News Important Community Update (01/03)

Hello everyone,

I just wanted to clarify some of the queries and concerns that were raised in this thread. Some of this is covered in the OP, and it's worth mentioning that we'll have more news and information to follow about upcoming content in the future.

What does 'The Next Era' contain?
The Next Era update will be in-game content and, as we've said previously, as development progresses, we will share more news and announcements on features, as well as timelines regarding this upcoming content for Elite.

Future updates – what’s the plan? No major update until the latter end of 2020?
As we said in the OP, we will still be making updates to Elite Dangerous on a 3-4 month cycle. These updates will primarily focus on new player and welcoming experiences, as well as a number of QoL improvements for all players - and we'll be announcing what the first update will include in the coming weeks. We'll also be detailing more information about the upcoming development-supported events in the near future.

Bugs
Our commitment to squashing bugs hasn't ended, and we're going to be implementing a new bug report system. As we have mentioned previously, the new bug tracking website will make the bug reporting process easier, better, and more manageable! You will be able to log issues as you're used to, and the community will be able to vote on your issue. This will consider it confirmed and in that way we can put more focus into accurately examining the highest ranked issues.

Powerplay
We hear your concerns and feedback on Powerplay in and outside of this thread. We'll be evaluating and looking into some of the proposed solutions Sandro detailed in his post here. This is an on-going investigation and nothing is confirmed at the moment, but rest assured that we will let you know when we have updates regarding this.

Ice Planets and Fleet Carriers
Both Ice Planets and Fleet Carriers are still planned for the development road-map, and we'll be able to share more information with you in the future.

LEP Content
The Next Era content will be paid for content and LEP owners will receive it as part of their pass. We don't have anything to announce regarding any additional LEP content at the moment.

Thank you for all the feedback you've provided so far. Keep it coming, we'll be reading!

Hi Will,

I'd like to put these suggestions/wish list for 2020 update if that's ok?

I realise this is just another post of wants, but I can't help myself :)

Wall of text...HO!!!!

2020 features wish:
I dream of having a seamless exit from our ship seat...walking around the whole ship with purpose.
An engineering area, an armaments room with suits, guns, science investigation equipment, flamethrower, transportable sentry-turrets.

An airlock inner door with buttons to open close and lock.
A ramp on appropriate ships (ASP) from airlock that opens slowly with pistons ala. Millennium Falcon.
Gas pooring out of engines and vents swirling around as I exit.

Point defence in ship for defending entrance and a deployable energy fence for placing around ship camp for gameplay requiring leaving ship should unknown energy monsters come near aka. The movie Forbidden planet.

Ship takes longer to start up so there's a reason to defend it while monsters attack closed ramp trying to pull it open or make a hole. Need to Defend from inside ship if they get in.

Rover buggy has equipment storage for guns, science electronics, ammo, mini camp fence etc.

Space legs focus is either totally or mainly for co-op and solo.
Pvp could be a nightmare if getting trolled but could be allowed for certain mission types like:
We select a mission for recovering a downed A.I. Secret military upgrade for ships, our instanced team of 4 (two gunners, science specialist/medic and heavy) are to meet at a point on a planet that ships optionally can be left at. We can sometimes get close enough to dungeon underground base or semi-abandoned alien spawn sprawling caves to park ship but sometimes it's too rocky or too many trees so we need to all take our buggys. Or walk.

Another game mission appears for others of a certain power play faction who can instance up for the stop them/intercept mission.
This gives specific intended and consensual pvp gameplay.
Others are co-op only.

Instance, don't instance. Both are attractive.

After a substantial gameplay of fighting into many variable caves/base, I want us to be chased back to our rovers and ships. Hence need for our camps energy fence and sentry turrets and ship point defences.
Ship takes longer to warm up for take off hence more panic and reason for camp etc.

Clawed alien ghost monster trying to scrape ship entrance (/ramp-door has robust health but can be opened leaving only airlock as final stop).
We fight if they get in.
Ship can have modules for a science containment room.
Monsters have a chance of escaping containment and again an in ship battle can occur.
Airlock can be purged. Possibly whole ship.

No loading screens for ship entry/exit.

I know, it's all never going to happen and it's very specific.

My continued dream since I was a kid in the 80's...maybe one day.
Space engineers almost kind of does it in a not a proper game way.
If SC ever finishes maybe it will. But I hope something along these lines happens with ED.

Excellent to have given an update. Clearly, the company has its own development plans, whose time horizon may please or not, but it is a business issue. What I think the community found most annoying was the absence of any information.
However, regardless of the content released I sincerely hope that the team that will be responsible for evolutionary maintenance in this year and a half aims to correct those distortions and deficiencies of the gameplay and narratives that technically do not require great effort but require in terms of creativity.

That's not something we're able to answer at the moment. But rest assured, when we're ready to start talking about those features, and the contents of the updates, we will.

Will, the problem is that you (Frontier) have a policy of staying silent. We (the community) understand you do this out of a "dammed if they do, dammed if they don't" mentality from the community, but it breeds a vicious catch 22 situation, you stay silent and that frustrates the community, so you post little snippets of info, like you have here, and that still frustrates the community.

