This any good? Does it still have a player base? Really want a new flight game to play, but BoS is a little expensive right now considering I'm in the tattoo process.

Okay MP looks like a no-go. But is there a mission editor?

I think people still play multiplayer IL-2 '46. You probably need to install Hyperlobby to find servers (make sure you pick a no-mods one if you have the stock game).

I can only say - if you dont care about MP this sim is fantastic. And personally I much more prefer it than newest Il-2 BoS.
Plethora of planes including few prototypes. Tons of maps. User made skins and mods. Better AI than in new version. Very good mission editor that will keep you busy for months.
Its dirty cheap, grab it and you wont regret it.

I think I'll give it a shot, after I've paid the deposit for the tattoo in a few days. This ten quid could go a long way.

There are some good mods out there so that the dated graphics doesn’t look so dated, it’s a must just like CfoD

It's a great sim with a huge amount of additional player made content. Check out:

SAS 1946 for mods especially VP Modpack that will make the game look quite good for its age.

Mission4Today for more missions and campaigns then you could ever play!

The amount of content and updates is staggering.
