First of all, it's for a good cause (and there are a few causes to choose from now that other charities have got in on the act, if you don't like ALS/MND).

That's not a get-out-of-jail-free card, despite the fact that it's generally used as such.

Secondly, it's fun, raises awareness, and brings people together. This is what social networking was invented for.

I don't need to pour a bucket of ice over my head to have fun, and I don't need anyone else to pour a bucket of ice over their head in order to be "brought together" with them. Come to think of it, I'm pretty sure the human race has survived socially in the past without the need to pour buckets of ice over its heads

Oh, and I don't need to pour a bucket of ice over my head in order to give to charity

On second thoughts I won't bother nominating anyone on here. Puzzling that the Movember thing was a success but this is being seen differently. Each to their own, for me it's a bit of fun to raise awareness and some money.

I think the reason there's a difference is;

1) Giving to charity is and should be a voluntary choice.

2) (1) is being usurped by peer pressure. The amount of posts on my Facebook page from family members all doing the ice bucket thing has basically swamped the feed.

3) I don't like being made to feel like I'm being some kind of social pariah, due to rejecting/reacting against, either feeling pressurised to also doing this ice bucket "challenge", or to be made to look like some kind of curmugdeon, merely because I refuse to be subsumed by the current popular-movement-du-jour.

4) Not saying this is you at all, but there's an intolerable air of smugness from people who have taken this particular "challenge", which basically amounts to "pour a bucket of icy water over yourself then give money to charity", whereas I personally would just prefer to bypass the icy water and give the money to charidee instead.

Just thought it would be something fun to do. My kids absolutely love doing it. I didn't really want a lecture on morality and the rights and wrongs of the world. I think some people need to relax a bit. If you don't agree with it and don't want to do it fine but lay off the holier than thou stuff.

Don't give a monkeys if you think it's "patronising" or not to be honest. It wasn't meant that way. How you choose to take it is not my concern.

Don't want to be picky, but if you asked, you should expect varied replies, and if they are backed by some constructive arguments, it's even better. I wouldn't take it as "hate on charity donations" really, people are just explaining why they haven't done it - as they reply to the question you've asked. It so happened that most of the repliers didn't do it, and so they stated their reasons

Another unfortunate thing to write - I see no hatred in what I and others wrote - merely why we would have objections to the ice bucket meme. There was no hate speech there at all

It just so happens that this is the current thing that is sweeping the world. And it is just a bit of fun... especially nominating others and watching them do it. Some people run marathons, or do parachute jumps, or whatever to raise awareness & money for good causes.

Part of the point of this one is that if you don't want to do it, you can elect to give a larger amount instead. That's what Sir Patrick Stewart did... and good on him I say.

No, I would take that back. But my point is that I wasn't inviting opinions on the rights or wrongs of it, merely whether anyone here had done it and, if so, to post their videos so we can all share the laughs.

Describing something as "just a bit of fun" is another of those get-out-of-jail-free cards though. That doesn't address the wider issues around the phenomenon. But I doubt we'll see eye to eye, so I won't elaborate further

I wonder how many of the ice bucket people are aware that the ALS Association uses their donations to carry out experiments involving both animal testing and embryonic stem cells. They may not care about the latter, but those kind of people tend to be opposed to animal testing. That being said, I'm generally fine with both when it's required for essential scientific research.

To the whiners (it's getting catching...) Here's my take on things as posted on Facebook... No-one's forcing anyone to do anything and most people are nominating people they think would join in the fun... Why not have fun while raising money and involve your friends rather than just whizzing £20, or however much, in the post or via t'internet.... Be interesting, be inspiring and, above all, be fun when giving to charity!

If you're planning to do the Ice Bucket Challenge, bear in mind, that before ALS/MND and the publicity seeking celebs hogged the limelight, the Deaf Community were doing this themselves in the UK before the ALS crew stole the limelight so do not think that you ONLY have to give/donate to ALS/MND charities as it's not 'owned' by them as such.... Give to a charity of YOUR choice rather than the one that's getting all the publicity... I'd prefer to see people give to Deaf charities such as Hearing Dogs, Cambridgeshire Deaf Association and Action on Hearing Loss (formerly the RNID)....

tldr : Dear whiners, if you haven't got anything righteous or hopeful (or helpful) for a change then say nothing at all!

I was actually hoping that Ringo (the cat) would have stuck around - might have added a bit more comedy to the vid. Sadly he sauntered off of his own accord just before the deed.

Agree with the rest of your post. I'm aware of the animal testing with ALS in the USA, but to my knowledge, MND.uk don't do that and as you say there are plenty of other causes to donate to. Friends of mine have donated to Macmillan, and Alzheimers.
