Instant Gratification Gaming

Terrible, unforgiving designs, a lack of save points and having to fit four of your mates on one keyboard?

(no that wasn't entirely serious before all the neg reppers jump on it)

Well not everything was roses and lollipops during the 80's I'll give you that.

Gamers are a spoilt bunch these days, they seem to want everything instantly, everything seems to work like this now, press A to blow up everything, press X to pick up silly overpowered weapon, press SPACE to collect insane amount of cash, press UP to watch your character climb a building with little to no interaction from you. In a game that is designed to be completed in 1 sitting this is all fine, but I don't think that Elite is supposed to be that game, in fact I really hope Frontier dont listen TOO much to the whiners otherwise Elite is going to lose all the things that make the game what it is.

I dont understand what the big hurry is, and I don't see why people need to know everything right from the start, there is a lot of fun to be had just learning how things work for yourself. 1 post I read recently complaining about how you have to swing around and make another try if you don't slow down in time when exiting supercruise, I mean really, from the time you overshoot to the moment you've come around and are within the correct range to drop out of warp is just a few seconds, if people don't have time to play video games, they should not play video games.

Obviously, its ok to be angry about broken stuff, things that were promised and are simply missing, things that break immersion and tedious things that do not seem to have any reason for being there in the first place. But there is a right way to complain and the annoying way. Some gamers are quite young and they don't know any better, but the very best way to get the attention of the people that actually make the games is to make a constructive post explaining the problem in detail and perhaps even give an idea or 2 as to how this issue might be fixed or tweaked. Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem :p

I'll close with a tip: (spoiler alert if you want to learn how not to overshoot when trying to exit supercruise on your own, haha)
After a few tries I've discovered that going full throttle when in supercruise until the moment the 'ETA' indicator reaches 7 seconds and then slowing down and maintaining 7 seconds without going below 7 works best and you will never overshoot your target again, you can bring it down to 6 or 5 but you start risking an overshoot. It was fun to learn this my way. But if Frontier absolutely have to make any changes to this then maybe they could add an option (not in by default) that turns the timer green or red when you're at the correct speed or going too fast.

Yeah, you're getting some rep. Several of my friends have picked this game up, most of them enjoy it, but two of them don't like it because it's not instant gratification and they complained that there is nothing to tell them what to do even though I was trying to help them all along. Hopefully they try it again.

Adding on to this, in that initial post I don't see him trying to call anyone out or anything so I'm not sure why everyone is jumping on him. Gamers are a divided bunch right now, but as a whole can't we all try to stick together here? The ones who want instant gratification will move onto something else more than likely, and we'll all still be here to play so we might as well get along... (then again, if everything were all peace and sunshine in game, we'd never have to watch out backs!)

Whilst I agree with most of what you say, I disagree with the way that you say it. I think you're being far too ambiguous; labelling ALL gamers with the same point of view "Gamers are a spoilt bunch". Yes I agree that there are gamers who fall into this category, but not ALL do. Not everyone needs the instant gratification that some games bring. My friends and I have gamed together individually since ZX81 and collectively as a group for over 20 years, playing the same game day in and day out.

I understand the point that you're making and like I said, for the most part I agree, however your post might have been better served if it represented the true nature of gaming and that is:

There are Gamers and there are Lamers.

We play Elite Dangerous...... We are gamers.

Nice straw man arguement by the OP
Please point to any posts saying people want instant gratification? No one is wanting to "Press X" to win the game.

Most complaints are around the fact the game is empty and unfinished and simply lacking gameplay. Beyond the basic mechanics there is little going on and this whole "living universe" just seems like a giant con. It's got nothing to do with instant gratification, it's wanting actual gameplay.

One of my fav games of all time is Falcon 4. It's about as complex to learn as any game, certainly much more than ED, yet what made that game truly great was it's dynamic and involving campaign. In that game you really felt you were part of on ongoing war, a small part of large airforce that you participated in and watched it unfold before you. You fly in groups with other planes and other flights are going on around you with specific missions all which outcomes affects the campaign. None of this is in ED. There is no campaign, nothing going on except for scripted events and endless spawning NPC's which if you kill a million of them makes no difference at all to the universe. It all feels sterile, fake and boring.

What a GREAT game... now you've gone and done it... I feel like reinstalling F4. But talk about disparity... Falcon 4, came with what was possibly the best manual ever made for a game... ED's manual?..... well, we'll see.

There is instant gratification, I do a trade run, I make some money, some instant gratification.

In real life I have to wait one month for my wages, not so instant...

Here is my strawman. Here is everybody upset all upset over a reason which I now trivialize. Now all complaints are trivial because you are now grouped with this lazy "gamers" group I've created.

