Interesting observation about the player base

I play at work too.

I'm seeing increased activity around Deciat. However, these forums seem like a ghost town today.

Probably because there has been nothing of note happening in the game that can be discussed.
  • Galnet - suspended - no news of what is going on the galaxy
  • PowerPlay - doing it's own 5th column thing - people moan - people dont care (enough to force any changes)
  • Fleet carriers - coming soon - Fronter will tell us something soon but wont tell us when
  • Guardians - seems to have stopped - no new locations or activities to more their story forward recently
  • Thargoid star map - nice visuals when activated but seems to be an end point rather than a step in their story.
  • Gankers - no change since last year - Frontier do stuff, they don't tell us what, people complain that it isn't enough
  • Space legs - not coming soon - may or may not be part of the December 2020 update
  • Base building - not coming soon - may or may not be part of the December 202 update
  • Mining nerf - prices now fluctuate much more than before - Not something that is game breaking, just annoying
  • SLF pilot rebuy - a long awaited feature - now there

People could talk about the 70,000 Fuel rescues - but that is a player led initiative to cover an in-game design hole.
People could talk about the 109 Thargoid attacked stations that have been rebuilt by project - IDA but that is a player led initiative - there still doesn't seem a focus or direction of the Thargoid attacks so it seems to be completely RNG as to where they attack next.

Without something coming from Frontier, there is very little to discuss...

meanwhile we sit and wait...

Due to the current situation, Steam reports online player records. In the meantime (judging from Steamcharts) player activity in Elite didn't increase.

I guess that means Elite players already rarely left their homes before Covid19.

I observe those figures since several weeks, the current Situation stopped decreasing the number of Players.

That's a curious line item. Do you refer to how instancing has only gotten worse since the last update? Its getting harder to gank Gankers due to this glaring bug.
I dont gank, but people who do and get reported may or may not be investigated by Frontier.
The biggest deterrent to being ganked is the ability to block the commander. It'll mean that you wont instance together in open.
It might be blocking that is causing your belief that it is getting harder to Gank.

Reports off of the back of DW2 (anecdotal evidence) was that those trying to gank DW2 commanders were seeing fewer and fewer DW2 commanders because a list was going round of ganking pilots and if you saw these pilots, you were to block them.
I can't tell you how successful it is / was but it appeared to do what it was intended to do.

That's a good point. Maybe outlaws add lawfuls to their block list so they can seal club without interference? The instance issue I observe is the inability to instance with my own wing. We're all on eachother's FL and floating around in SC, I see wing signals instead of their ships. I drop to normal space and jump back to SC and that might resolve it, maybe not.

You realise ganking isnt against the rules right? If youre reporting gankers id suggest you stop wasting Fdevs time ;)

How is that a design hole? You mean because there is no NPC rescue feature?

I'd call that a design decision, not a hole. And its thanks to that decision/hole (delete as appropriate) that fuel rats exist.

The "hole" has led to something great in game. Perhaps we need more "holes" like this.

Interestingly, NPC rescue IS a feature in the game. It is not very common, but if you are low on fuel there is a chance that a NPC rescue ship will appear and refuel you. I'm not sure about the exact conditions and it's possible this is limited to (around) inhabited space but it has happened in the past.
