If someone from Fdev streams themselves unlocking all the Guardian tech. I will eat my eye patch.

Copper lasts a long time. I work for a rural telco with some old farm houses still using 19 gauge twisted copper pairs put in during the 1940s, if not further back.

Also fiber is prohibitively expensive in a lot of places, for example my community is about 12,000 households spread out over an area of 90 square miles. To run fiber to all of them would take the better part of a decade and cost over 60 million dollars. Even with some heavy infrastructure loans and a high take rate on fiber optic packages, making that work from a financial aspect is incredibly difficult.

VDSL is a decent solution in the interim but it requires the household be well under a mile from an Orm/Cabinet. Which once again.. rural area, stuff is spread out.

Thank you.

Can't help wondering what all the junction boxes are like, though.

My hunch is that Frontier's goal for Elite is just different than what the players want. While the community wants Elite to be a more engaging and fun game to play, Frontier simply wants Elite to survive (to sell DLC) while investing the bare minimum of effort to make that happen. They put more priority on Elite Store mechanics and content than they do on actual game mechanics and content. They value how the game looks over how it plays, probably because graphics are very marketable while mechanics are not. Sometimes actions speak very loudly, as long as you are willing to take a few steps back to look at them objectively.
I sometimes really can't envisage the supposed 100+ people working on this, and we being where we are now after 3-4yrs.

The Q4 update will be a very telling moment for Elite Dangerous. A lot of people expect much from Beyond and it all rests on the Q4 update now. Will Frontier come with their A game and put some real effort into it? Or will it be more bare minimum effort coupled with new store possibilities?

It's going to be an interesting year for Elite no matter which way it swings...
Absolutely... I'm just about keeping a grain of hope that some bar raising design and development can be done for Q4 of this year...

So how many times is an acceptable number, in order to have access to all the new Guardian toys?

Personally, I feel 18 is unreasonable but think 6 is probably fair - with the caveat that each Guardian site only provides a single blueprint type.

hmm 6 is possibly a bit heavy if you have to use all sites - but I don't know how many sites there are - if its less than 10 sites though, then at least 3 or 4. I'm not suggesting it be made into a faceroll

However it could be less if they added extra elements like having to scan random crashed thargoids that "stole" guardian tech information (that infiltrated thier systems and made the crash hur hur).

You can add busywork in ways that make it feel more like you are actually doing something, using already ingame assets.

- Npc's grandfathers, grandfather "found something" a long time ago and told his decendants that "one day" someone would need it, and when they come, to give it to them no questions asked.

- Crashed ships with ships logs saying the "Dark Wheel" had asked them to move an item, and paid enough money that no wasn't an answer, and anyone who's smart doesn't refuse a request from the "Dark Wheel" anyway. (IIRC the dark wheel was a secret society in the original novella and linked to raxxla in some way.)

give me an hour and and I can give you lots more, it's not like it's hard to think of ways to make aquiring guardian artifacts more interesting.

Wonder if they would do it if we did a "go fund me" thing say for £500 GBP to donate to a charity - but with the caveat FDev can't use that as propaganda or advertising as "hey look how nice we are". A wholly playerbased charity fundraiser that only pays out if someone high up the chain, streams it, with no dev tools.

what do you think?

You haven't played the game since 2014, you've never once visited a guardian site. You should tell people that before you start theorycrafting about them based on entirely second hand knowledge.

Silly forumites, just getting them to play the game normally is like pulling teeth. I suppose if you want to reach for the stars so they at least make it to the moon, that's a good strategy.

Put me down for a paint job and ship kit if they do this.

FDev have enough money, and buying a ship kit is self serving - charity or nothing mate.

this again.

please refer to my previous responses of "people don't play football professionally yet still complain about it, the managers, the weather, diving, the referee's, the dogs, the bad hamburgers, match fixing and pretty much everything else about the game."

don't like that analogy?

Insert any of these instead: politics, war, the countries ecomony, the world economy, the trees, the animals, the elephants, the sea, the coral reefs, plastic pollution, greenhouse gas pollution, the heat island effects of every major city in an ecological temperate zone, ball tampering in cricket, how loud vuvuzelas are and why they have been banned from most stadiums, South African national service, leopards being shot by [redacted] hunters, amur snow leapards being endangered, the ivory trade.

you want some more?

