforts weren't in vain. The guys from Sirius Corp were sufficiently happy with my efforts that they gave me a Sirius permit. I took this as a sign to head back to civilization. Nice as Newholm station is, it's still under construction and they haven't spun it up yet.

Having got back I managed to get into trouble. I got caught hauling narcotics. Some stupid pirate brought the heat with him and so I ended up with a hefty fine. It was around then that I decide to take a little break back on the Founders World. .When you start getting snarky comments from the cops when they scan you along the lines of 'you're clean this time' , it really is time to lay low. At least it gave me a chance to straighten things out with Kiera.

Has it really been nearly 3 montha since I last posted? And I hadn't even got up to date last time. Actually it must be over year since I started my adventures even if I hadn't been recording them at the start. Anyway back to what happened. It seems that my timing was extremely bad.Shortly after I left Sothis they temporarily lifted the allocation restrictions on crystalline gold and also hosted a large number of very lucrative smuggling contracts. I missed out on the opportunity to make a fortune but I wasn't worried. I was honouring an agreement to provide some logistical support for the Hutton Truckers before getting back to Kiera.

I'm so glad I took the time out to get things back on track with Kiera. I guess trust was one of the big issues. I know that pilots have a reputation for having a partner in every starport , but we aren't all like that. We spent a few days in a quiet coastal resort on Founders World. Apparently it's close to where Kiera grew up. There was something vaguely familiar about the place, maybe I knew it from my life before? But that raises more questions than it answers. There's no point in dwelling on all the things I can't remember, I have to look to the future. I hope that Kiera will be a big part of it.

With Kiera having to go back to work I drifted back into trading and smuggling. One thing that anyone who has worked around spaceports will tell you is that very little happens without someone noticing. I was starting to attract a lot of unwelcome attention. The pirates were less of a problem than the authorities. I recall one smuggling trip to an outpost, the cops were on to me as soon as I'd jumped into the system. It was lucky that I was listening in on the police channel. I dropped out of supercruise and re-entered it just as the cops arrived. Because they hadn't interdicted me it didn't count as'refusing to stop' so they didn't start hot pursuit. It bought me just enough time to reach the outpost and unload. The cargo had barely been stowed in the station when the cops scanned me. That was a little too close for comfort.

The slave trade is something I've never been entirely comfortable with. I usually avoid it despite it being one of the most lucrative parts of commerce. Back when I started out I even took a couple of missions to free slaves. They were supposed to help my reputation with a local faction but things didn't turn out that way. I'm not even sure those slaves were freed.

I can't even claim the moral high ground of never having profited from slaves. There was an incident in an anarchy shortly afterwards. I'd gone there to source some Battle Weapons for one of the navies, I guess they didn't want them to be traceable. Anyway after I'd made the deal I met some oneelse in the bar. She was strikingly attractive and obviously wealthy. She was offering to pay double the galactic average to any enterprising trader that would supply her 10 tonnes of slaves. She hinted that there may be other non financial rewards too. As a lonely, newbie, down on his luck commander, the combination of lust and easy money was enough to stifle any qualms I had. Let's be honest if she'd only been after slaves, she'd have checked the market. I'll admit it's not something I'm proud of, but it seems like a lifetime ago.

Aside from the thing with Aisling's Angels I'd kept out of the trade until shortly before Arissa's coronation. Apparently she wanted slaves as a gift either Imperial or ordinary it didn't matter. Since I don't hold any allegiance to any of the powers, I could have safely ignored it. But the promise of generous rewards piqued my interest. I agonised overwhat to do. It certainly wasn't a black and white issue. What swayed it for me was that their prospects seemed much better if I took them to Achenar . Surely it's better to be trained to be an Imperial slave with all the safeguards and chance of eventual release than remain aslave and face a short life working in the mines, factories or fields? I loaded up my Asp. Unfortunately I was interdicted in the Achenar system by a pair of pirates using hatchbreakers. I lost a quarter of my load. I feel guilty about the ones I lost. I let them down, instead of improving their prospects I probably made things worse for them.

With a heavy heart I picked up my reward and was astonished at how generous it was. That helped lift my mood. There was an Empire wide discount on Imperial ships in celebration of the Coronation. I picked up a Courier and another Clipper. It seemed much more convenient to have ships close to where they might be needed.

