Interface Design Sneak Peaks

Has anyone seen promotional images/gameplay that shows some sort of prospect for the general interface design? For me it can really make or break the game (hence why I prefer RCT2 over 3). I assume they will have mainly menu systems like the previous games but Im wondering how they will look and function.

I personally like the pop up window style of the early Coaster Tycoon games that organized all the games number information into separate windows. I like looking at all the numbers and stats, but I know that some people dont like to play that way. I think the ideal UI would not only function smoothly but be customizable for different playstyles. Considering almost all your interaction with the game is through UI, its pretty much essential that it looks good and functions well. And being able to change the way it functions to what you please would be awesome.

Seconded with the multiple windows and quick access to information. Many times when I'm not focusing on the look and feel of the game, I like to see how the park is doing, and like to have a few windows open to keep track of it all and sit back.

I also demand that we can use keyboard much to control game, mostly gui and such. RCT1+2 was good and then RCT3 did not have so much which bugged me.

I like moveable windows.

Anything that isn't white; I can't stand that trend in games today, especially from EA. Does every UI have to be plain white or grey? Throw some color into it, like some blue, orange, purple, whatever. It doesn't have to be eye-straining, just unique and memorable.

I'm also a sucker for modern looks, my web developer side, but I know that most people aren't, so... just don't make it ugly. [squeeeeee]

Totally agree, it makes it a lot easier and using key board shortcuts has a nice sort of "manager" feel to it that makes me feel cool when I do it. Its dumb but its a good touch and at very least saves us time.

Agreed. I will always have that weird reddish color of the RCT 1 and 2's menus ingrained in my mind. Switch it up people!

I'd be curious to know what peoples 'ideal' UI would be. :)

Something simple, sleek, and modern. This is a UI someone created for Cities: Skylines. I'd like something like this.

I really like that as well. I was thinking it could be a little more "fun"... but I think you sacrifice the some of the sleekness of it in that case. Its mostly the white and grey thing, it looks good but is also a tad bland... but overall pretty awesome. [up]

Its going to be impossible to content everyone (some people like colorful, others sleek and clean), but something I would really appreaciate (that BTW, Cities Skylines does wrong, and RCT3 not particulary well), is that scenery and rides windows are easy to navigate to find nearly all content without having to scroll down or left 2 minutes to find what we want, as its will come even worse when custom content and expansions start to appear. Maybe even a search function in this windows to locate fast anything you want.

Oh yes please, this absolutely must be my number 1 frustration in rct3, the non-ability to quickly find things (back) in those menus/lists.
"Oh man, which category/pack was that one wooden pole in again?" [blah]
My mouse-arm spontaneously starts hurting again remembering that. [haha]

On top of that: Some kind of favourites list for quick acces.
Either manually added to the list by the player itself and/or auto-added if object is used many times.

I like the idea of a search function... and I agree having a windowed list of, say, all the guests can be really annoying if you have to scroll all the way down through all of them to find someone.

I see a favorites list turning more into a "theme list".. lets say your building youre park all in one theme. And you want all those themed items all together in a menu, even if they are technically different (decorations vs. benches, etc.). But I think a quick access favorite list could be super handy as well. If your making your park all have the same pathway, why have to dig though menus to pull it up all the time?
A similar function to this would be a "last used" type thing so if you are placing a path, then get distracted and get back to it, selecting that same path would be way faster.

I started to work on my "ideal UI". This is my "WIP" [happy]
Wow, that looks really good! That is some serious dedication. I like how all the icons have labels on them so you dont forget what the pictures mean. But I would actually make them a little larger so you can read the text and see the picture better. Also, it might be nice to have park rating up in the top right "HUD" next to money and stuff.
