Hardware & Technical Intel Broadwell fanless

According to Intel, the new range in 14 nanometers, uses much less energy than products currently sold and does not require a fan to regulate temperature. Commercialized for the end of the year. Below is an antique ?

You still need air movement for the bits on the motherboard that get hot, quite a few of them rely on there being a fan on the CPU cooler.

We won't be getting rid of fans entirely for a long time yet.

Was reading some stuff earlier about this: mobile stuff only at the moment I think.

It'll be interesting to see how it all scales for desktop chips though.

Separately, it looks as though Nvidia will be officially announcing their second-generation Maxwell based cards (GTX 870/880) very soon. Could be pretty decent and power efficient beasts at a reasonable price too.

They're making 3 variants, Y, U & H.

Y is super low power and fanless, things like tablets will use these.

U is medium power and will require a very small fan, laptops will use these.

H is enthusiast grade and will require normal desktop cooling, gaming laptops & desktops will use these.

U & Y are expected before the end of 2014, H might not be till mid 2015. Also H is expected to use SKT1150 and any Z97 or higher board should have support.