Talking of the Coronation. I took Kiera to see it. It's quite a thing for non Imperial citizen to even be allowed in Capitol at the best of times, but I guess being a 'respected ally' and a baron cuts some ice with officialdom. Obviously we weren't invited to the ceremony, we were just part of the crowd lining the main boulevard. I'll admit that people watching the holo-vids at home probably saw more than we did, but they wouldn't have felt the atmosphere. It was something special which we will never forget.

Kiera has been pushing me to update this journal. I guess she has a point, because my last entry was a long way from getting up to date, and even in the short time since then, so many things have happened. After the coronation we visited one of the regular ship shows in Beta somewhere (sorry somethings are a little hazy). There were several new ships from the major manufacturers which we got to see and even test fly some of them. I was most impressed by Gutamaya's new Imperial Cutter. It handles surprisingly well for such a large ship. Sadly it's currently beyond my finances and Imperial rank, but something to aim for. I also enjoyed the Viper Mk IV which I found to be a thoroughly capable 'small' ship. It's up there with the Cobra Mk III though I think the Cobra just edges it. Somehow I ended up with a free one, though I'm not sure why. It may have been a raffle prize or I might have got it for endorsing it. I guess having a Founder say nice things about your product is good advertising.

Seeing the Scarab SRVs at the show has inspired me to upgrade my pilot licence to add planetary landing rating. So far I've only got the part A certification which allows me to land on planets without atmosphere or volcanism. The B and C certificates require learning an awful lot of theory about things like meteorology and exo-biological hazards. I think that's going to take quite a while.

After the show I dropped Kiera back at Jameson Memorial and was drawn into the next big project. People wanted to build a station in a nebula. In practice the station was built in an Alliance system and was 'jumped 'to it's destination. I spent several weeks hauling materials and even doing some mining. Using collector limpets makes it so much easier.

During that time I also took a few bounty hunting jobs on the side. They all seemed to be 'take out x number of pirates in system y'. I was lucky enough to find several in the same system so a single kill would count for several different jobs. I did unfortunately have to make an insurance claim after my greed for the bounty over rode my tactical instincts.

I took some time to practice planetary landing and using an SRV. It takes a bit of getting used to. I had a couple of serious accidents. One time I had the throttle jam on an SRV, it didn't stop until it broke. And then there was the incident where I lost my Clipper while trying to make adelivery to a surface station. I'd slightly misjudged my approach and hit a Goliath skimmer. This set off the station defences and I was shot down, Because of those incidents I have a healthy appreciation of the rescue services and help them out whenever I can.

The newly built station was named Obsidian Orbital after one of the major sponsors and deployed to Maia. I had hoped to spend the so called 'holiday season 'with Kiera but apparently things were so busy a Jameson Memorial thatshe couldn't get any time off. Being left at a loose end I noticed an appeal for pilots to bring in supplies of a specific rare good. I don't always take much notice of these things but this one was different. Clauss Incorporated wanted Special Gifts. It was a nice rare goods run which is just what I needed. I even got to meet the CEO Nicholas St Clauss. He seemed a lot friendlier than most of the business types I've met.

Shortly after that appeal ended there was another on to bring Anduliga fireworks to Cherets. Seeing as I was still in my Asp it seemed worthwhile to helpout. It was around then that I got the word that Bucky was back and he had a new Buckyball race. This was to be across the bubble and out to the new station. In an extra twist it wouldn't just be against the clock, there would be a couple of live races. I took my Asp the 'Void Insurance' out to the first live race. She wasn't really in racing trim, so I knew I wasn't going to do that well, but sometimes it's the taking part that counts. It was quite the spectacle to see 20 ships race out of a station. It was quite pleasing to see Obsidian Orbital in all it's glory , but I couldn't hang around for long as the firework thing was still ongoing. As I didn't want the whole journey to be a waste I looked to see if there were any jobs. I was approached by a representative of the Anthill Mob. He was a short, stocky tough looking guy. Looked like he was from some high G world. He said that his boss, Miss Pittstop , needed a courier to carry some data and make a few deliveries back to the bubble. It seemed like a good deal. As I was heading back to my ship I was stopped by a thin weasely looking man. He said he was a journalist and that he had uncovered a big story. He needed someone to take it back to his editor. I agreed to help him.

I thought that the journey back would be uneventful but hadn't reckoned on the pirates.I figured that they must either be rivals of the Anthill Mob or they wanted to prevent the story getting out. I didn't really care as I managed to evade them.

