In game encyclopaedia

There was a really cool feature in an old Star Trek game I used to play. Can't remember whether it was Star Trek Bridge Commander or Star Trek Academy, but you could basically go to the back of the bridge and view an encyclopaedia through a monitor.

You could review famous Star Trek battles, discoveries, incidents and phenomena within the galaxy. Also famous characters and ships. I'm probably viewing with rose tinted glasses of nostalgia, but I thought some sort of similar feature would be brilliant in elite.

There's already so much data in game related to the galaxy, so places of interest (biggest stars, most mass planets, crazy nebula etc) could be listed for players to visit. If new discoveries are made perhaps they could be uploaded and commanders credited?

I'm thinking a whole load of lore relating to human expansion into the galaxy, wars, generation ships, the empire, the alliance etc could be documented and searchable. When new big events happen through Galnet - aliens found, presidents assassinated, community goals completed, these could also be recorded so they're not just lost over time.

All in all, I think there's loads of interesting info and events and history in elite that is quite difficult to access. Especially for new players. This could be a great way of making the universe of elite more accessible via an in game feature (for all those immersion fans out there). It'll pass the time on those long super cruises. There may even be a clever way to link to missions etc.

Anyway, I would really love to hear what you guys think of this idea and whether you'd find it a useful feature.

Cheers

So, when I have completed a scan at a tourist buoy I don't delete the log entry. I have a long list of info stored in order of completion. I keep any mission updates like this. It may not be pretty but it could be considered a pilot's diary, travel log, war journal...
I haven't got much but its about 40 so + or - entries.

[cool]

Unfortunately they auto delete after a few weeks and as far a s I know you can't get them back, because you've already scanned the beacons. So if you want to read them again you have to visit the beacon

Starfleet Academy and Klingon Academy were great games.

Looking up the best RES sites isn't related to the topic though.

I am aware thanks but my point was perhaps more nuanced than necessary.

The OP is asking for an ingame encyclopedia when the game offers no similar features for many different aspects of the game which imo is quite daft.

I'd like to have an ingame encyclopaedia, I asked for it many times and IIRC even created a thread about it. I don't want it to be a walkthrough where you can find the best RES in the galaxy though. That's why I pointed it out. Stuff like this should stay out of game, information about story, history, manufacturers, tourist sites, some engineer information once you learned about them would be nice though.

Maybe a top 30 systems in terms of bounties earned/cashed could be in there. I suppose in theory that could be easy to calculate?

Yes that's the sort of thing I had in mind. There a whole backstory of human expansion into space, nuclear war on earth, generation ships, birth of the pilots federation, the thargoids, formation of the empire, formation of the alliance etc that is inaccessible in game.

Obsidian ant has some great videos on this stuff, but in my personal and subjective opinion, I think it would be brilliant to have the information available in game.

Babelfisch, didn't realise there had been another thread. Did FD ever drop a comment on this idea?

Hardly a priority if you ask me. It wouldn't hurt but that's not something I'd use very often.

Depth of gameplay is certainly the priority. Just thought this was a cool feature in old Star Trek game that really complimented the game and provided an extra layer of depth/immersion, especially to newbies unfamiliar with the lore.

Given the choice between this and gameplay though, I'd go gameplay every time.

Actually, there is one way they could implement it that I'd *LOVE* : make it readable by HCS Voice Attack voice packs. Now, *this* would be great.
