Ships Imperial Courier

So yeah... The IMPERIAL COURIER... Really looking forward to seeing what it's all about ;-)

Personally hoping it's a 2mil - 12mil ship, I don't really care whether it lands on a small or medium pad, but it should be a tightly packaged technological marvel of a ship.

There are 118 unique posters in this thread and reading it, when the Courier is revealed, no matter what stats it has 117 people will be disappointed.

I think that's a limitation of the upgrade system which is really too basic for a game with this level. It should have been done so that you had a variety of manufacturers that made different upgrades, with pros and cons to each in quality, capability, price, and availability.

Instead, we have this slot based class/grade system with a simplistic diminishing returns scale of cost and capability. With a system like that, it would never really be very varied even if they further gimped other ships from maxing out; players will always find the ideal combination for a specific application.

The design discussion archive has many customization plans for the ships. Its a bit vague as to whether any of it is still planned or it has all been scrapped at this stage.

3 Medium ( :( ) hardpoints, 4 Utility.

277(base?) speed.

~7.8 LY jump range with (I assume) an E FSD. This (with the size I assume) means it jumps a little shorter than the Vulture, though the weapons won't be as heavy overall so may go further.

Well, the p-dist is the telling equipment.

That thing just might be my next RES fighter if it is reasonably maneouverable! :D The cockpit canopy suggests the view will be the best yet all round.

Personally hoping it's a 2mil - 12mil ship...

From that dev post, he implies it'll be just over 2 mil, that's perfectly affordable! :D

Sounds fine to me :) Anyone more savvy in these things able to work out how effective 3 Medium Hardpoints vs the 2 Small and 2 Medium of a Viper would be for light combat?

1 medium is better than 2 small, because the damage is the same but the medium waist less energy = you can shoot longer

if you use kinetic weapons, the medium will be better because of the malus to damage vs bigger ships

so yea, 3 medium is a little better than 2 med 2 small

If we go by the hardpoint rule of 1.6 more damage each size up, we total up:

Viper 5.2
Courier 4.8
Vulture 5.12 (smaller than Viper!)

In reality, the Power Distributor is the important component though, and the smaller hardpoints are penalised against medium and large hulls.

It will be better against medium and large ships because the damage penalty is less severe on top of doing a little more damage than the viper would. But at the rank of master to get in one you will already be in a vulture soooo yeah.
the other thing we don't know about yet is what kind of power plant can it equip? It might be alright if it has the power to really use all of those utility mounts. It could be a tanky little thing if there's the power and the base shield to warrant it.
tbh I'm kind of disappointed with this reveal, I was hoping this would be an imperial answer to the vulture instead it's a stepping stone to one..

Well, I would be in a Vulture if I liked the Vulture. Tried it for a bit, and then went back to my Viper as I just didn't get on with the Vulture for some reason...

it's tagged as a multi-purpose and has low cargo, so we can expect a very good power plant, and yea with 3 or 4 shield boosters this ship is gonna be extra tanky for sure

7.8 default jump looks like A4 FSD to me, same as Vulture, which means something around 20Ly max range. If that's the case it's not an exploration vessel.

Another ship to buy, fly 30 minutes and then park forever. Very disappointed. If they introduce these cheap ships at least give them some flavor. I fully expected this Courier to be a light ship with the only unique attribute to be its long range.

don't underestimate this ship, for what i can see it's gonna be fast and have a nice acceleration, very maneuverable, with a lot of shield, a good amount of power and a decent jump range (around 17-23)

only 2 bad news, cargo is low and price is high

Edit: guess i was right after all, it's an "evil Cobra"

I had been under the impression the effectiveness went up 50% with hardpoint size. So two smalls did 25% more damage than one medium.

Yes, that seems closer to what I thought, but I didn't know about there being a penalty against medium and large hulls.

Same here, but I won't get started on that topic again... :p

Hugely disappointed in the hardpoint sizes - I was really hoping for 2M + 1L, and a 12-15mil price tag - but MB has said it's a very nippy ship in terms of agility, so there's hope yet.

It is odd, though, because you'd expect everybody who gets to Master in the Empire would already have a better ship than that.
