I'm Not Impressed

... with flat panels any longer. Even a nice 32" 2560x1440 monitor.

I just flew out to Colonia. I spent the first 7,000 LY in VR. It wasn't fatiguing at all, but I switched to 2D so I could try to keep up with my TV watching. Sure, the graphics were crisp and clear and the FOV was a lot wider (and I could stuff my face). However, the 3D effect was utterly unconvincing. It looked totally flat to me. The worst was maybe the cockpit glass with the sun shining on it looked like a vertical panel, and the suns were just flat discs.

With about 10 jumps to go, I switched back to VR. It looked a little shimmery at first, but being back in 3D was amazing. Setting VR Ultra, then setting super sampling to 1.0 and HMD quality to 1.5 made it look a lot better, and within a few jumps I wasn't missing the crisp and clear graphics, or even the FOV, of the monitor at all. And as an extra bonus, I had to stop shoveling Doritos into my mouth.

Hahaha- yeah, I think quite a few of us have been there too!

Never found VR to be a barrier for Doritos or other handy snack objects though (just drinking).
Next poster will say something about a straw... :D

Yup, simple hand-mouth co-ordination, and knowing where you stowed your chippies.

Oh, and, a straw.

Z...

Why have 32" screen or even 60" screen. When you can have ALL screen.

Yea, it's hard to go back. But it was costly to get here.

I'm also in the 3D ED crew for life. I'm on a roughly 5 kilo light year (round trip) passenger mission, and I've done the whole thing in VR. Last time I tried to play 2D, I switched back after 10 minutes, IIRC.

I can't wait to join, but it's going to be a while saving up for the cheddar!

I suppose one of those caps with the straws would be ideal for hands-free drinking seshes.

I can easily spend 4+ hours with the HMD on. Typically I'm bounty hunting or just mucking about in space; no long haul mission or exploration, yet, but I don't *think* changing my play style to something more like exploration will change my stance. It's my go2 VR game even if I don't really have anything I want to achive in the game on the day, and I just feeling like being in VR space

It's a greater than the sum of it's parts; ED(1) + VR(1) = 3.

It really does completely change the experience doesn't it? I get asked a lot in Discord from various commanders about VR (Rift for me) and what do I think of it. I always sum it up the same:

You're playing a very cool video game with some beautiful graphics.
I'm flying a f'ing space ship.

As for playtime I've had 5-6 sessions that were over 12 hours long. Sure my face was a bit sweaty and my cheeks a bit sore but nothing bad at all. Looking at my in-game play stats I've done just over 450 hours, all of that coming after I purchased my Rift. All but maybe 2 hours has been in VR. The only times I don't play in VR is when I'm doing something like planning out Engineering stuff, where I want to be able to compare ship inventory with EDEngineer, etc. As soon as I finish that I jump right back into VR.

I'm sure like the rest of you what's the most exciting is being able to see the future this will bring. 5 years from now, and possibly sooner, when we have dual 4k panels with 200+ FOV it's truly going to be amazing. When the clarity and image quality we see on our flat panel displays comes to the headset it will be an absolute game changer.

PC Master Race for the win!

I don't know guys I still get a bang out of switching to 2D and seeing how amazing the game looks maxed in high res. Play like that for awhile then switch back to the Vive to get blown away by the VR experience again. Its all good.

I'll certainly admit that the times I do play on my 3 1080p displays I always think "damn, if it only looked this crisp in VR!" So I can't blame you for that at all but for me when I'm not in VR it feels like a game rather than an experience. I also find that I turn my head left/right to look at my panels which of course only works in VR

I only switch to 2D when I show my kids some astronomical stuff.

I am missing the screenshots, but they are still good (wish my computer could handle ultraVR)

Session length was never a problem, except when I had framerate problems in the past.

Curious fact. I'm playing ED in a cheap VR visor + smartphone at 1080 vertically stretched resolution through trinusVR and I can't make my way back to 2D monitor!!!! I can't immagine what will happen when I'll put on the Oculus rift.
Also there are some virtual desktop apps coming out. So there will not be the need to wear off the VR gear to do some metagaming or forum read outside of VR. Yeah!

There are actually two different VR desktop apps out already, Virtual Desktop and BigScreen. Virtual Desktop isn't free at $15 where BigScreen is. Both let you have a floating 2D version of your desktop in front of you where you can adjust the size/distance to your liking. If your PC is setup with extended desktop (multiple monitors) the virtual desktop will be the size of your real desktop (I have 3 1080p so my desktop in VR is 5760x1080).

I prefer BigScreen as it's a lot cleaner and has some interesting social features - you can join a public/private room where you're basically sitting on a couch with your screen in front of you next to another person on the couch with their screen in front of them. Sorta like 2 people sitting side by side with laptops open. Both can also handle side-by-side 3D video, when playing a 3D rip you can make it full screen and the apps will handle the left/right sides of the video to your left/right eyes. Fairly easy and cool.

That said I'm not sure I see this entering the workplace anytime soon. An office full of people wearing VR headsets would be a very closed off place.

Not to mention the logistical nightmare of getting to the coffee makers! Or in my case the water cooker for my tea.
A colleague of mine was pondering the use of VR for teleconferencing though. That might be a useful application to have at work. But that might also be more useful in combination with AR. I could see people walking around the office with HoloLens (or likewise) devices on the heads.

ha! Once you go VR you never want to go back.

I agree with you, I have some problems with the SDE (I can see it, everytime), but the immersion is really here. You jump to another system, arrive a the star, and then WOW! In my Conda cockpit, I can see it takes all the left panel, it's so awesome ! It makes me want to go again on my "big star" pilgrimage again (Betelgeuse, Rigel, etc..).

I agree. It doesn't matter how big or high resolution a screen is it still sucks because you are standing on the outside looking in. Who in there right mind would when given the option of, hey look at this screen. Or hey would you like to step in side the screen. Who would chose I'm fine just looking in.