As the fireworks thing finished, I thought I'd have another crack at the race so I made some adjustments to my ship to make it more competitive. I managed to set a much more respectable time though I was still nowhere near the fastest. During my trips to and from Obsidian Orbital I noticed several convoys of ships in uninhabited systems. I don't know what they were doing but they reminded my of the rumours about secret convoys associated with the unknown artifacts.

Back in civilisation itseemed that both the Imperial and Federal navies had been aware of some of my activities and were offering promotions so in the space of a couple of days I had become a Viscount and a Lieutenant. The funny thing is that a lot of the work I was doing for them was causing unrest in their own factions.

Working for the Imperials cost me another insurance claim. They had heard rumours that a small planetary outpost was being used by terrorists. They asked me to investigate. The rumours proved to be correct but the terrorists spotted me and we got into a firefight. I should have run but I didn't want to risk them slipping away. They shot me down quite easily as my ship wasn't really configured for combat. I was relieved to be rescued by Imperial Special Forces.

Kiera came to visit me as I recuperated. She was angry with me for being so stupidly reckless. I had to admit that she had a point. In some ways it only deepened our relationship. She was only angry because she cared. To make things up to her, I agreed to take her for a trip. She was keen to visit a nebula as she wanted to see one up close and hadn't ever left the bubble before.

We ruled out the Pleiades. It's the closest nebula but lots of weird stuff has started happening around there with the discovery of the so called 'barnacles' and more unknown artifacts. There were also rumours of a bunch of eco-terrorists attacking anyone in the area. As we discussed the options an ancient song called 'Hotel California' was playing on the station radio. It was both strange and somehow beautiful. We both looked at each other and the galaxy map and in unison said California Nebula.

I watched her closely as we left the bubble. Some people get freaked out if they get more than a few light years from civilisation. The enormity of the galaxyand their own insignificance hits them hard. Fortunately Kiera's not one of them. In one system we saw ringed ice planet and landed therejust because it looked nice. The California Nebula didn't disappoint, but it was kind of a touristy spot. Ask any serious explorer and they'll say it's just on the doorstep. Kiera was eager to go further out. The strange blue colour of the Veil Nebula West seemed to be an obvious destination to investigate. I can't say I was expecting to find much, as most of the journey would be within a 1000 light yearsof Sol. I guess we must have been on a route less taken because wefound dozens of uncharted systems on the way.

There's still a kind of a buzz from being the first person to visit a system although we found evidence that this wasn't always the case. We picked up several occupied escape pods from some crash sites. One thing I learned from the rescue services is that you never try to open them, that's something best left to a hospital. The trip had taken longer than we had expected because of all the extra survey work. Kiera had to get back so we headed back to the bubble. I decided to stop at 17 Draconis as a safe place to sell the data and offload everything we had salvaged. It was there that I met a rep from the FNA. Just a couple of little jobs they said. Yeah right, smuggling landmines and narcotics to a couple of stations in the bubble, nice pay out if it all went to plan but nothing if I got scanned. I discussed it with Kiera.

We've had our arguments about my smuggling. Kiera tends to see things more black and white than I do. I guess it comes with her working for security. I was surprised when she agreed to let me try on condition we had a wager on the result. If I failed I would have to take her to dinner at the smartest restaurant on Founders World, if I succeeded we would have dinner at her place . I guess it wasn't her jurisdiction and perhaps she wanted to learn some of my techniques, or maybe she just didn't believe I could pull it off as my ship wasn't ideally set up for smuggling. The authorities were on to us from the first jump and so were some pirates. I managed to lose them by skimming close to the star causing my pursuers to drop out of supercruise. The next few jumps were fine but then they started to catch up. Halfway home and the law interdicted me, just as things started to look bad, a pirate dropped from supercruise to try and rob me. In the confusion the cops and pirates started fighting and I slipped away to safety. At last I was at the destination with only the station patrols to beat. I was lined up with the slot when I got the 'scan detected' warning. I hit boost and was lucky. Kiera swore as I collected my 4 million credit payment, but I could see from her smile that a cosy night in would be much more fun than dinner at some stuffy restaurant.