We are not asking to know, and don't need to know, full details of what's coming. We (or most of us who are sensible, mature, rational members of the community) are not expecting you to commit yourselves to things still being planned and not signed off as final. We just want to know if four things are or are not coming 1) Fleet Carriers 2) Ice planets 3) Atmospheric Landings and 4) Walking Around. You confirmed in the Lave Radio interview on Tuesday night, that Fleet Carriers and Ice Planets are coming, but what about Atmospheric Landings and Walking Around? All we are asking for is a yes or no.

I really really hope that this will not take many (more) months, there's a group of players that's basically ruining the game experience for the rest of your customers and you basically didn't do a thing to fix that until now. And do you want to know a little secret? Many players would love to play Powerplay as a concept, most of them simply drop that when they understand how messy it is, so there's a lot of unexpressed potential in there... even with the last point of Sammarco's proposal... :)

Another good thing to do would be to actually have some dedicated discussion channel (in the new forums I'd say at this point) with whoever is working on Powerplay right now. We've got many players that have literally years of experience and could give a hell of a feedback, especially considering the new changes. There's some things even in Sammarco's proposal which wouldn't be effective, so it would be nice to talk about that with people in charge.

You did say you want some constructive feedback. Lovely. Give us a chance to be really constructive.

I'd prefer Frontier to focus on fixing broken mechanics before even thinking about any of this, but I'm not a marketing guru. I'm interested in the game's health, not its spectacularity.

Hello Voronwe,

As we mentioned previously, nothing is confirmed yet regarding Powerplay changes.

That said, player feedback has been an instrumental part in ensuring that any revisions we bring in actually address the issues players are experiencing. This is something we've seen more recently with the BGS revisions. Sandro's initial post regarding possible Powerplay changes was posted so he could garner feedback from the community and there's no reason why we couldn't do that again!

On a more serious note, Powerplay needs changes much sooner rather than later- each week is making the situation worse. Please don't leave Power pledges in the dark and either say yes, 'change is coming' or 'no changes this year' without ambiguity when these pre 2020 updates are announced. Powerplay is an involving feature that people invest a huge amount of time into, if its set to remain in its broken state it would be a courtesy so we don't lie to ourselves or others about its future any longer.

Something about this and the first post lead me to think a major engine update is being worked on...

No doubt I'm wrong again. Take your time Frontier and do a good job on whatever you have planned for us!

Thanks, Will, for this update.

Speaking of powerplay, could you please remove the 10-15-20-25-50 bucket of buying pp commodities? When I visit LYR HQ in my Cutter after weeks of exploration, having to buy commodities in 10 unit groups is very depressing. Wouldn't it be better if the system wouldn't charge me for the first 10 and let me fill my cargo space like normal commodities cargo?

Thanks again.

So are Ice Planets / Carriers going to be seen before the 2020 major update, or are they considered part of that major update now?

When might we expect even basic outline information on what the 2020 update will be?

That's not something we're able to answer at the moment. But rest assured, when we're ready to start talking about those features, and the contents of the updates, we will.

I think the Fleet Carrier is a complicated feature to create (but it could be really cool). Instances, services and equipment offered on board that may require a connection to the system's BGS and have an impact on it. The conditions of access, how to make it move (arrive and leave the instance as on board the SRV when you call your ship). I sincerely believe that there are probably many very technical questions.

My question is: why don't you talk to your community about all this? Even if there are problems and abandoned features, the community is mature and involved. I think she understands (and maybe even could help?). What she has trouble understanding, IMHO is these long secrets and the famous "Soon" that create doubt and phantasms.

I'd find it really cool that you gives more details, discuss about problems and successes for the next features, etc. In my opinion, this is the best way to federate this community that you are the first to describe as wonderfull (and she is!)

See, the FSS. Its a glimpse of what life is like when you live inside a dalek. The dalek simulator...

But on a more serious note, its completely wiped out searching for galactic odditys and interesting picture opportunitys. Some of us feel that the galaxy is the greatest asset of this game. Its very sad that such gameplay has been neglected.

I am 100% certain there are still people doing that.

and i am equally as certain that its spoiled the gameplay im talking about. You can argue the point in this thread....

Or this one...

There have been several thousand posts on the subject while we waited for something official.

I see the new bug report system (bug tracking system) as a huge improvement! I am sure that it will help greatly, and it also will fix the 'Known Bug List' concerns. The old bug report forum has x bugs reported and 10*x threads, despite the efforts to merge threads. A Bug Tracker will help greatly!

[up] for this!

The only difference between finding oddities before and now is that you need to find them yourself. You make it sound like it is now impossible. It is not. Fo me it is now better with the FSS because as you scan the planets you see their orbit lines and can see how the planets align with each other, I enjoy seeing the revealing the jigsaw when before it was already made. Unless you are using VR though as the orbit lines have gone from VR which I find very frustrating.