The 2 last white rhino's, treefrogs becoming extinct, lots of other frog species becoming or already extinct, dog fighters, c*ckeral fighters (chickens), aids, smallpox making a comeback in some places, donald trump, mexicans, colored, rednecks, hillbillies, why it's illegal to make moonshine, italian corruption in italy, the mafia, the leaning tower of Pisa, Venice being constantly flooded, the value of the dollar, donald trump firing missiles at syria, russians poisoning people in the streets of UK (allegedly - for legal reasons), russians invading Ukraine, syrians gassing civilians, out of control house prices in the UK, Brexit, america being broke and borrowing money from the chinese (that's not going to end well at all, so bad, so very very bad), sharia law in the UK, global warming.

you want some more?

Paedophiles, the catholic church, paedophiles in the catholic church, child abuse, murder, the banking system that caused a major global financial crash, aboriginal rights to land in Australia, native Indian rights to land in America, columbia, the drug trade, drug mules, donkey mistreatment in arabic countries, whales dying because they have eaten plastic waste and choked to death, red blooms in the sea killing millions of fish, deforestation, free trade coffee not being what it claims, rigged voting, the EU, greece and thier borked economy (who don't want to pay thier debts), great whites, manta rays, box jellyfish swarms in australia, why the kelp forests of the world are dying out, overfishing, pollution, canada and thier brilliant national Ice hockey team, the tour d'france and doping, lance armstrong winning the tour d'france (repeatedly) while doping, bears, hunting season, why fuel costs so much, nuclear power and the after effects, chernobyl, ashima, hiroshima, WW2 in general and lastly - Donald trump, kim jong un and putin probably going to start WW3 anytime now.

you want some more?

no? then please be quiet (not what I wrote the first time).

I'll wager in that lot and many others like it, there is a topic in there about which you have never personally experienced, but will have talked and argued about at length, because of something you read about or heard on the news.

PS - and just to reiterate stigbob - everything you've ever learned, read, heard and were taught about in schools was SECOND HAND KNOWLEDGE, it's a 100% certainty that every penny you've ever earned was on the back of SECOND HAND KNOWLEDGE, in essence your entire existance and that of your children (if you have any) is based on you and your family knowing stuff someone else told you and them about, SECOND HAND, or third or 4th or a millionth.

I suggest you get yourself a better catchphrase, because that one isn't working for you.

You could get Sandro to do it and show us that our time is valued :)

I usually don't watch streams - but THIS I would watch. Watch him suffer doing it 18 times to unlock everything, show us how our time is valued, and keep the spirits and motivation high at all times, no dozing off, no watching youtube or Netflix or Stan or any other sources. Show us how appealing this is.

As it is meant to be a "personal narrative" I expected we would need to do certain stuff to open up these modules, pretty much like you have said.

Doing the one same thing 20 odd times does make it a personal narrative.

While I could do what I wanted to do and upgrade engineered modules as I went around in the old an even easier in the new version of engineers as mats could be found from anywhere you are, these mats can only be found in one place, therefore forcing you to visit it each time again and again and again.

It should be once, but with a mini quest for each item before hand with a slightly different puzzle for each guardian item for a slightly different material.

Then it would feel like a personal narrative.

Nice. ED didn't work out for you four years ago, that's not a big deal it's just a video game.

Maybe you should look for a new hobby.

Pushing almost 2 weeks now, and the crickets are getting louder.

C'mon you guys... this is getting pathetic.

STEP UP!

The silence from FDev is deafening, it seems that the passion and love for ED was left behind at the old headquarters along with the 49% stake sale, it certainly looks to me that FDev are doing a 'Bungie'.

Fdev are starting to look cowardly at this point as the official response to this thread was 'can't with rural broadband' is bordering on pathetic and ignorant. I believe the reason they will ignore this request is that they don't want to embarrass themselves on a live stream with their own stale and lazy product.

The only way FDev can redeem themselves in my eyes is to demonstrate that they playtest their own product without command line shortcuts which they cannot or will not facilitate, well if you are going to be that ignorant towards the community then my wallet will be just as ignorant towards Fdev.

Well at least that one guy took the trouble to reply, since I've been internet challenged myself before I'm inclined to believe him.

But he's not responsible. It's the design department that needs to step up and do the dogfood challenge. They're the people we want to make this particular point with.

Doing this either imply that :

a) one employee would have to do it during his worktime
b) one employee would have to do it during his freetime

a) isn't going to happen because nobody would waste workforce on something like this in a company
b) isn't going to happen, cause nobody want to be reminded of work when being at home. Plus it would not be in a controlled/official environement, so...

They've done charity events before. And a fair few people are offering to stump up cash.

And they would earn some street cred and goodwill by doing it.