You would think that by now I'd be used to being on my own on my ship. I guess it never really bothered my until recently, but the trip with Kiera changed things. Sometimes it's just nice to share experiences with someone, but then again there are some things you don't want to put them through. It's the empty chair that's done it. Seeing the empty chair reminds me that she's not here. She's probably asleep right now, I know she's on the early shift this week. I've told her that I'd support her if she wanted to give up work, but she values her independence too much. That's one of the things I like about her.

All too soon I was off on my own adventures. I visited 17 Draconis a couple more times. They needed some supplies and had a few other jobs for me. Apparently I managed to impress the guys from the FNA sufficiently that they gave me another promotion Lt. Commander this time. They said it would change things, some how I doubt it but it was a nice excuse for a celebration. All I'll say is that my FNA contacts know how to party hard. I'd barely recovered from the hangover when I got a call from the Hutton Truckers. I wouldn't really describe myself as a Hutton Trucker, more of an associate or affiliate, but we have a good working relationship. Apparently another group, the Paladin Consortium, were calling in a favour. The Paladins had provided security for some of the Truckers convoys and now needed some logistical help. They were dealing with a large number of people rescued from slavery. Processing so many people for resettlement and rehabilitation had run into difficulties and a humanitarian crisis was brewing. They urgently needed water purifiers. I switched from my Asp to my trade rigged Clipper. The appeal was going well but then I was attacked. I don't know who the culprits were but it was a professional hit. I barely had time to use the escape pod. This shook me up a little.

It was obvious that the appeal would be successful so I took a few side jobs. One of these was helping an anti-slavery group. They'd uncovered a secret market and needed someone to pose as a buyer. I was happy to help out and found it quite satisfying. I also took on some anti-piracy work. It seems that my combat rating has now risen to Master. As the appeal ended everyone picked up their bonus. We were meant to get a 30% discount for outfitting but there wasn't much available that I wanted. However someone made a mistake and also applied the discount to the shipyard as well. It was several hours before they noticed and corrected things. In that time I was able to purchase a Python and a Federal Dropship for a bargain price. I'd been thinking about getting a Python for a while. The discount just sealed the deal. The Dropship is just one of those things that are hard to explain, I guess that the fact that my fictional namesake is supposed to be a dropship pilot meant I couldn't resist buying it.

The Python is a very capable ship but very different from my other ships. I was struggling to properly outfit it as I didn't want the long haul back to Shinrata. My outfitting issue delayed my participation in Princess Aisling's latest venture. Working with Prismatic Imperium she had founded a colony for former slaves. There was an appeal for pilots to bring in slaves so that they could be freed. The financial rewards were quite generous but nothing compared to seeing the joy of all the people that were starting a new life. Over 7 million slaves were liberated and I can proudly say that I helped over 2200 of them. I've heard a lot of Imperials talk about how Imperial slavery is different and people are honoured to be Imperial slaves. Judging by the reactions of the people I transported, all that talk is rubbish.

I'm currently hauling metals for a new station in LHS 3447. Since so many pilots start their careers in that system. It seems like a good idea to improve the facilities. I took a break to send some survey data to Groombridge 34. Some crazy conspiracy theorist has been saying that this year shouldn't be a leap year. He requested survey data to help prove it. He may be crazy but he's rich and generous. I earned a reward of over 9 million in addition to what Universal Cartographics payed.

One slight misfortune is that I picked up a bounty for destroying a bounty hunter in a neighbouring system. I had a contract to take out 38 pirates in that system. It was very slow going as there were hardly any pirates. I think the civil war has made it an unattractive location. I had actually saved that incompetent bounty hunter from one of the few pirates that I had encountered. frankly this bounty hunter was very bad and had taken quite a beating from the encounter. He then managed to destroy his ship by crashing into mine. It's kind of annoying that I've had to leave the system before I could complete the job because of some idiot lacking in situational awareness.

It's good to be home. Well ok it isn't my home, it's Kiera's place. I suppose that technically you could say that I'm homeless. I don't have a permanent place to call my own. I usually live on whatever ship I'm using or stay in a hotel if I have to. The closest thing to a home that I've had in recent times is a room in the Pilots Federation Training Institute that I lived in during my rehabilitation.

I really need a day or two to rest. I don't know how those A-B-A trade jockeys do it all the time. It's so dull just shuttling between two places that you almost welcome a pirate attack to break the monotony. I was taking on a lot of other jobs just to spice things up. Even with that I thought I was losing my mind at one point. I'd just left Wundt Hub in the Brani system when I noticed something strange on the nearby planet. There seemed to be a huge rectangular shadow on the surface. As I got close to the surface it seemed to melt away. I still don't know if it was real or a figment of my imagination.

