Improved ice-planets and carriers? When?

I think they went to do it, weren't happy with how carriers worked, so reworking. I think the graphics engine is having a rework, due 5o ice. Guess they got to some tech or performance issues doing it originally.

When it comes the ice will look amazing, but the entire planet landscape is being improved and textures on all planets, hence the delay to get it working right

"Hey, do you remember how in October 2017 at the Expo they announced the fleet carriers and the new ice planets?"
"Yeah, I do! Those were the two things the crowd cheered the loudest about! So how are they?"
"Oh they actually never came. And if they will, it'll be Q4 2020..."
We still don't know if anything is coming between now and Q4 2020. Maybe they want to make Space Legs first, so you can walk on it.

They just forgot to mention they're talking about the long term vision...

Carriers were shelved for now but not removed from development about 4-5 months ago. I suspect down to technical aspects not working! I reckon we'll see them as part of space legs next year and player owned bases and building. Quite exciting really happy to wait

Better get mining those opals for the 2 billion price tag!

They are prepping for a sudden influx of players what with the codex and onboarding. So some "new" headline feature is to be expected.
Which is why the update hasn't gone so smoothly, it's all hands on deck for the new stuff, qa'ing that for E3 teases and q4 release(?)

That's very optimistic. I hope you're right, but TBH I would not expect anything more than a small update sometime around next November, comparable to this one -- an "extended QOL" update, mostly for new players. There will be no real meaty new stuff until at least Q2 of 2020.

Just as long as carriers actually have some depth and purpose rather, than another excuse for shallow grinding busy work.

eg: "Depth"
  • You can assign your FC to a mining location and utilise it to make a claim so no one else can mine there, store mined commodities, and even turn on features so NPC's use it as a trading post to take you mined commodities away. For surface mining (if/when it's added) the FC will lock on low geostationary position and deploy a lift to the surface to allow SRV to deplay on the surface directly, and drop mined goods there.
  • You can undertake specific tasks such as anti-Xeno gameplay. eg: Holo-me in to fighters deployed from the FC to protect/engage a location as part of the task.

eg: "Or"
  • You grind to add modules and move the FC, and it's basically a mobile docking platform

Going to be interesting to see what FD do with these FCs.

I have the feeling fleet carriers were expanded to the new "base building" that is rumored to come in 2020.
And ice planets could be reworked to make use of the ray-tracing technologies in the new GFX cards and the next gen consoles like the Playstation 5, so they could just be delayed until 2020.

All I am saying is, supercruise assist may be the most un-needed feature in the such a seasoned game to "pull in" new players,
but curiously enough, that there are real life scenarios with the supercruise assist, where commanders just get wrapped up in some other screen, or even got up out of their chairs to get a cup of tea, and do various tasks around their ships...I mean houses.
How could this help further features....wink wink nudge nudge.

Ice Planets and Fleet Carriers
Both Ice Planets and Fleet Carriers are still planned for the development road-map, and we'll be able to share more information with you in the future.

So is "in the future" sooner than "soon" or does "soon" come next ? :)
