General / Off-Topic Ice bucket challenge

No is the answer there. Even if someone nominated me, I wouldn't do it.

It makes me think of those annoying chain letters/emails that there used to be, except this time with ice water.

I'm waiting for the one that has people punching themselves repeatedly in the face. I'll start that off by nominating everyone who's done the ice bucket challenge.

No, and I never would. It seems akin to people who think they're making a difference by tweeting some politically correct hastag. A cheap and comfortable way to fool oneself into having a good conscience.

Yes I think that the Rice bucket is more intelligent and constructive that the Ice bucket. Especially with all the problems that the world knows, currently

Very disappointing reaction I have to say.

First of all, it's for a good cause (and there are a few causes to choose from now that other charities have got in on the act, if you don't like ALS/MND).

Secondly, it's fun, raises awareness, and brings people together. This is what social networking was invented for.

Like I said, very disappointing.

I've been nominated so I'll be doing it in the very near future and I fully intend to nominate a couple of people on here to get the ball rolling.

Ah, the "it's all for charidee, mate" syndrome. If you enjoy it, fine, but don't put others down for not doing it. That's mostly how this nonsense works, by trying to shame people into taking part. I find THAT "very disappointing", tbh.

Agreed. It's just like those chain letter things.

Giving to charity is great. I do give a small amount to a charity each month, but I'm not giving to another one, just because someone's nominated me in the ice bucket challenge.

When I worked in IT, we'd block this awful stuff as a virus.

I'm not anti-charity, btw, since I donate to local ones where 100% goes to the charity itself (ie not payroll).

Not keen on the chain letter concept but did it anyway to amuse the family (my little godson got very upset as he thought I was being mistreated :p). If it helps raise awareness about something all the better.

No, if people don't want to do it that's fine. You just donate more if you're nominated & don't do it. It's the grumpy attitude of putting others down & implying they're stupid for doing it that bugs me.

EDIT: there's another Meme-type picture out there involving the Batman-slapping-Robin drawing, but that's got sweary-words in it so I'll leave that off ;)

On second thoughts I won't bother nominating anyone on here. Puzzling that the Movember thing was a success but this is being seen differently. Each to their own, for me it's a bit of fun to raise awareness and some money.

I'm curious why you feel the need to post your 'disappointment'. Kinda patronising don't you think?

I was nominated, but didn't do it.

I can think of other, more educational ways of raising awareness about cancer research. Also, before you do it, I'd read financial reports of ALS and other involved charities and see how much of the money is actually assigned to cancer research (hint: not so much).

Another aspect is egoboost. I don't really need to show everyone that I do things like that. I have one charity that I donate to every year, that I am sure is clear with their finances and the money actually go towards helping people (see http://www.en.wosp.org.pl). I don't go to social media and record myself writing a cheque, making online transfer or post screenshots with my donation confirmation. I don't need to feed my ego, and from what I've seen in the videos that my friends post on social media, a lot of this stuff is just about egofeed: "Oh, look, I did the challenge too, I am so cool now! Now you do it, or else you'll just a !" kind of a thing.

I also believe in direct action rather than conscious soothing charity donations. Go outside and buy a nice meal for a homeless person, buy a 100 kg of dog snacks and deliver to your local dog shelter - you know, stuff that ACTUALLY does something.

I don't judge the people that fall for stuff like ice bucket challenge, to each their own. I do think however, that this particular initiative is pure waste of water, which is not very wise.

No disrespect to anyone by any means, but stuff like that is just against what I believe in life.

::EDIT::

Also, folks, please tread carefully with your opinions. Let's not be nasty to each other over this, as discussion about stuff like that can easily lead to accusations, insults and offensive actions. So please be respectful towards each other.