Seeing Kiera again has lifted my spirits. The look of delight on her face when I surprised her at the end of her shift was something to treasure. Fortunately she has a few days off so we can be together. I know that there are plenty of things I could be doing but none of them seem that important compared with spending time with Kiera

A lot has changed since my last entry. The biggest change for me is that Kiera is with me. We kind of wangled things with Kiera's boss to get her assigned as my personal bodyguard. There have been a few death threats against me and us Founders are something of an endangered species. Apparently there are more tigers in private ownership than there are living Founders. What's the point of being a Founder if you can't pull a few strings now and then?

We decided not to hang around Shinrata for too long just in case Commissioner Vorlok changed her mind and reassigned Kiera to some other job. Fortunately the Feds were offering nice rewards for people supplying materials for their latest battlecruiser. It was a pretty routine job up until we investigated an unidentified signal source.

We dropped out of witchspace into an immense cloud of debris. Judging by some of the fragments it must have been a Cutter. We weren't alone. A six strong rescue wing was also there. It comprised of an Anaconda and five Asps. There was no sign of any survivors. What had happened was a mystery. There were more than 300 people on board that ship, all gone. No bodies, no escape pods, no mayday. Just the automated distress beacon released when the ship was destroyed. All in all it was quite unsettling.

It was time to move on to a new project, the terraforming of Vennik 1. It's an incredible thing to transform a planet. We had an easy job of just bringing in supplies of terrain enrichment systems. Just as we were getting started there was the grim news of a fresh Cerberus outbreak. I felt obliged to help. Anyone who was at Bast will understand. This time we were lucky and managed to get it under control before it could spread. It was with much relief that we returned to the Vennik project. I have to admit to finding the terraforming process quite fascinating. We stayed on for a few days after the contract had finished just to watch the process. It may not have been the most idyllic spot in the galaxy to take a break but it didn't matter. Kiera was with me and we both felt a sense of pride and satisfaction that in our own small way we had helped .

Kiera asked if we could take a trip out into deep space. I agreed as I was starting to feel the call of the void and I also had some unfinished business with a system around 11kly out. PRU AIN MN-R D5-22 may not sound much to you but it's got a nice ringed ELW in it that I discovered. I'd been hurrying from Sag A when I found it I hadn't fully surveyed the system. This seemed like the perfect opportunity to complete the survey, it was also somewhere I had wanted to show Kiera. Amazingly we managed to find an undiscovered ELW relatively close to the bubble on the outbound trip. Unfortunately someone else managed to tag it before we got back though funnily enough it was the only body in that system that they had scanned. Overall the trip was a huge success, but it's slightly disappointing not to be able to land on the ELW. We had to settle for landing on one of it's moons.

It seems like a lifetime since that visit to 'my' ringed ELW. I can barely remember what we did when we returned to the bubble, it was mostly mundane freight jobs with maybe a bit of bounty hunting and salvage thrown in. The most memorable thing was the strange incident or having my Python stolen 3 times in quick succession. We had docked at a planetary base and were enjoying dinner with the base commander when some terrorists stole my ship and started to attack the base. The base's defences proved more than a match and dispatched the ship with alarming efficiency. Somehow the same group managed to hi-jack two of the replacements before the authorities finally dealt with them. It was somewhat embarrassing for all concerned.

Sometime during that period we must have got involved in the project to fuel Jaques Station. Now that old cyborg bartender may be crazy but you can't fault his ambition. He had an idea to jump his station out to Beagle Point to meet the Distant Worlds expedition. We managed to meet him before he embarked on his great trip. I really liked him, he's one of the few people that I felt that I could open up to and not be judged. Kiera's take on it was that me and Jaques were the quintessential outsiders 'The Man without a past' and 'The Man with too much past'. Maybe she has a point.

