Instant Gratification Gaming

Maybe we could have in the game "IGG" points much like there is the "USS" points at the moment? hehe :D (I jest of course!)

Gamers are a spoilt bunch these days, they seem to want everything instantly, everything seems to work like this now, press A to blow up everything, press X to pick up silly overpowered weapon, press SPACE to collect insane amount of cash, press UP to watch your character climb a building with little to no interaction from you. In a game that is designed to be completed in 1 sitting this is all fine, but I don't think that Elite is supposed to be that game, in fact I really hope Frontier dont listen TOO much to the whiners otherwise Elite is going to lose all the things that make the game what it is.

I dont understand what the big hurry is, and I don't see why people need to know everything right from the start, there is a lot of fun to be had just learning how things work for yourself. 1 post I read recently complaining about how you have to swing around and make another try if you don't slow down in time when exiting supercruise, I mean really, from the time you overshoot to the moment you've come around and are within the correct range to drop out of warp is just a few seconds, if people don't have time to play video games, they should not play video games.

Obviously, its ok to be angry about broken stuff, things that were promised and are simply missing, things that break immersion and tedious things that do not seem to have any reason for being there in the first place. But there is a right way to complain and the annoying way. Some gamers are quite young and they don't know any better, but the very best way to get the attention of the people that actually make the games is to make a constructive post explaining the problem in detail and perhaps even give an idea or 2 as to how this issue might be fixed or tweaked. Be a part of the solution, not a part of the problem :p

I'll close with a tip: (spoiler alert if you want to learn how not to overshoot when trying to exit supercruise on your own, haha)
After a few tries I've discovered that going full throttle when in supercruise until the moment the 'ETA' indicator reaches 7 seconds and then slowing down and maintaining 7 seconds without going below 7 works best and you will never overshoot your target again, you can bring it down to 6 or 5 but you start risking an overshoot. It was fun to learn this my way. But if Frontier absolutely have to make any changes to this then maybe they could add an option (not in by default) that turns the timer green or red when you're at the correct speed or going too fast.

I agree. Well, with most of it. Saying that if you don't have time to play, then don't play is rather harsh. I have relatively small amount of time to play video games but Elite is one of the first I'm really drawn into for a long time. It's challenging and complex. Maybe not all of the features are implemented yet or work correctly but it's a bloody good game.

Just stick with it and stop whining guys, and you'll figure out most of the things soon enough. I've spend now several hours or so on the gameplay, yet I still learn something new every time.

Playing COD on a wee ones Console I kept thinking yes this looks fantastic but in reality it was boring and like watching the same movie clip over and over. To me it was like the developers were scared that no one would die from the word go and you either would get killed or kill every thirty seconds. I think back to the epic hour long battle rounds on BF2 Capture the flag or capture the map and the fact I could take 10 minutes just to get in place to snipe at one of the air fields. The maps were big and you had room for actual tactics. In the end I was thinking Wow look at that score I killed twenty two fish in a barrel….In saying that it could be disrespectful to COD as I’ve never really played it but that what I thought.

I think that is why I like the idea of DayZ that it seems to be ruthless and unforgiving and so large. You are not forced down one of three corridors over and over and takes a bit of skill to learn how to survive. I view Elite the same I wanted it to be as hard and forgiving as they dared.

My issue with the "instant gratification is bad" mentality is this: This is a video game.

I have to work very hard in real life to get anywhere. I work hard at my job. I volunteer in my community. I spend lots of time with my family. Life is work. At the end of a long day, I want to sit back and relax. I want to crack open a cold one and have fun. Not work. I don't play video games to have a third job.

Do I expect everything to be handed to me on a silver platter? No. I am willing to earn things. Do I want to spend months performing repetitive tasks for small gains? No. It's all about balance. I think Elite is finding a balance, which is expected.

TL: DR - Walk in their shoes before you start bashing the play style of others.

The whole supercruise thing reminds me of Frontier, when coming into the Achenar system - the station is "miles" away; can't remember the exact amount. I developed a system of locking on to the station and then disengaging the autopilot, holding down the thrust button and full time compression so the time passed more quickly; on standard autopilot, it took forever. Then as the station comes in range, engage the autopilot et voila! Or at least sometimes et voila. Other times, it would miss and then go all the way out again ha ha! Is that what supercruise is like in this game?

CoD used to be a great franchise, back in the WW2 days. Then two things happened: it went all modern warfare, and got obsessed with online play. The campaign became an afterthought instead of the focus and now gameplay boils down to leaping around like a lunatic (good luck with 100lbs of equipment on your back in real life), nonsense like 'quickscoping' (do that in real life and you'll just keep bashing the scope against your eye) and worst of all, it all takes place in the same (small) selection of maps. Boring. The first two CoD games had wonderfully scripted set pieces in a conflict that meant something. Now half the time, you're shooting enemies simply because they come from THE MIDDLE EAST...