Now, my only question here is, "Do you have cruise control on your car?" If you use it, you are the biggest hypocrite ever.

I guess in retrospect, you are defending the ingame cruise control vs the automatic google car. What would be better is if you were letting your goggle car drive you while you wrote this forum post, then, then you'd have won.

To the OP:

This condescending attitude towards those with a different opinion does not do anyone any favours. But, since you appear to like it, I will defend my views in a similar manner:

<ARSEMODE>
I believe I must be of vastly superior intellect to yourself. I have played this game for roughly the same amount of time as you, and have been able to identify the core game mechanics for what they are - simple, repetetive tasks with no requirements for skill or intellectual thought. I am therefore bored with them, and seek more complicated and rewarding challenges.

You, on the other hand, appear to be satisfied playing make believe with the same 5 tasks (trade, mining, exploring, bountyhunting and piracy) over and over again. I used to enjoy this too, when I was 8.
</ARSEMODE>

Note, I am actually still playing - so I must in reality have some childish side that just enjoys flying around, but please don't assume you are superiour to us who are starting to see the limitations of the current game. We are not seeking "instant gratification", quite the opposite in fact, we are seeking long term challenges, of which there are currently none.

the baby boomers that thought it to be a good idea to remove any form of competative bahaviour and ambition from your life.

...not "you" as in you personally, "you" as in your generation, of course.

Of course it was a good idea: that way you are not competing against them. You just work to pay for their retirement you will not have. ;)

Totally agree with what the OP said but I am SURE there are a lot of things that can be done to help new players get into the game without breaking immersion:

- Always give a reason for docking request denied / do something to improve the chances of getting in
- Some kind of direction indication / arrow / warning when landing facing the wrong way (I did this initially and sat around wondering what was going on - and 3 guys at work did the same)
- A manual! - or even better a "welcome to your new ship" in game intro. People really shouldn't have to read a forum to work out what is going on!

At the moment FD have a lot on their plate - for better or worse depending on what you think about the release timing this is how it is so I think we just have to be patient now.

Unfortunately, it's not a problem limited to games, it's the side effect of lowered mortality and increased life quality. If they needed to fight for food and water or even just for a work, they probably wouldn't be so spoiled. The worst thing is these people eventually will vote (if they don't do already and watching western world politics in the last 10-15 years, they probably do already)

Is there actually any evidence that games are more about instant gratification these days? I'm pretty sure more games were about instant gratification in the 70s/80s. I can't find any online top 10 games lists going back that far, but there must be a more scientific way of proving young people are more/less rubbish than old people in this day and age.

Perhaps there are people who are smarter than you and already have learned everything the game has to offer, and everything they are interested in.
People play games to relax and cope with stressful days at work, sometimes it the only thing that keeps them sane, those people don't always have 6+ hours of game time available.
Lastly, people want to have fun and a steady progression. Would you be happy going to the same day job, 5 days a week without ever reaching that goal of buying a new shiny golden watch (insert whatever you want instead of watch)? If life has progression, why is it lacking in Elite?

the irony is that this game has a whole bunch of instant gratification

500k/invent rares well worth the weight

The assumption that anybody with a different opinion than yours, is a whiny spoiled brat, just because you think that you're the older, or smarter than the others does not make you a better person.
getting tired of seeing these threads for free insults. it's clear that this thread is not about anything but your relation with certain posters on this board, what about pm'ing them what you think about them directly instead of publishing all of your malcontent.
because you know...you are whining about whiners....
View attachment 4986

I agree with the OP.
The problem for me is, that you are whining about whiners whining about winers. and that you critic would be better placed with all the negative posts on the forum. Because those are mostly based in firm mid-air, and are also based on the assumption that their posters are the middle-of-the-univers. I think your citric would be better placed there.

The OP had actually a well balanced, well written opinion in this thread that deserves more of a discussion than many others. and it is clearly visible that he is just stating his opinion.

I don't blame the younger generation for this, it is something outside of their control. The older generations grew up having to have an imagination as the games told us nothing.
-
An example I like to use is the Elder Scrolls games. Compare the difference between Morrowind and Skyrim for "hand holding". Skyrim gives you a big marker telling you where to go, who to talk to, and how to do it. Morrowind gave you a line of text, and left you to figure it out. I preferred Morrowind for this reason, in the same way I prefer the Elite's lack of direction over other online games.
-
No one is wrong for wanting either, but then no developer is wrong for taking either direction, nor should they be pressured to change it.

That's the console effect isn't it? If morrowind was fully voice acted I would still be playing it. It is still on my hard drive though along with skyrim with about 200 mods. I do love them games.
