Imperial Clipper .... lovely ship but i'm going back to Asp

Just finally at lunch time managed to be awarded Baron in the Empire after the necessary rep work....
I'd be intermingling that with trading and slowly was creeping towards 60m Cr in assets ....

Baron mission dropped at lunchtime so i jumped at it and headed straight over to Miphifa to buy my Clipper
So excited ... was able to upgrade most of the stuff to the spec i kinda wanted straight away (nearly anyway)

So took it for a spin .... wow ... love it ... handling is great for a ship this size. The engine sound had even the Asp's beat out ...

Sleek lines, beautiful canopy .... weapon placement... yeah - we know that ain't the best but hey can live with that...

Set course for where i wanted to head next (about 90Ly) and noticed most of the route was dotted (signifying fuel limit)
Came back out .... 1st jump ... estimated to consume about 30% of the tank!!!
On a 17.6Ly jump!!!
So total jump range unloaded is <50Ly
Thats no better than a hauler

Figured the Clipper to be a luxury cruiser capable of a bit of range .... not having to carefully plot each jump to make sure i can scoop at every damn star

Sorry .... selling the clipper.... absolutely gutted .... been looking forward to this ship for ages but i like to cover distance and roam about ....
The luxury and other elements of the clipper are all dashed for me in light of continually penny pinching on fuel

This thing given it can carry easily 160-220t cargo.... yet has a 16t fuel tank.... thats wrong.

So disappointed this thing is no better than a T7 at lugging around :(

The short jump distance i could tollerate - bit of a faff but not a deal-breaker .... total jump distance is a total ship killer for me

Yeah, the small tank makes it a liability for exploring.

You can stick a class 7 scoop in it which is cool but it really needs a 32 ton tank as insurance against those unscoopable stars.

Such a gorgeous ship otherwise - the bridge is stunning and perfect for taking screenshots.

Yup tank is too small you can get an ok range if you fit it really light but still limited in jumps, sometimes I think it was a mistake

Got an A5 scoop on mine. Takes around 15 seconds to load 16T of fuel. Range obviously increases considerably if you fly the ship in ECON mode.

Maybe you will be missing those class 3 weapons btw. Or maybe not. I don't know.
The thing I dislike most in the Clipper is the flight model inside the docking bay. No way to easy park it like the T7. If you pitch down heading for the closest large pad (the ones near the entrance) it just starts spinning downwards, and it's ugly. It needs slow vertical thrusters movements. The T7 (or Asp) was way more agile in the bay.

Many reasons the Asp Explorer is preferable, jump-range, fuel tank, it's more agile, it can land on outposts , and of course, a decent jump-range.
.
I use an A-rated Hyperdrive for my Imperial Clipper, and it doesn't disappoint (lots of D-Class gear to further improve jump range).
I too wish I had a larger fuel-tank (or at least the option to fit one) , yet there are other places the Imperial Clipper excel.
For me that was the much higher cargo-capacity (as I'm always the trader :) ), yet if you were to fit your Clipper for war, I don't think you'd be disappointed

I feel a rant coming.....

It burns me up that the bigger ships have poor jump ranges, even after speding tens of millions of the A FSDs. FD needs to fix this. Bigger ships need greater jump ranges, it's only logical. Make it so FD, even if we have to pay higher prices for them.

doesn't make sense that the faction based sips which take alot of time to get are not as good as the ships you can just buy. figured they be a bit better

I actually just land it like an aircraft, pitch the nose up and and let it sink with FA OFF on a slow steady downward trajectory. It's pretty much a non issue, those weak vertical thrusters work as advantage with FA OFF

relax, it's just one guy's opinion

I sometimes find that I don't like a particular ship for some reason or another. Maybe I should post a thread for every little niggle that gets under my skin.

I found out about the clippers weedy fuel tank yesterday after making the pilgrimage from Empire space (achenar) to Sol. I very nearly ran out and I had a fuel scoop but I kept getting those purple not suns. Thus i needed a more circumspect analysis of the route to ensure I could get a refill. The clipper is not much kop for touring in. I might swap it for a Python later. It needs a 32T tank but I guess its like that for a reason.

actually jump range is OK as long as you can hit about 18/20 LY in a single jump, but coming from the asp it will be a shock to go back down to very low jump ranges :p

the only ship that can compete with the asp in jump range (that i own at least) is the anaconda, when fully exploration fit it can hit about 37 LY range (and thats more than an asp :D)

Flying a Python (Lakon 8), but the Asp is King, in all ways except cargo capacity.
Asp' reign, wonder when they will see the Nerf Bat ;)

Cheers Cmdrs

your comment is not logical at all, FD have followed aircraft design when it comes to jumping, the larger the mass (gross weight) the shorter each jump or hop in an aircraft. the Clipper does have a sub standard fuel tank, but it excels in so many areas they had to give it an Achilles heel.

Edit - Am not against FD producing higher rated FSD's, however the logic behind the design makes sense.

It is jarring to find your range decrease when you upgraded to a more expensive ship. If you felt that way about the clipper, best not to try the python at all. Not only is its max no cargo mostly D-rated systems with A rated FSD jump range around 22 ly (I think 15 with cargo on my setup), but its fuel costs are very, very high so you basically have to scoop. I am okay with scooping, but upgrading to python turned my old trade route just barely into multiple jumps and added a lot of scoop time.
