Improved guards gauss gun.

I don't quite understand what it's for. To spend a lot of time and resources on it and get nothing.
Maybe I'm doing something wrong?

the one that shoots three times in a row? Like the powerplay railgun?
Yes.
If it was easy to get them, I understand, but we got improved plasma guards and it's better !
We got the improved guards shotgun and it's better.
But what's wrong with the gauss?

Every shot does 1/3 the damage
So miss one out of three.. Loose 33% damage. Better just make one hit (or miss)

Same problem that the Powerplay railgun has

No.
The Imperial Hammer is easier to get and is not much worse than a normal hammer due to the fact that it shoots instantly.
Here there is a delay on the shot and you need to drive the target longer, which is even worse.
In fact, to improve this gun in any way, it just has to shoot at once.

The imperial hammer does not fire instantly. It charges up the same as regular gauss and fires three shots of roughly 40% regular damage each - so landing all three does ~120% damage of a single railgun shot.
The modified guardian gauss fires four shots that each do 25% damage of a regular gauss cannon. There's no damage bonus for landing them all, but also missing one shot means you only waste 25% of the total damage instead of 100%. It also comes with more overall ammo.

Regular gauss was already a great weapon so there wasn't much point making it more effective. The modified version makes it more accessible to people who might not have strong confidence in their aiming skills.

You don't know the mechanics of the game. The imperial hammer is fired at once.

It's a hit scan weapon, like lasers, with a delay, so it is fired at once after the delay. So both statements are true insofar as mechanics are concerned.
Yes, but the guardian gauss has an extra initial delay, which essentially worsens the salvation gauss gun.

You can tell when the button is pressed because you can hear them charging up before they fire.

Have you actually used them in the game, before telling me I don't know how they work? Why do you think they have a "charge time" shown in their weapon stats?

Since imperial hammers are worse than regular railguns they are not popular in the game. But I've been using them on a couple of ships for fun for about 5-6 years now.

Hammers are great for triggering plant explosions, and because it autofires if you hold the trigger.

Sadly, neither are relevant for mod gauss.

Tried both the single shot and burst fire version and TBH I prefer the original single shot variant, although I believe the burst fire doesn't generate as severe a thermal load as the single shot (spec wise it should be the same), I guess spreading the four thermal spikes over a few seconds helps heat dissipation kinda like the SCB mod to reduce overheating.