You've all heard about what happened with 'the big jump'. Jaques ending up around 22 kly from the bubble and the subsequent Colonia initiative. You might also remember the appeals for various goods. We were persuaded to haul some metals out there. It seemed like the ideal opportunity to get back out in the black, show Kiera more of the core and also catch up with Jaques. We set off in a heavily loaded Python, making slow but steady progress. We even found a few ELWs, ammonia worlds and water worlds on the way. Everything seemed to be going well until it happened. We still don't know exactly where or when it happened. One minute we were happily travelling out to Colonia, the next minute we wake up and find that months have elapsed and the ship has taken heat damage and lost some cargo. We limped on to Gagarin Gateway for repairs. It's funny to think that base didn't even exist when we set out. We sold off the cargo to improve the range of the ship and continued on to Jaques. The original purpose of our journey was now irrelevant, we just wanted to get somewhere that might shed some light on what had happened. Seeing as we were more than halfway to Jaques we decided to press on. In hindsight that may not have been the wisest choice.

By the time we reached Colonia we were both feeling quite unwell. I barely managed to dock and then we were both rushed to the isolation unit. Things were touch and go for quite some time. My fever broke after a couple of days and I started to recover but Kiera was still in a bad way. It was the hardest few days of my life watching helplessly as Kiera struggled to fight the infection. Jaque took time out of his busy schedule to visit me and offer comfort and support. There wasn't much that he could do, but I appreciated that he'd made the effort. As Kiera's condition worsened we decided her best hope was to be taken to better facilities on Founders World.

The journey home felt like an eternity despite only taking a few hours. We were in isolation tents in a medevac Anaconda. I was still too weak to fly and Kiera was still in a critical condition. Returning to Jameson Memorial was something of a relief but it was several days before Kiera started to recover.

In the aftermath of the events we were left with a couple of intriguing facts. The first related to the illness. Scientists at Jameson Memorial identified it as a variant of a strain of Tionsola Flu last seen in 2793. The reason it affected me less than Kiera was that my immune system carried antibodies from previous exposure to a similar strain granting me partial immunity. That kind of implies that I was around in 2793 which would make me over 500 years old. That does fit in with me being a Founder and yet it doesn't explain how all the other evidence, including telomeres suggest that at most, I might be in my mid forties. This forces me to think again about my origins.

The second intriguing fact is that analysis of my Python seems to suggest that at some point it reached somewhere more distant than Beagle Point. All of this suggests that we have had an encounter with some alien with superior technology. Whether it is somehow related to the 'flower' ships or not is impossible to say.

In lighter news Kiera met my protégé , Teagan. That's probably overstating things quite a bit to call her my protégé . All I did was pull a few strings to get her enrolled into the Pilots Federation training scheme at Baker's Prospect. Her family had given a lot of support to the 'Heroes of Bast', so I guess it might be considered paying a debt of honour. I'm happy to report that Teagan made the grade and is doing quite well. It was nice to catch up with her parents Mallory and Conner too. I gave Teagan a few tips and we agreed to meet again .

So much has happened in the last few months that it's hard to know where to begin. Ironically most of that has been a relatively quiet time for me and Kiera. We spent quite some time recuperating after the illness. It seems that there are some residual after effects. Nothing for anyone else to worry about as we aren't contagious, we just have to take things a bit easier or risk fatigue.
We've spent a lot of time trawling archives. Recent events in the galaxy have made me revise my stance of ignoring my lost past. Until recently my attitude has been what was in the past should stay there. I was worried that I might discover some uncomfortable truths or provoke whoever wiped my memory. If they are the same people involved in the current conspiracy theories they are most likely too busy to worry about me.

I was somewhat saddened by the death of Lady Kahina Tijani Loren or Salomè as she had taken to calling herself. It seemed so senseless, though her actions in the final weeks did not always seem entirely rational. her supporters claim she sacrificed herself to ensure that the message got out. Perhaps there is something in that, but if she hadn't announced to the galaxy where she was and where she was going, she might still be alive today. Then again there are rumours that she did survive. As things stand I don't think the conspiracy was worth dying for. If you strip the alien threat stuff all that's left is the fact that the 'powers that be' can't be trusted. That's hardly news to any PF pilot.

On a brighter note I managed to reach Elite in exploration. Maybe I cheated a little as I took advantage of a glitch in the Universal Cartography software which counted earning from passenger missions along with exploration data. I passed this tip on to Teagan so she could also take advantage of it. I know we are far from the only people that have benefited from this. Up until that point I hadn't tried the whole passenger transport thing but I found it very enjoyable. Me and Kiera make a great team, she's great at all the 'people' stuff and I make sure they get some of the best views of the sights.
